And what gems have the scouts discovered over the last couple of seasons ?? More duds than gems I'd say. Not knocking the 2 newbies as I'd need to see them in action first, but for every Lloyd Jones there are 2 players who we loaned out last season as they weren't good enough.Redrobo said:
You can’t have it both ways. Trust your scouts or buy proven.charltonbob said:
That's what I was thinking, I know nothing about Mesik but did see a video of "the best of" Koumetio & wasn't that impressed, though later somebody did say that there was a video uploaded from his younger days, whether it was that one I don't know. My concern is we are again (so far) signing players that are unproven at championship level & with Jones & Ramsey yet to sign new contracts, it's a slight worrygolfaddick said:
Are these 2 new recruits world beaters then ? No-one has seen them play yet. Yes, they may turn out to be inspired signings like Lloyd Jones and Kayne Ramsay......or they might turn out to be duds like Tanto & Ahadme.Crispywood said:Can we just appreciate in the space of 24hours we may have gone from Gillesphey LCB and TC LWB to Koumetio LCB and Mesik LWB
The proof, as they say, is in the eating.
Proven Championship players cost. A lot. Spend on one or two and sign some freebies? V trust your scouts and buy potential, sell for profit and build.4 -
Chapple seems to be having an influence on our scouting now so fingers crossed for the midfield.8

And there are some on here trying to tell us that we will get bigger attendances this season than W Ham.gringo said:West Ham have today announced 42,000 season tickets sold.
I offered a bet in favour of the Upbeats, but amazingly they declined.
They would have lost before the season started, most of us knew.2 -

Probably has the techinque for it but whether he would have the positional awareness IQ and engine is another question.bertpalmer said:

The majority seem to be pleased with our 2 new signings.
I’ll be honest in that I’d never heard of either and didn’t know most of our fans watched so many Dundee and Heracles games last season.
Heres hoping.19 -
I think because they are at a good age, cheap with a half decent pedigree and could improve but ultimately it's the midfield what makes or breaks this window we have to get in class proven or top pedigree players in this positions which you can't really skimp on as doc and cov aren't going to cut it.Covered End said:The majority seem to be pleased with our 2 new signings.

Personally I have a bit more faith in the club as a whole over the last few years, and given the progress we’ve made under Jones, I feel more inclined to be pleased with who we’ve been bringing in on that basis, but I know nothing about either so would never categorically say ‘great signing’ etcCovered End said:The majority seem to be pleased with our 2 new signings.

and of course we now know that we came unstuck with some of the additions of last season, so we haven’t got it completely right.I like the physicality of both signings so far.It certainly makes a change from the days of signing Terrell Thomas, Ryan Inniss and those 3 loanees we brought in on deadline day a couple of years ago, the Man City duo and the Luton lad. I can’t even remember their names now they were that forgettable8 -
Sichenje was acknowledged as an early capture which would have otherwise been landed this summer, so that is three athletic/no nonsense CBs in to bolster Jones, Bell and Ramsay. That’ll be the 6 I reckon, Gough as the 7th back up, all else out perm or loan (Mitchell).Wing backs and B2B mid have to be next priorities surely.6
-
Given last seasons recruiting disaster I’m going to wait until we’ve played a few games to judge any of these players.8
-
Gough is one of the really interesting ones. Keep around because he can play CB/CDM and in an inevitable injury crisis that's handy to have or get him a really good League 1 loan for the season?3

Gough was absolutely excellent when he played last season, didn’t put a foot wrong. I would be tempted to keep him for the inevitable scenario you’ve mentionedMarcusH26 said:Gough is one of the really interesting ones. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen that we get an injury crisis but I think with the players we now have we’d be incredibly unlucky. On that basis I’d prefer Gough out in league one to get games and experience rather than have him kicking his heels at Sparrows.ns9 said:

Possibly a bit of both - get him half a season on loan to bring him on and from January he can start to fight for a squad place. Or alternatively he stays until January and then maybe a loan out depending on how we're doing.MarcusH26 said:Gough is one of the really interesting ones. Bell, Kelman, Clarke, Bree, Coady, Dykes, Carey and Knibbs were all ok imho. Knibbs was injury hit but that lad has an eye for goal and fully fit all season I reckon will hit 6-8 which is a big tick at this level.AberystwythAddick said:Given last seasons recruiting disaster I’m going to wait until we’ve played a few games to judge any of these players.Appreciate some were way off the mark too but don’t think the overall incomings were disastrous last year. We’re going to get hits and misses. When clubs accumulate c15 hits they are the ones that ordinarily charge into the promotion push. May take us another season or two but think we are making progress.17 -

Quite right, I don’t really get this framing of our recruitment being a disaster.RC_CAFC said:

Not even highly successful teams manage to do that, never-mind a team in our position with our budget.Ultimately the last few years we have improved our league position year on year, so the team is improving even if amongst that there have been some signing which have not worked out.21 -
Two of are most expensive signings of the last 10 years were loaned back to league one. That is a disaster.RC_CAFC said:

We also signed 2 players on a free that were probably in our top 3 players of the season. It can’t have been that bad if we managed to stay upAberystwythAddick said:

Disaster would have been the majority of incoming players being awful and us being relegated. That didn’t happen. Because two players didn’t work out last season doesn’t mean we had a “recruiting disaster”. We were new to the championship and some signings didn’t work out, it happens.AberystwythAddick said:

No. You need to judge them now. And with extreme prejudice. Thats the Charlton wayAberystwythAddick said:Given last seasons recruiting disaster I’m going to wait until we’ve played a few games to judge any of these players.5 -
Neither strike me as walking straight into the starting 11 ahead of Edwards and Bell, two of our better players. We arguably needed better depth in those positions over two immediate first choices.Covered End said:The majority seem to be pleased with our 2 new signings.

Heres hoping.
Jones has a good record with defensive signings though so I’m hopeful. They’re young enough to improve and may need time to settle in.
The midfield and right wing back signings will be the most interesting for me, I hope that’s where the bulk of the budget is going. Get those right and it could really improve us.8 -
The recruitment will be a disaster if they don’t address the midfield problem .1
