Doing a Panenka, by the man himself
This is a great article. I have met the guy, but I was far too star-struck to ask him about the most famous penalty. In truth I could barely remember the year it happened still less that he inflicted it on the Germans🙏. Some fascinating insights into that!
Looking at it again I now understand the bit that at the time completely fooled Maier. Panenka takes a really long run-up so Maier expected him to blast it. None of today's stuttering nonsense (Harry, n.b.). The link to the UEFA site with some clips from other later copies (successful ones only) also has a rare second view of the original from behind Panenka, where you see more clearly the last moment brake as Maier is already flying to his left to stop the expected thunderbolt. Really, a thing of beauty.
Lovely bloke, very much at home in the ordinary pubs you find in that area. He was seriously ill during the pandemic, and the nation was holding its breath but he has pulled through.
I really think someone should compile a YouTube "doing a Panenka and ****** it up" Maybe someone has?

I don't remember the Panenka spot kick. Probably a couple of years early to cross my radar. Looking at it though, it seems pretty decent. I can only imagine though how different it was from what preceded it.
I really do despise the current trend of penalty taking that you so accurately describe as 'stuttering nonsense'.0
