Carlos Quieroz has a damned good record at the World Cup as well, from managing Portugal, Iran and Ghana he's only lost by more than one goal on two occasions in the five World Cup's he's managed at... Although ironically one of those games was the 6-2 win over Iran in '22fenaddick said:
I’ve already mentioned it but I don’t think a team will be able to execute it for a full 120 minutes. It might be a frustrating watch but we’d get chances in the last 10 (as we did last night) and in extra time tooChris_from_Sidcup said:
How do you think one of the third placed sides (if we win the group) will set up against us then?fenaddick said:Have to remember that knockout games won’t be like this. It won’t be a low block for 120 minutes+2 -

Think we need snicko on that..3 -
FFS.
Like most people, I really wanted Ezri Konsa to do well and was hoping that his iffy performance against Croatia was just part of a wider problem at the back. Then, to my surprise, Ghana bring on a player that I actually know quite well. Prince Adu plays for Viktoria Plzen (but even for them, usually off the bench). At first I think, nah, we can take care of him.
Then he's immediately outpaced our back line, and Pickford comes careering out, looks like he's wiped him out, but fortunately the officials called it right.
Did we learn? Did we ****. It didn't look like it at the time but he breaks through again and Konsa- Konsa!!- completely wipes him out. That, as we only saw afterwards, was a stonewall pen. For me, the ultimate, inevitable personal connection nightmare, because that's what football serves up to us proper supporters. Heartbreak. Punishment for having tribal allegiances
But, inexplicably we got away with it. You've got to laugh with Queiroz “Once again, VAR went for a coffee. It’s natural, I would like to also take my coffees once in a while, but it was a clear penalty, red card,”
For us tribal fans, it's always the other lot that get away with one, right? Maybe, just maybe, this is a sign that this time it's different.😉4 -
Didn't see any post-match analysis but what was the general opinion on English tv of the Konsa non-penalty?
Personally i was surprised so little was made of it at the time. He's dived in with both feet off the ground, got nowhere near the ball and made contact with the striker. How on earth is it not a pen?
I'd be absolutely fuming if that's at the other end on Kane.8 -
I watched the Tifo livestream after the match and they were saying that they had comments from various different nations saying their commentators didn't mention it either. I can't work out why, it was a stonewall penaltyChris_from_Sidcup said:Didn't see any post-match analysis but what was the general opinion on English tv of the Konsa non-penalty?

My niece was married to a Ghanaian, unfortunately they divorced, lovely bloke mind who helped out more the once when family had it's 'problems'.....good food whenever we went to one of their family do's.Karim_myBagheri said:My old neighbours were Ghanaian. Lived next to them for 2 years. Used to feed me as I was very broke with some of the best food I've ever had. Every weekend during the summer I would sit in their garden with them for drinks and barbecue. We first properly got on after they heard me next door being so pissed off with Suarez against Ghana during that world cup.3 -
I thought Konsa & Pickford were both extremely lucky tbh.
But nothing surprised me last night, went exactly as I thought it would unfortunately having watched England for over 45yrs.
Bring on Panama…….its the hope 🏴3 -
There used to be an incredible Ghanaian kitchen in the Castle Tavern in Woolwich called Amma's Fare whose spiced whole tilapia I would just constantly order for takeaway when I lived near there. Wait, apparently it's still open! Yeah, that stuff is fantastic. There's also Maame's who do fantastic popups here and there, they used to be at the Green Goddess quite a lot, they're doing the Horniman this weekend, I'll be playing cricket but their stuff is completely worth trying

Pickford can be a real liability sometimes

The only thing maybe the challenge to get the ball in their half. Then it was given as offside. 🤷🏻♂️Chris_from_Sidcup said:Didn't see any post-match analysis but what was the general opinion on English tv of the Konsa non-penalty?

