What a cracking game that was.Hope Cape Verde do Saudi Arabia in next match.2
-
Well done Cape Verde. Taking points off Spain and Uruguay. Story of the tournament.
Uruguay in trouble now - they need something off Spain to get through.3 -
So suddenly Cabo Verde might be finishing second in this group, all they have to do is match whatever Uruguay do against Spain.1
-
Loved Cape Verdes positivity0
-
Brilliant game seeing Bielsa and Suarez upset not too bad either4
-
Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia potentially for 2nd in the group. Spain can't afford to take it easy against Uruguay, and risk losing and finishing second.0
-
They've won both their games, including beating a good side that won their own opening game, but Mexico are more pony than a side who haven't had a shot on target in their last 120 minutes of football, only two off target, and won their first game 1-0 with a goal that was deflected twice, against a team ranked 83rd in the world?AddicksAddict said:

Just landed in Dallas (not to watch the World Cup unfortunately). It’s absolutely heaving with Argentina fans but they aren’t in any of the pubs for some reason. Turns out the Argentina team are staying in the same hotel as me so tonight I’ll be sleeping in the same building as Lionel Messi!5

Just to be clear, Mexico would batter Scotland, especially in the bloody Azteca. And I say that as a Scotland fan (my family have never owned most of a Scottish city though).3

There have been a few comments about my comment on the personable nature of Emma Hayes, alongside this one.EugenesAxe said:
What are yours? seeing as you're here to reply unlike her...SporadicAddick said:Does Emma Hayes have any personable redeeming features?
It's comments like that that make SM the toxic pit that it is, wouldn't it be better to not contribute to that?
Emma Hayes is a direct talker, and is combative by nature. It's a personality trait that has resulted in personal and professional success. I don't find it a personable trait. I'd suggest that, as a criticism, it's at the lower end of the toxicity of social media, if it's on the scale at all. I doubt if I said it to her face she'd give two fucks. My comment wasn't derogatory about any protected characteristic, nor her ability as a coach or TV analyst, both of which she clearly does to a high standard.
Apologies to anyone offended by that remark, or who thinks it was out of order. In response to the question asked by a few, people that know me would probably say that I am - people that only know me from comments on a football forum probably think I'm a twat.

Our family has its own tartan and still owns a fair chunk of the Highlands, but Scotland beating Mexico at the Azteca is as likely as me winning the 100m at the Olympics in 2028.AddicksAddict said:

No shit things have changed, they will change after every game. There are some groups where the team currently bottom can still go through.Callumcafc said:

Not quite sure what the point is of doing an 'as it stands' last 32 when some teams have only played one game.3 -

Not quite sure what the point is of doing an 'as it stands' last 32 when some teams have only played one game.No shit “no shit”.It’s not an “as it stands” otherwise I’d have England playing Portugal who are third in Group K. It’s a simulation-based projection based on the results of the remaining group fixtures e.g. England win about ~80% of the time (8000/10000 simulations) against Ghana.
I could take the fixtures one by one and give you a percentage breakdown for each (eg England v DR Congo 25%, England v Uzbekistan 20%…) if you really wanted but I thought better of that because people like to take the piss.4 -

Mexico have lost twice in 85 plus games in the Azteca. So Bob, I won’t start training just yet.bobmunro said:

Why is everyone, including on TV, now referring to them as Côte d’Ivoire rather than Ivory Coast, and yet at the same time in the same match, still saying Germany?Sword65pf said:CIV have some good players, enjoying watching them.0 -
Because they requested probably about 15 years ago to be referred to by that name.1

Best answer I’ve seen to this question that seems to bother so many people for some reason is this one from @rina on the “General things that annoy you” thread:
Although Côte d’Ivoire translates directly as Ivory Coast, (well, strictly it’s ‘Coast of Ivory’, but you know what I mean!) the official “English” name is still Côte d’Ivoire.rina said:
Côte d'Ivoire, Czechia and Germany are all correct as these are the short form names in English of those countries as recognised by the UN, it's not a new obsession, it's just correct use of language. Full list of long and short form names can be found here https://unterm.un.org/unterm2/en/countrybuckshee said:The new obsession with calling countries in the World Cup by the names they use themselves like Core D’Ivoire or Czechia yet still saying Germany.
The reason for this is another discussion I guess, but that’s what it is.
[It’s also not as simple as just directly translating a country’s name into English, as then, (to use the example that keeps being used to complain about this), we’d call Germany “Germanland” as that’s how Deutschland translates.]0 -

Might be in the minority, but it’s interesting to see what the next round of games might be, even if it’s going to change.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

Austria, which in German is Österreich, would be Eastern Empire. Japan, being Nippon, is The sun's origin, and China, 中国 (Simplified) or 中國 (Traditional) pronounced Zhōngguó, is Middle Kingdom.lordromford said:jimmymelrose said:

Now, what would France translate as?1 -
The number of draws happening between third and fourth seeds in various groups I think 3 points and a goal difference that isn't ridiculous will probably be enough to go through. We could even end up seeing someone going through with 2. Yet another reason to hate this format, although it's still better than the original idea of 16 groups of 3.
Scotland must surely be in contention for a record here - fewest shots on target by a team qualifying from their group.0
