An Aussie take on that day:

Stokes and the ECB comms team orchestrate an announcement of his retirement to coincide with his 11th over of a spell. There's a standing ovation once the crowd hears that he's retiring.

Then Stokes gets a "pole" and there's another standing ovation.

It's tea so there's another standing ovation.

He gets a guard of honour from his team when they return to the field after tea. There's a standing ovation from the crowd.

NZ are all out and Stokes promotes himself to opening the batting, taps Gay on the shoulder, run/limps from the field to a standing ovation.

Emerges from the dressing room to bat to a guard of honour from NZ and a standing ovation.

Then he's out and departs to a standing ovation.

And at the end of the afternoon, when you look back on it, Stokes took one wicket, scored 30 runs and took England to the precipice of a record-breaking loss to a NZ 2nd XI.

The headlines read "Ben Stokes was fallible but that is what made him the people's champion"

I'm just hoping that after spending 9 months with his wife & kids he'll answer a call from the ECB to play in the Ashes.

Bet the ECB and Durham in particular must be upset at the missed opportunity of not starting today's game at say 2.00pm and then showing the football match straight after. The place would be drunk dry by the end!!!

Would have been good for Indian TV too right?

Obviously, you can't totally schedule cricket around the (football) World Cup, but awful timing to have the game on at the same time as the England game.

And it's not as if they didn't know the WC schedule, and the high probability of England winning their group and playing their R32 game at 5pm today.

It'll be 10pm in Delhi when the game starts at C-l-S
Can't see the Indian TV companies/BCCI having any problems with that

Shame we are playing them 8 times in these games and not proper test cricket.

The England players will be gutted that the rain didn't come at 5pm, so that they could watch the football.

    "Don't Mention The Score"

Dont mention the score the classic Likely Lads episode that perfected the art of self-isolation

And that India chose to bat first, could have watched from the dug out

Should have started the game at 2.00pm as I suggested previously. They would have got a full game in and the spectators would have been able to watch the football too.

Cummins has said that he and a few other Australians have turned down the offer of £500k to play in The Hundred for playing two Tests against Bangladesh. They are doing so because they are desperate to play for their country in the Ashes and do not want anything to reduce the possibilities of that happening.

Due to the IPL, Archer missed the First Test against NZ and then wasn't fit enough to bowl for the crucial opening 90 minutes of the second day due to stiffness, Bethell didn't have a single red ball match prior to the series and Cox spent the duration of the IPL carrying drinks or fielding. Now Cox is different in the sense that he has no central contract and did come back to play for the Lions and one game for Essex but he was still contracted to his county.

We've seen it all before with World Cups when our players have had next to zero 50 over games and when we've gone into the Ashes against what was a sub-standard and injury hit Australian side with no proper warm up games. We will not have a better chance to defeat them than next summer. Let's hope we don't prepare to fail. Again.

AA I would be shocked to see Jofra in a Sussex shirt before the Ashes. Won't want to upset his future Indian paymasters.

    * He's also out of contract and I wonder if he even stays unless he likes the Brighton lifestyle.

Have they brought the boundaries in today ?  It seems everytime ball hits bat it goes for a four or a six 🤔

Tongue goes for 20 in his 2nd over. Jacks now getting bashed around.

For anyone who's been to the Rose Bowl please, would you agree Southampton Airport is the better station for the shuttle bus? I'll be at the India game next Saturday.

That was a clean catch but 3rd umpire believes it hit the ground first.
The umpires in the middle don't even know who is meant to be on strike now..
