Fuck's sake people, enough with the personals. Yes, we're all too bloody hot, probably haven't had enough sleep and aren't quite at our best as a result. Just give people the benefit of the doubt, and if you can't manage that, go and have a lie down in front of a fan in a darkened room, rather than going off on one at people in your phone.

Rather than a meme (with wrong data) here is some actual data on this comparison oh and summer 2025 was a lot cooler than 2026 has been already. From University of Reading (one of the best climate data departments in the world). They are all on the same scale so you cannot claim its a case of presenting colours differently.

yeah but someone on boomer facebook got this from their mate in St Peterberg, who they share their bank details with
Or it was just a bit of fun?

If there is a point at all it’s just TV graphics were somewhat primitive in 1976 and heat maps weren’t really a thing. Many of us still watching in black and white after all !

Ah, the standard response to a stupid shared post - 'it was just a joke'.

Sadly, it's not 'just a joke'. Same as those 'remember when Britain was great and you could actually get a 99 Flake for 99p' posts which are invariably shared by the same alt-right account based in Bagalore/Cambodia/Russia simply for the purpose of sowing discord amongst the elderly. And, like the Manchurian Candidate, en masse, they all stand up as one to pronounce that Britain was better 'in the good old days' (the subtext being, even if they don't realise it, that IMMERGRUNTS have ruined the country)

It's truly tragic how much of a disease social media is.
Only if you want to perceive it that way.

    Just a funny to me.

No one is denying the science. I see it as ‘how’ it’s reported not the underlying story.

The defence of a like for like heatmap proves the science but they were not how we reported weather back then.

As I recall we likely didn’t much show weather beyond the UK either!
The problem isn't you. You have a bit more common sense and appreciation for what social media is trying to do to you. It's for the generation that grew up without it being all encompassing in their daily lives, and don't have the necessary experience to see where they're being exploited. I've seen this first hand - being literally right on the edge of that generation. The people affected by this are the same people who forwarded emails twenty years ago saying Bill Gates was going to give them 20 dollars each time they did so. Being responsible for antispam/mail security in the late 2000s, I can tell you that cohort of people is absolutely vast. They're the same people who still clicking obvious phishing emails at work. Just because you have the faculties necessary to suss it out, doesn't mean everyone does.
And the next step in your thought process is to decide that because the masses are so pig ignorant someone with superior thinking skills (guess who that might be?) will decide what is good for them.

Unfortunately, it's been tried before (Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Nicola Sturgeon et al) and it doesn't normally work out in the long run.
Can't believe your putting those three alongside Sturgeon. They would be appalled to be associated with that evil woman

Very busy Greenwich park at 6 am this morning woth people out getting dog walks in before it was too hot. Exchanged a few pleasantries with Frank the Yank.

Went for a run at 8, probably a bit late had to stop after 7k as was getting too hot at fairly low speeds.

Its been quite cool in the house with the windows open. Glad i swerved south eastern though.

Most annoying thing is the heat seems to have done something to the smoke detectors in the house and they were all beeping at me every 2 minutes, they arent so fucking chipper now they are all disconnected from the mains with the reserve batteries out lying on the kitchen table.

Early dog walks again tomorrow and by chance dog to groomers so he'll have a bit shorter cut than normal.
I'm hoping that Frank's nomenclature is inspired by the country of his birth, rather than his propensity for public onanism.

Same with our carbon monoxide alarm

Have just had to take batteries out as constant beeping is giving us all really bad headaches

That’s a bit unfair if you are aiming your insult at my post, I was explaining why people of my generation think ‘76 was an exception heatwave, when those two fact of 18 days without temperatures above 30c or 45 days without a drop of rain, then you can call me a buffon.
I don't think he was referring to you (though read today it was 13 consecutive days above 30 - and only in a limited part of the country) he was referring to the known troll who posted a meme with incorrect information in it.
Troll because I posted a meme, wow you really need to lighten up. You do realise other people can think differently to you right? If they do it doesn’t make them stupid or a troll. The summer gets hot buddy if you want to run around crying then that’s your choice like everyone in this world you are entitled to act and think what you like, but I choose to enjoy it instead of getting all upset that the end is coming, have a beer outside and put the BBQ on enjoy life you might actually loosen up a little instead of looking at heat maps and charts getting yourself worked up.

June 2026 has been extremely cool and average but all the media choose to focus on the 3 days it’s been hot but ignore the other 27 days.

Still to be confirmed officially, but last night expected to be the warmest June night ever. Sleeping in such heat is difficult and certainly not enjoyable.

It's too hot to do anything. Although I only work a couple of days a week, I had booked leave this week, but it's too hot to do anything other than sit indoors.

We all know that 1976 was a very hot, dry summer but was a one off, that's why it is so memorable. The above link puts it into context and why the impact in a warming climate is so much greater than in 1976.

Many of those who remember 1976 are now pensioners and unable to cope with these high temperatures. It's definitely a worry to think that heatwaves are going to become much more frequent.

Hose pipe ban imposed by South East Water due to high temperatures and excessive demand.

    But not until 3rd July.

Can't be that much of an issue then.

For Kent the hose pipe ban is from today, but enforced from 3rd July.

Now that things on here have calmed down I’ll have my say on 1976.  Firstly, we are lucky to have thermometers because humans are pretty lousy at judging and remembering temperature-related information.  Everyone is pointing out the 1976 summer which was the warmest on record using the Central England Temperature (CET) but nobody has made any comments about 2025 which is slightly more recent.  Summer 2025 wasn’t particularly hot - there were very few really hot days.  It wasn’t noteable at all.  Yet it equalled 1976 for CET and using the Met Office calculation method was the warmest summer on record.

I guess we are just getting used to higher temperatures but allow our memories to mislead us with past summer comparisons.  As an example, summer 2024 was the coolest since 2015 yet when compared to the 1960s would have been the warmest.

For all of the anger on this thread it amounts to "man shouts at cloud". Both of these things are true:

    1. Global warming is real, and it is happening.
    2. We have never been more aware about man's impact on this and we are addressing it.

Shouting and putting up graphs doesn't change a thing. We each have an individual responsibility to do the right thing and make conscious choices which don't damage the planet on a daily basis.... simple as that. Go about your lives with awareness and enjoy yourself!

Unless you have the ability to personally lobby China, the US and India, then sadly your righteous anger is wasted.