Poor performance but by no means a disaster. Ultimately it is probably better to be good against good opposition as they will be the games that define our world cup. Beat Panama and it is all forgotten.4

Wasn't the offside given after the shot hit Semenyo, as he was beyond Pickford at that point?guinnessaddick said:

Doesn't matter if he's beyond Pickford, he was offside because only one defender between him and the goal line.0

We find it hard to unlock teams who put so many players behind the ball. I thought Gordon and Madueke were poor. I think Rashford and Saka when fit, should play. Also disappointed with Bellingham.3
-
That sort of panned out as I fearedmit would but I thought we would have enough to nick a 1-0 win. As it was, we did very little at all first half and while I hope he comes good, Madueke looked like little more than a Tyreece upgrade with limited end product and an inability to provide a deadly pass.
The second half continued the same, but Ghana began to counter at speed. I'll give the Pickford incident the benefit, but Konsa was badly caught out in bother incidents and the second one was a stonewall penalty and probable red card.
No need to panic, but no reason to imagine we'll be in the final.
The good news is a lot if world Cup winners start off crsp, so it could all be a cunning plan, but there is a huge lack of creativity there and we need a couple of good players to become great in the next week.
Bring on Panama.3 -
The Konsa one was a definite penalty, not sure what colour the card would have been as that depends on whether the officials consider his challenge a genuine attempt to get the ball or not.
The draw effectively sends Ghana through, so they weren't as bothered as they might have been.0 -
It was strange that the Ghanian player did not appeal for the penalty whatsoever. It makes me think he had already lost his balance and was on the way down.0
-
I always thought this would be the toughest game in the group, and so it proved. No idea what the commentators saw that I didn't in both the Pickford and the Konsa incidents? Pickford was clearly the victim (see Forever Addickted's screen shot) and Konsa clearly got nowhere near the ball, the offside was after the tackle.
So much for the time wasting crackdown, it feels like (and not just last night) that the water break is ignored and simply not added on.2 -
Have to admit it would be funny if Croatia beat Ghana to dump them third, and its ultimately the point last night that sees Ghana advance as a third place team with Scotland being the team thats knocked out.2

Not overly bothered. Even World Cup winners have had shaky results in the group stages — Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia in 2022 and still went on to lift the trophy.
I also don't think we'll face many teams in the knockout rounds that are content to sit in and play for a point. The games should be far more open, similar to the Croatia match, which ought to suit us better.
Panama should be a different test as well. A draw does little for their chances of progressing, so they'll have to be more proactive than Ghana were.

Would they sit back and defend then? Possibly, get a point to return home with some pride.Croydon said:

Feel for the English fans who might have paid a fortune for tickets, travel, hotels, meals, drinks etc to go to the one game they could just afford to attend .. the game was rubbish, England seemed all too content to drop into the defensive web that Ghana spun.
As in most international tournaments, the 'middle games' when teams are concentrating more on not getting eliminated rather than winning, the football is just not worth watching0 -
Or they might go for at and at least score a goal in this World Cup?CAFCTrev said:

I’d be tempted to try Stones and Guehi against Panama. Konsa is obviously a good Premier League CB but I couldn’t believe how slow he was on the ball.We didn’t even move it quickly between the CBs, let alone play much forward.Add in the potential penalty incident and it starts to look a bit ropey.3
-
I watched the penalty incident many times. Does anyone else think that the Ghanaian forward puts a hand out which touches Konsa's midriff before Konsa comes across him? Is it conceivable that this brush could be construed as enough to put Konsa off balance and mistime his tackle? In which case, the first offence is the 'push' on Konsa and a free kick to us. I'm not convinced, but the Ghanaian did seem to go down easily, albeit they were both moving at full tilt.3

Quite remarkably he got the FIFA man of the match award.raytreacy said:We find it hard to unlock teams who put so many players behind the ball. I thought Gordon and Madueke were poor. I think Rashford and Saka when fit, should play. Also disappointed with Bellingham.
To his credit though he admitted that he didn't deserve it and it should've been a Ghanaian.4 -
Also think we need to bring O'Reilly back in. Some of the attacking positions he takes up are surely going to benefit us more than having Spence out there. Although to be fair i don't think Spence did anything wrong.Laddick01 said:I’d be tempted to try Stones and Guehi against Panama.
