I had never hear of "wet bulb temperature" as a metric until this week but now I am very invested!

    Explanation here: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/blog/2025/what-wet-bulb-temperatures-are-and-what-they-are-used-for

In short it combines temperature and humidity and acts an indicator of survivability in hot conditions. E.g.40 degrees celcius and 75% humidity gets you a wet bulb temperature of around 35 which is a threat to human life. A really interesting way to look at things.

Can track it here. currently parts of the UK peaking at 26. https://meteologix.com/uk/observations/england/wet-bulb-temperature/20260624-1100z.html

Obviously with no school and air temperature high, no exercise at all today.
So home safely in the shade with the blinds shut and windows and doors open to try and get as much breeze through the house as possible.
This is how they thank us!
    🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️😂😂😂

I’ve used wet bulb temperatures all my life in industrial refrigeration, as an example you use 35c wet bulb to size an evaporative condenser (the outside bit of kit that throws away the heat to the atmosphere) but this is the first time that I heard that 35c wet bulb is a threat to human life, bit worrying as even in this country 35 c is unlikely but is possible.

Interesting article about the difficulties of getting accurate place=specific temperature estimates for a heatwave.  https://www.reading.ac.uk/news/2026/Expert-Comment/Heatwave-forecast-challenges-and-weather-warnings-importance-explained

I’ve swerved the trains since Monday but gotta go in either tomorrow or Friday. Temperature wise, tomorrow looks more favourable…but trains will be quieter on Friday 🤔

Rather than a meme (with wrong data) here is some actual data on this comparison oh and summer 2025 was a lot cooler than 2026 has been already. From University of Reading (one of the best climate data departments in the world). They are all on the same scale so you cannot claim its a case of presenting colours differently.

1976 was different sort of heatwave anyway.

Some very hot temperatures of course, but the big issue was the length of the warm period and the terrible drought, as there was basically very warm with no rain for months and months.

Totally agree it was an exceptional long heatwave. If I remember correctly 1976 is still a record holder for the longest run of day above 30c (might have been 32c) 18 consecutive days, that’s why it remembered, plus the ladybirds, standpipes and of course share a bath with a friend. Re the lack of rain again going from memory the south east went something like 45 days without a single drop of rain.

I think the big difference between then and now is the humidity. Certainly I’m not disagreeing about climate change, I started reading papers re climate change in the ‘70’s and acting upon it probably late ‘80’s / 90. In my opinion there’s no doubt the climate is warming.

If there is a point at all it’s just TV graphics were somewhat primitive in 1976 and heat maps weren’t really a thing. Many of us still watching in black and white after all !

We will be if we carry on as we are. I feel for the children of today who will have to live with the failure of this generation to take this seriously.

UK has now hit the hottest June day ever. 108 deaths attributed to the record June heat in Spain. Records set in France.

This heat and humidity is awful, I hate it.

Ah, the standard response to a stupid shared post - 'it was just a joke'.

Sadly, it's not 'just a joke'. Same as those 'remember when Britain was great and you could actually get a 99 Flake for 99p' posts which are invariably shared by the same alt-right account based in Bagalore/Cambodia/Russia simply for the purpose of sowing discord amongst the elderly. And, like the Manchurian Candidate, en masse, they all stand up as one to pronounce that Britain was better 'in the good old days' (the subtext being, even if they don't realise it, that IMMERGRUNTS have ruined the country)

It's truly tragic how much of a disease social media is.

I thought I was doing ok with the heat, pacing myself, keeping hydrated etc but it has been so ‘close’ today that I felt panicky that I couldn’t get away from it. Really unpleasant feeling as there are things I have to do outside to look after the hens. I’m having more problems with it psychologically than physically tbh.

Only if you want to perceive it that way.

    Just a funny to me.

No one is denying the science. I see it as ‘how’ it’s reported not the underlying story.

The defence of a like for like heatmap proves the science but they were not how we reported weather back then.

As I recall we likely didn’t much show weather beyond the UK either!

The problem isn't you. You have a bit more common sense and appreciation for what social media is trying to do to you. It's for the generation that grew up without it being all encompassing in their daily lives, and don't have the necessary experience to see where they're being exploited. I've seen this first hand - being literally right on the edge of that generation. The people affected by this are the same people who forwarded emails twenty years ago saying Bill Gates was going to give them 20 dollars each time they did so. Being responsible for antispam/mail security in the late 2000s, I can tell you that cohort of people is absolutely vast. They're the same people who still clicking obvious phishing emails at work. Just because you have the faculties necessary to suss it out, doesn't mean everyone does.

Another monthly record moves to the right hand side of the chart, and still there are buffoons comparing the current climate to 1976.  It's really happening folks 😔.
