Very sad it is all over for Stokes and can only stand and applaud his career and achievements.
But also very glad something is changing in this setup. The only enjoyable part of the series has been watching NZ play in a manner befitting of test cricket. They have been outstanding and we could learn a lot from them.3 -
Smith should have stuck to breastfeeding if that WAS his call.....
Oh well. 2 of Surrey's finest to save the day now

Root was the non striker and the ball was played behind square. Whether or not Smith called, Root should have declined it.Fanny Fanackapan said:Smith should have stuck to breastfeeding if that WAS his call.....

Poor batting by the world's best batter. But absolutely brilliant bit of fielding.0 -
The way these bowlers are dropping makes last night even more frustrating2
-
If anyone had said that NZ would win the 3rd test and win the series without Henry, Williamson, Phillips and Jamison in the decider and O'Rourke now unfit; after the 1st test you could have got a great price.
2 -
O'Rourke is now going off injured. Let's think what might have happened had we taken the sensible approach to this chase last night against a seam bowling attack of Foulkes, Smith and Sears who have 17 Tests between them.2
-
As has been noticed elsewhere, the batters who teed off yesterday (minus Stokes) are involved in the upcoming white ball series and were doing white ball nets this morning. Seems unlikely to be a coincidence and on top of a mindset issue points to an issue with scheduling and also having a head coach who covers all formats0
-
Listening to the NZ players talking about how ridiculous we were yesterday sums things up. Asking "what are they doing?" is a question that Stokes and McCullum will fudge with their usual BS. They've learnt nothing since that vital Ashes Test which we lost, with Lyon out of the game, because we kept taking on the short ball and Root thinking he was Jos Buttler ramping in the IPL. The direction from the management has been hopeless.4
-
"what are they doing" picked up on the mic when Brook hits the ball down the throat of the fielder.
Rob Key did say play smart cricket not dumb cricket but I know he's public enemy number 1.
When Ben Stokes said "Follow me" I believe Brook took it literally and tried to emulate Stokes by playing T20 cricket despite smart cricket would've given England a chance to win or at least get a draw with common sense against a depleted bowling line up.

Gus Atkinson has faced more balls over his 2 innings in this Test than any of his 10 other team mates.
This pitch is not a demon. Bat sensibly (as Mitchell showed yesterday) then runs can be had.
The plot should have been to keep Brook & Stokes back for an assault after tea if the chase was on.
Ps. As I type Atkinson gets a good delivery that skids on & gets him LBW.1 -

Decent effort by Atkinson showing that it isn't impossible to stick around.0

Brave effort, Gus.

Praising a Surrey player is a rarity 😁2 -
One more offence like that and Fanny is likely to be sacked as leader of the Kent Dance Troupe!blackpool72 said:

Did he bat Number 6 or Number 10?LenGlover said:

If Brain dead Brook gets the captaincy stewarded by Key and McCullum then we would most definitely fall a further 4 or 5 years behind the likes of Oz.
Time to find a whole new broom and start the rebuild.2 -
We could have won this Test if McCallum & Stokes hadn’t thrown it away yesterday with that ludicrous Bazball session.
We lost the 2nd Test as well due to whatever Atkinson & Stokes got up to between Tests & then selecting at least 2 players not up to the job.
We selected Archer in the 2nd Test, when not fit to bowl sufficiently in a 5 day game.
Personally I’d prefer Stokes to stay as he is irreplaceable, but I think Key & McCallum are still demonstrating a lack of cricketing nouse & should be sacked.3 -
Archer didn't play in the 1st Test. He was in Barbados having a rest after the IPL. He couldn't bowl for an hour and a half on the second morning of the 2nd Test due to stiffness caused, as you intimate, from not having bowled any long spells in preparation for this series.Covered End said:We could have won this Test if McCallum & Stokes hadn’t thrown it away yesterday with that ludicrous Bazball session.

At least give Smith a chance to get another test 50.
Tongue keeping taking a single on the last ball is weird. I know it's all over but fight to the bitter end and let's see Smith batting.

Wondering if it was an attempt to get Smith facing the spinner?soapboxsam said:At least give Smith a chance to get another test 50.

Could be an important knock for Smith. If there is to be regime change his place would be questioned0
-
That is a phenomenal bit of fielding0
-
Chaos to the end but the NZ fielding has been sublime since they dropped so many catches in that 1st test.
At least I got my wish to see Smith hit 3 fours in a row.1 -
Right, time for a Bashir century0
-
2 run outs is unforgivable1
-
Jamie Smith has been taking advice from Geoff Boycott. Unfortunately, it was about his running

Atherton sums it up so well "For England Bazball dies where it all began". Here's hoping it really is dead.2

They think it's all over...0

Probably would have won this if we didn’t piss about last night. Braindead.1
