I couldn’t handle losing to this Argentina side. De Paul, Martinez, Romero, Lautaro Martinez…such an unlikeable group of players.

As it stands, the likely round of 32:

    Germany v Paraguay
    France v Sweden
    South Korea v Switzerland
    Morocco v Netherlands

    Croatia v Portugal
    Spain v Austria
    USA v Bosnia
    Belgium v Czechia

    Brazil v Japan
    Ivory Coast v Norway
    Mexico v Scotland
    England v DR Congo

    Argentina v Uruguay
    Australia v Egypt
    Canada v Algeria
    Colombia v Ghana
    Likely winners:
    Germany
    France
    Switzerland
    Netherlands
    Croatia
    Spain
    USA
    Belgium
    Japan
    Norway
    Scotland
    England
    Argentina
    Egypt
    Canada
    Ghana
Scotland likely winners vs Mexico at the Azteca? You from north of the border?
Our family has its own tartan and we used to own most of what is now Edinburgh so, historically, yes, but mainly I think Mexico are even more pony than Scotland.
Our family has its own tartan and still owns a fair chunk of the Highlands, but Scotland beating Mexico at the Azteca is as likely as me winning the 100m at the Olympics in 2028.
My family still own all of Skye, own a newsagent in Loch Lomond, a car wash in Elgin, and I'm definitely in the running to medal in the 100m

At least he's not chewing gum. What an awful sight that is.
    Never nice seeing Frank masticating.

An Argentina team with unlikeable players is pretty much par for the course.

I haven't seen every game far from it but fortunately I stayed up after the Iran game (which TBF wasn't bad, Iran getting a point. ) to watch Cape Verde v Uruguay which has been the best game I've seen so far this tournament. Great to see Suarez looking miserable at the end.
His old woman was not too concerned, tapping away on her blower

Argentina have an absolutely awful group in fairness. I’d expect any of the top 6/7 teams in the world to breeze through that without conceding.

The real test will come when they play a side that can actually put them under a bit of pressure.

Tonight's record-breaking Messi goals have triggered memories of the legendary Just Fontaine.

Fontaine hit 13 goals for France in one World Cup ... in 1958 ... one of which came against Scotland and our own John Hewie.

    https://youtu.be/ehDbn0iIKMk?si=9I9XXgeyWP292n6l

Famously Hewie (wearing No. 5 in the white shirts) missed a penalty in the 1-2 loss to the French.  You can relive a real Charlton moment at around 14 seconds.

The only good thing about Messi doing this (who I dislike), is knowing how Ronaldo will be feeling (who I also dislike).

Fuck of Danny Murphy. Heard it all now, said that Messi might have deliberately missed the pen so he could score the record breaking goal from open play. Is he having a competition with Lee Dixon on who can talk the most shit?
Danny Murphy commentating on Argentina vs Austria live on BBC….

    ‘It’s never a penalty’

    ‘It’s a penalty yes’

Messi misses… ‘justice as it wasn’t a penalty’

How this absolute pinecone continues to get work as a commentator is beyond me. He's intensely dislikable, got a voice like a dripping tap and has less valuable insight than Lee fucking Dixon.

Good luck, the projected draw has really opened up for them thanks to Belgium and Uruguay’s dodgy results… they won’t play a decent team until Colombia or Portugal in a quarter final.

    Algeria, Austria, Jordan -> Cape Verde -> Egypt -> Colombia -> England/Brazil/Mexico -> France/Spain

It's a superstition in Argentina if you walk past a redhead on the street, it's bad luck but to counteract it if you're a man, touch your left testicle.  If you're a woman, your left breast.

Could see Mbappe catching Messi up by a couple of goals again tonight - if France play anywhere near how they did in the second half v Senegal, they are going to batter Iraq.

I find Messi even more irritating than Ronaldo, so I'd quite like to see them meet in the quarters and Ronnie to have the last laugh and dump them out.

Always find the gulf in quality mad in the World Cup.

Mbappe and Olise leading the line for France whilst you have a League One player up top for Iraq.

As it stands, the likely round of 32:

    1 Germany v Paraguay
    2 France v Sweden
    3 South Korea v Switzerland
    4 Morocco v Netherlands

    5 Croatia v Portugal
    6 Spain v Austria
    7 USA v Bosnia
    8 Belgium v Czechia

    9 Brazil v Japan
    10 Ivory Coast v Norway
    11 Mexico v Scotland
    12 England v DR Congo

    13 Argentina v Uruguay
    14 Australia v Egypt
    15 Canada v Algeria
    16 Colombia v Ghana
After today’s results (notably dropped points for Belgium and Uruguay, extra points for Iran and Cape Verde) the following ties have changed:

    8) Belgium v Czechia => Egypt v Czechia OR Uruguay
    13) Argentina v Uruguay => Argentina v Cape Verde OR Saudi Arabia
    14) Australia v Egypt => Australia v Belgium
    15) Canada v Algeria => Canada v Iran OR Egypt
No shit things have changed, they will change after every game. There are some groups where the team currently bottom can still go through.

Not quite sure what the point is of doing an 'as it stands' last 32 when some teams have only played one game.
    No shit “no shit”.

It’s not an “as it stands” otherwise I’d have England playing Portugal who are third in Group K. It’s a simulation-based projection based on the results of the remaining group fixtures e.g. England win about ~80% of the time (8000/10000 simulations) against Ghana.

I could take the fixtures one by one and give you a percentage breakdown for each (eg England v DR Congo 25%, England v Uzbekistan 20%…) if you really wanted but I thought better of that because people like to take the piss.
This is how i imagine AI of the near future, providing decent projection based insights, with a good dose of attitude :)

The most protected footballer in the history of the sport, and a bully on the pitch too. Lots of film of him pushing players in the back clipping heels etc off the ball and getting away with it, but the second anything happens to him it's always a fouls and he's crying for a card for the opponent.

Also won at least 1 maybe 2, Ballon D'Ors when he wasn't the best player in the world at the time

Minus the Ballon D’Ors that’s all stuff that players like Doc and Dobson get praised for!

Odds on them still having the hydration break second half despite the fact it's pissing with rain?
