Sonny Carey - scored goals, won us points. Good signingAberystwythAddick said:
Two of are most expensive signings of the last 10 years were loaned back to league one. That is a disaster.RC_CAFC said:
We stayed up. It wasn't a disaster.AberystwythAddick said:Given last seasons recruiting disaster I’m going to wait until we’ve played a few games to judge any of these players.
Thomas Kaminski - had some good moments, had shit moments, still kept clean sheets. I think falls into a Mediocre signing bracket - wasn't worth it, but if we'd signed him on a free I think we'd be viewing it more positively
Tanto Olaofe - got the winner at Sheff Utd, but obviously not worked out. Bad signing
Amari'i Bell - crucial to how we play. Indisputably good signing
Reece Burke - injured, not very good when back from injury, despite looking like he could have had something about him at some point. Fairly bad signing (but as he didn't really start for us not as bad as Tanto)
Joe Rankin-Costello - didn't really play much; felt he was a bit of a project. Had some great games and some very very middling ones, probably more of the latter. Mediocre signing
Rob Apter - very confusing but as it stands, bad signing
Charlie Kelman - oh man. Jury still out for me. Mediocre signing in terms of outlay but there's clearly something about him...
Harvey Knibbs - hmm. Not as good as Sonny Carey. Popped up with the odd goal; not sure he's our guy really. Mediocre signing
Collins Sichenje - jury still out
Lyndon Dykes - good signing - helped us get the points we needed.
Roussillon, Hernandez no longer at club. Obviously were toilet but not here long enough.
So I make that three good signings - all of which were cheap/free - and three bad ones, two of which cost fees.
If you look at each player on an individual basis then yes, the three bad signings look pretty piss poor, but to ignore Carey and Bell who were freebies is short-sighted.
Would like a better hit rate this window, but if the above sort of activity has us surviving in the Champ, and now we have a tiny bit more wiggle room, then hopefully things can continue on an upward trajectory.
But how you'd deem the above a "disaster" is really funny lol8 -
As Jones, Chapple and everyone involved in the process will be extremely aware of. But that is one area that probably will take time as finding and signing players of the quality we need (probably against competing interest) won't be straightforward.Ruffdiamond said:The recruitment will be a disaster if they don’t address the midfield problem .0 -
Would maybe go higher on Kelman too. Took a while to get going but without that signing I think we’d be back in League One.
Hoping for 10/15 from him this season.11 -
Aberystwyth, you and everyone else were looking forward to seeing the players mentioned, perform for Charlton and it's fine being wise after the event but, most everyone was shocked at the level of the championship and it certainly hampered those players getting a run in the side. As a club you would probably hope that certain players can make the grade, whether we brought them in for a fee or developed them from our academy, it's never certain that they will be a success.AberystwythAddick said:

I also think we need to factor in the pressure we were under from our late promotion. Our team were a long way off being Championship ready and we needed a lot of new players in with a tight budget to play with.2 -

Expensive mistakes were made last season in Apter and Tanto but we stayed up.
An expensive mistake was made the year before in Ahadme but we went up.
We need more at RB and in midfield as well as up top but we still have two months to find them and as we've seen this week the club are very good at keeping deals under wraps until they appear on the OS.13 -
I was trying to balance good/mediocre/bad according to transfer fee as well, but in terms of performance I think Kelman and Sichenje will look like they belong here, in good time. A full pre-season for both will be important.
In any case, a similarly "disastrous" window would be seeing us noticeably improve our squad I think!4 -
Also people just have too high expectations. A hit rate of 50% is probably about average and anything higher is good. Since Jones joined I reckon our hit rate is above 50% and we’ve been pretty good with recruitment which is why we’ve gone up the pyramidfenaddick said:Jury still out on Sichenje feels harsh, I’d go with “promising signs”. But other than that, agree with @PaddyP17, far too many people ignoring the positive elements of our recruitment4 -

And there are some on here trying to tell us that we will get bigger attendances this season than W Ham.gringo said:West Ham have today announced 42,000 season tickets sold.
I offered a bet in favour of the Upbeats, but amazingly they declined.
They would have lost before the season started, most of us knew.0 -
Less then 50k in the London Stadium, and it will feel empty0
-
But it won’t be less than 50k ever
West Ham are a huge club with a massive floating support and they will still get 60k every week especially as I would expect them to get 100+ points next season5 -
I think Knibbs will show his worth this season too. For him and Kelman an interrupted pre-season was a tough start, and for both of them when they started to look like they might get going they got injured again. Full pre-season for both will hopefully see Kelman be our main man up top and Knibbs really push Carey for that starting spotPaddyP17 said:I was trying to balance good/mediocre/bad according to transfer fee as well, but in terms of performance I think Kelman and Sichenje will look like they belong here, in good time. Boy would I love them to do a Leicester! They won't but it would be hilarious.Southendaddick said:But it won’t be less than 50k ever

I agree with what was said above about some of us being shocked at how tough the Championship is. After five years away I had forgotten what it takes.
The penny dropped seeing Bell and realising that players as good as him was the basic Championship standard.13 -
New kit and a new player incoming….57

I think it was even better than 5 yrs ago, we were a bit blinded by our start and then the injuries kicked in, I think as fans and a club a lot was learned last season, I’m really excited for next.jose said:I agree with what was said above about some of us being shocked at how tough the Championship is. It’s going to be even tougher next season. I really fear for us, we really need to strengthen this summer to stay clear of the drop.jose said:I agree with what was said above about some of us being shocked at how tough the Championship is. After five years away I had forgotten what it takes.

Exactly, at his age & level he needs to be playing, not sitting on the bench where he might get the occasional 20 minutes or in the stands.ShootersHillGuru said:
I’m not saying it couldn’t happen that we get an injury crisis but I think with the players we now have we’d be incredibly unlucky. On that basis I’d prefer Gough out in league one to get games and experience rather than have him kicking his heels at Sparrows.ns9 said:
Gough was absolutely excellent when he played last season, didn’t put a foot wrong. I would be tempted to keep him for the inevitable scenario you’ve mentionedMarcusH26 said:Gough is one of the really interesting ones. Keep around because he can play CB/CDM and in an inevitable injury crisis that's handy to have or get him a really good League 1 loan for the season?0 -
Interesting! Fans, get ready and let us know in advance if are you:stjohnshill said:New kit and a new player incoming….

Hope it’s Brian De Keersmaecker or someone similar. With the club being tight lipped it could be anyone
