Maribor(Slovenia) away 10/7/2026

The closest airport to Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport (MBX) is located just 9 km (about 6 miles) south of the city and Maribor's football stadium. However, because it handles mostly charter and cargo flights, international travelers usually use Graz Airport (GRZ) in Austria, which is 60 km away. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Hopefully this gets the ball rolling for anybody fancying a trip out there.

Ljubljana is around 150km away and has plenty of flights from London, takes around 2.5 hours.
There are trains to Maribor and take between 2 to 2.5 hours from Ljubljana.

Wouldn't Graz be a better option?

Just had a look, the majority of flights involve a change, fare wise it's very similar.

Maribor and Greenwich are twin towns so maybe trips to Reinickendorf, Germany and Tema, Ghana, Greenwich's other twin towns, coming up?

    No, probably not.

Anyone got any good suggestions on which route to take?

Been looking and zagreb looks a good way but 2hr bus ride the other end.

Surely there has to be a simple way to get there

Cheapest is Zagreb and a coach, the flight from Stansted is £50 return and the coach about £15.

Fastest is a flight direct but gets you there a whole week early or 2 hours late.

Best compromise is Graz and a train

Wonder if it’s possible to charter a coach trip via a flight somewhere.. genuinely tempted by this and go along with a group of everyone rather than a solo trip

    2. Drinks in Paris and walk (20 mins) to Gare de l'Est (20 mins)
    3. 15:55 Paris Gare de l'Est, arriving Stuttgart Hbf 19:04.
    4. Drinks in Stuttgart
    5. 20:29 Stuttgart to Slovenia by sleeper train, arriving Ljubljana 07:50.
    Friday 10 July
    1. Bus to Maribor (1hr 30min to 1hr 45min)
This is what the Sleeper train from Stuttgart to Slovenia looks like - https://youtu.be/hvwCZn2EvmI?si=Q492cR89Wju4gxuy

(Of course, if Germany win their group and progress to the QFs, it might be interesting to stay in Stuttgart on 9 July)

  • Me and the old man have booked flights to Ljubljana for the Friday - renting a car, driving to Maribor - parking at the hotel, day on the beers and staying in Maribor after the match. Saturday, driving back to Ljubljana - giving the car back and hopefully watching England in the 1/4 final there, then flying home Sunday 💪🏼

We have booked Klagenfurt flights on the 6th. 1 hour drive through the Alps. 3 nights in Kransjka. Day out to Bled. Drive to Maribor. 2 nights in Maribor. Then drive back to Austria. Should be a good one.

    To anyone going:

The museum would really appreciate any programmes, teamsheets, badges, scarves etc.

    Happy to pay costs

However the game is on 31 July and if (as expected) Spain go a long way at the world cup, then hardly any of their main players will be there.

Last summer FIFA and the players union agreed on a mandatory 21 day rest period, so any Barcelona player that reaches at least the quarter finals surely won't be playing at Birmingham.

A lot of Birmingham fans are already moaning at the ticket prices (35 quid) for a friendly that is basically going to be Barca's B team.

I’m on the same flight but getting the Flexbus to Maribor (works out about 30 euro return (Saturday)) otherwise I would have loved to have shared a cab. (I still may)

We are going to do the flex bus as well, it was just if there were enough numbers we could explore the option of a cab. Let’s see how it pans out. 😎
  • Via Amsterdam to Ljubljana on the Thursday. Stay at the intercontinental which is a 10 minute walk to the railway station. Plenty of trains to Maribor and back including Friday evening.
