That’s a bit unfair if you are aiming your insult at my post, I was explaining why people of my generation think ‘76 was an exception heatwave, when those two fact of 18 days without temperatures above 30c or 45 days without a drop of rain, then you can call me a buffon.

I don't think he was referring to you (though read today it was 13 consecutive days above 30 - and only in a limited part of the country) he was referring to the known troll who posted a meme with incorrect information in it.

Related for those suggesting a future need to get air con installed in residential settings will this not actually add to the root causes of climate change?

Surely rampant over consumerism is part of the problem?

Those more basic suggestions about black out blinds, external shuttters and when to
open / not open windows are  potentially better solutions in some respects?

just musing about how we individually can actually improve things in the medium/long term

Look like we were both incorrect this is from BBC weather

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/articles/cg5pjlyjrq8o

It’s a very interesting article not only looking at 1976 but looking forward as well, I just show below the portion covering 1976, which state 15 days above 32.2c admittedly it also states somewhere within the UK, which obviously slipped my memory. But what made things worse was the 14 month drought, hence the major water shortage.

Why was the summer of 1976 so significant?

Scorched into the minds of a nation, the heatwave of 1976 is still recognised as one of the UK's most iconic weather events.

Images of dried river beds, near-empty reservoirs and queues of people waiting their turn to collect water from standpipes accompany memories relentless sunshine and heat.

The summer stood out for not just how high temperatures got, but also how long the heat lasted.

The country experienced two distinct peaks in heat: one that straddled the end of June and early July, with another through the middle part of August.

There were an incredible 15 consecutive days, from 23 June to 7 July, where somewhere in the UK recorded a temperature of 32.2C (90F) or higher.

London Heathrow notched up 16 consecutive days of 30C (86F) or more around the same time.

The hottest day of the summer was 3 July, when the mercury soared to 35.9C (97F) in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

A June temperature record of 35.6C (96F) was set on the 28 June in Southampton.

Absolutely not aiming it at you our your post @CharltonKerry, which I think was very reasonable. Apologies for any misunderstandings on that front. As Canter's has already picked up, it was that stupid meme that was the object of my ire.

Played 18 holes at Royal Ashdown this morning, front 9 was bearable but fook me,it warmed up on the back 9. 5 litres of water drank walking round and only 1 comfort break
I was out playing at 7:30, again the front nine was perfect weather scored 22 points, then it was baking the back 9 and scored 10 points. Bloody weather !! 😎

Another monthly record moves to the right hand side of the chart, and still there are buffoons comparing the current climate to 1976.  It's really happening folks 😔.
I suspect by September that chart won't need anything before the 40s, and by the end of the decade probably can start in the 2000's

Yeah, long and dry and hotter than average with a couple peaks that were into the 30s. But peak temperatures were limited geographically and the whole event was limited to three quarters of the UK and wasn't across continents like we see today.

Ok I give up, you win. Enjoy the summer  :) All I was trying to explain was simply the reason why people of my generation remembers the exceptional ‘76 heatwave. Think I might have failed.

Out of interest this heat wave is limited as well, Shetland had a maximum temperature of only 16c.

Rather than a meme (with wrong data) here is some actual data on this comparison oh and summer 2025 was a lot cooler than 2026 has been already. From University of Reading (one of the best climate data departments in the world). They are all on the same scale so you cannot claim its a case of presenting colours differently.

yeah but someone on boomer facebook got this from their mate in St Peterberg, who they share their bank details with
Or it was just a bit of fun?

If there is a point at all it’s just TV graphics were somewhat primitive in 1976 and heat maps weren’t really a thing. Many of us still watching in black and white after all !

Ah, the standard response to a stupid shared post - 'it was just a joke'.

Sadly, it's not 'just a joke'. Same as those 'remember when Britain was great and you could actually get a 99 Flake for 99p' posts which are invariably shared by the same alt-right account based in Bagalore/Cambodia/Russia simply for the purpose of sowing discord amongst the elderly. And, like the Manchurian Candidate, en masse, they all stand up as one to pronounce that Britain was better 'in the good old days' (the subtext being, even if they don't realise it, that IMMERGRUNTS have ruined the country)

It's truly tragic how much of a disease social media is.
Only if you want to perceive it that way.

    Just a funny to me.

No one is denying the science. I see it as ‘how’ it’s reported not the underlying story.

The defence of a like for like heatmap proves the science but they were not how we reported weather back then.

As I recall we likely didn’t much show weather beyond the UK either!
The problem isn't you. You have a bit more common sense and appreciation for what social media is trying to do to you. It's for the generation that grew up without it being all encompassing in their daily lives, and don't have the necessary experience to see where they're being exploited. I've seen this first hand - being literally right on the edge of that generation. The people affected by this are the same people who forwarded emails twenty years ago saying Bill Gates was going to give them 20 dollars each time they did so. Being responsible for antispam/mail security in the late 2000s, I can tell you that cohort of people is absolutely vast. They're the same people who still clicking obvious phishing emails at work. Just because you have the faculties necessary to suss it out, doesn't mean everyone does.
And the next step in your thought process is to decide that because the masses are so pig ignorant someone with superior thinking skills (guess who that might be?) will decide what is good for them.

Unfortunately, it's been tried before (Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Nicola Sturgeon et al) and it doesn't normally work out in the long run.

I was a bloody nuisance as a kid. And in 76 when there were stickers everywhere at school saying don’t waste water. I got caught deliberately turning all the taps on.

    Straight to the headmaster.

Not my best day’s work I must say.

Sorry it’s the heat, think I totally misread it, can I also blame old age. Actually I’m starting to chill out, well having my G and T. Think I’m having a bad day, time to shut up, until the cooler weather reappears early next week.

Southeastern are a joke frankly, that said, I get my usual 7:01 train and it's OK, stay in the office until 7 and get the 7:20, hot but bearable. Many more days like this though and I'll probably switch to Blackfriars to Bickley, at least they are generally air conditioned trains 9 times out of 10.

Think the heat has gone to your head chap.

It was making light of blokes with man boobs. If it triggers you so much may I suggest a gym membership. Nothing to do with age.

I challenge you to find a comment from me that uses the word boomer in a derogatory way or is ageist. I actively push back on the generational comparisons as I realised they are divisive and detract from the real issues by keeping normal people fighting amongst themselves and not concentrating on the hostile economic conditions that are enabling the oligarchical system to exploit us all.

And dinosaur isn't a reference to your age it's that your views are pre-historic.

Very busy Greenwich park at 6 am this morning woth people out getting dog walks in before it was too hot. Exchanged a few pleasantries with Frank the Yank.

Went for a run at 8, probably a bit late had to stop after 7k as was getting too hot at fairly low speeds.

Its been quite cool in the house with the windows open. Glad i swerved south eastern though.

Most annoying thing is the heat seems to have done something to the smoke detectors in the house and they were all beeping at me every 2 minutes, they arent so fucking chipper now they are all disconnected from the mains with the reserve batteries out lying on the kitchen table.

Early dog walks again tomorrow and by chance dog to groomers so he'll have a bit shorter cut than normal.
