Well worth giving him a year contract. Still showed flashes of what he's capable of in the very limited game time he got last season and if fit, should chip in with a few goals. Plus, you know he'll put his heart and soul into every appearance he'll get.

Not overly bothered by it, we still need a new striker of higher quality than we already have
This is completely missing the point. We will sign another striker and that was never in doubt. What re signing Godden does is give us a fantastic poacher that due to his age will be used sparingly and from the bench. Not many better finishers in The Championship. True he’s not going to be available every week but I think there’s hardly a better player we could have signed for what Jones will expect from him.
This this this. Godden isn't going to start every week but 20-25 mins to go and we need a goal I don't think there's many better suited at this level to that role.

We'll still go out and replace Dykes anyway with probably a younger version.

All good. I would have been more surprised if he didn’t sign.

I suspect it means we play hardball over any negotiation with Dykes assuming we are also signing someone new.
I assume it was one or the other with him and Godden, just in case Godden decided he wanted to drop a division to play more.

Godden is a great finisher, don't get it twisted but to say they're aren't many better in the division is probably hyperbolic even at the height of his ability

A sensible decision, despite his age a fit Matty Godden is an asset to the team.

I get your logic but I’d be surprised they said to Dykes we’re only interested if Godden doesn’t sign. That’s why I said they can now be a bit harder on any negotiation if Dykes does yes to whatever offer was on the table.

Sniffer dog signs, great news as he is a finisher who if stays fit will get 10 plus goals.

He just said he won’t play the first pre-season game, so he should get a nearly complete pre-season in

We can’t afford to be overly sentimental with our decisions, but this one I can’t help but be so, pleased we’ve kept him on the least he deserves and he won’t take it for granted. Hopefully he gets fit again soon, I also didn’t realise he got a break in that game he carried on in.

Delighted we have him for next Season. Without getting into all the analysis, he is Charlton, he will get us goals and we are better with him than without him.

Love the bloke, hope he retires here
  • I'm guessing he must be be buoyed by Messi's performances.  There's life in the old dog yet!

agree - if/when fit, he makes every matchday squad

I can't really see any down size to this.  Best natural scorer at the club, likely relatively cheap and with you allowed to bring on 5 subs now then having plenty of attacking options on the bench as possible is a good thing.
The key to me is now bringing in a very good striker who is first name on the team sheet and not re-signing the donkey, Dykes.

Honestly I hope he doesn't - not because I don't rate Godden but because it means we've got a squad good enough that he isn’t an automatic pick. We're a way off that currently and I'm sure he'll have a big part to play next season but ideally a 35 year old coming back from an injury season wouldn't be the ace card to play (or at least not the ONLY ace card.)

Whether he plays all the time and keeps his place or is a substitute most weeks, the guy will score goals so either way its a win/win. Class is permanent
  • Really pleased we have resigned him.

And good the club has repaid his loyalty, playing as he did in our promotion year when he was far from fit.

One question. Apparently he won't be fit for the start of the season. When is he expected back?

If he can get decent fitness back this is great news because he is a good player.

Having him around for another year guiding our younger strikers can only be a good thing.

Bit harsh on dykes, who I put as a key part of our survival, when he signed we were in free fall. Gave us a focal point up front and showed the others that if you put yourself about a bit you’ll give championship defenders trouble.

Short Interview with Rich Cawley on his substack this morning.

Talks about fixtures, bookies odds etc. Mentions Millwall being a fixture to look out for, which prompted Rich to write:
Millwall did the double over Charlton in the league last season. That included a heavy 4-0 loss at The Den in January 2026.”

Come on now Rich, the draw at home may have felt like a defeat at the time, but that doesn’t mean it was one!

A bit of ‘gentle’ digging needed Rich.
