As it stands, the likely round of 32:

    1 Germany v Paraguay
    2 France v Sweden
    3 South Korea v Switzerland
    4 Morocco v Netherlands

    5 Croatia v Portugal
    6 Spain v Austria
    7 USA v Bosnia
    8 Belgium v Czechia

    9 Brazil v Japan
    10 Ivory Coast v Norway
    11 Mexico v Scotland
    12 England v DR Congo

    13 Argentina v Uruguay
    14 Australia v Egypt
    15 Canada v Algeria
    16 Colombia v Ghana
After today’s results (notably dropped points for Belgium and Uruguay, extra points for Iran and Cape Verde) the following ties have changed:

    8) Belgium v Czechia => Egypt v Czechia OR Uruguay
    13) Argentina v Uruguay => Argentina v Cape Verde OR Saudi Arabia
    14) Australia v Egypt => Australia v Belgium
    15) Canada v Algeria => Canada v Iran OR Egypt

As much as I enjoy some of the so called big teams not winning it does have consequences. Like Argentina having a far too easy 1st round match, England potentially having to play Portugal in the 1st round.

It has always been the case in tournaments where a 3rd place team can advance that the knockout round is unbalanced. Some group winners facing 3rd place teams and some meeting runner ups.

The knockout rounds should be drawn based on seedings not pre-determined.

    Keep up the predictions Callumfc.

I haven't seen every game far from it but fortunately I stayed up after the Iran game (which TBF wasn't bad, Iran getting a point. ) to watch Cape Verde v Uruguay which has been the best game I've seen so far this tournament. Great to see Suarez looking miserable at the end.

Is suarez having a bite to eat while he watches
If I was sitting in front of him, I would be worried. Maybe that's why he was kept behind glass. 🐰

CIV have some good players, enjoying watching them.
Why is everyone, including on TV, now referring to them as Côte d’Ivoire rather than Ivory Coast, and yet at the same time in the same match, still saying Germany?

Best answer I’ve seen to this question that seems to bother so many people for some reason is this one from @rina on the “General things that annoy you” thread:

The new obsession with calling countries in the World Cup by the names they use themselves like Core D’Ivoire or Czechia yet still saying Germany.
Côte d'Ivoire, Czechia and Germany are all correct as these are the short form names in English of those countries as recognised by the UN, it's not a new obsession, it's just correct use of language. Full list of long and short form names can be found here https://unterm.un.org/unterm2/en/country
Although Côte d’Ivoire translates directly as Ivory Coast, (well, strictly it’s ‘Coast of Ivory’, but you know what I mean!) the official “English” name is still Côte d’Ivoire.

The reason for this is another discussion I guess, but that’s what it is.
[It’s also not as simple as just directly translating a country’s name into English, as then, (to use the example that keeps being used to complain about this), we’d call Germany “Germanland” as that’s how Deutschland translates.]
Austria, which in German is Österreich, would be Eastern Empire.  Japan, being Nippon, is The sun's origin, and China, 中国 (Simplified) or 中國 (Traditional) pronounced Zhōngguó, is Middle Kingdom.

Now, what would France translate as?
    “Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys”
    🇫🇷😉

Well looks like we might as well pack it in, we're done for now:

No way do we have a chance if an actual witch doctor is cursing us.

Costa Rica is not at this world cup. Must be a different team: I'm curious to know what match it was.

Of course, forgot about that one. I don't think I watched it.

No problem. Ms AA’s Irish grandmother has put on a counter curse. It’s more effective, seeing as it’s from beyond the grave.

I thought it was one in today’s game. Years ago, not the case. It seems any contact and it’s a foul.

If Austria win tonight, them the Argies cant win the Group and wont go into England's half of the draw, provided we win our Group

I thought they both took the man and then got the ball so I was baffled that it took so long to give it.

    Shocking pen.

Fuck of Danny Murphy. Heard it all now, said that Messi might have deliberately missed the pen so he could score the record breaking goal from open play. Is he having a competition with Lee Dixon on who can talk the most shit?

England fact, we havent lost to Argentina in 28 years. Yes I am using millwall style math for that but it's true.
