A damaging and humiliating defeat is on the cards v Mexico.  Then after that even if we fluked a win there. An honourable withdrawal from the competition would make sense at this stage and I'd be surprised if grounds for that have not been considered by the powers that be

I wouldn’t play Rice at RB, that's for sure
you are degrading two positions by doing that.

I know the so called wingers like cutting in, but was astounded didn't try switching flanks at any time.
The few times Madueke actually went past the left back, he couldn't do anything with his right foot, and Rashford had a couple of woeful attempts with his left.

Mexico haven't lost at the Azteca since 2013. I can't see us overcoming the altitude.
They haven’t played anyone in a competitive game there who you would consider top 20, lots of meh concacaf games and friendlies. They’ve drawn a lot there, so no, I wouldn’t be as fearful as some are
According to my amateur, surface-level research, we can expect our players to have a drop-off in their aerobic levels of 10-15%. Are we better than Mexico when our players get tired faster, and can't run or recover as much? I reckon on a good day, we are. We haven't looked like having a good day thus far in the tournament.

    Mexico I’d go:

    Pickford

    Rice
    Konsa
    Guehi
    O’Reily

    Mainoo
    Bellingham

    Saka
    Rogers
    Gordon

    Kane

I really hope they’ve had some altitude tents to prepare them for what’s to come.
Doing anything at high altitude when you’re not used to it is so hard and you never react to it the same way either.
Having said that, once they’re back down, they’ll be buzzing. So if by some miracle they do it…………🤩
Supposedly there’s two ways to best adapt, go early and get used to it or go as late as possible so your body isn’t trying to adapt too much
Turn up as the whistle blows..
That would be 25 minutes earlier than the DR Congo game

Mexico have been training together since 6th May as well which seems to have really helped with squad cohesion.

Can anyone tell me - can they take on oxygen from cylinders during the hydration breaks etc? Can't see why not? Might be beneficial to get the oxygen levels up at important intervals!

    That’s a good question.
But I bet they won’t be able to though.

    Only if it's Gatorade oxygen.

Maybe they have an oxygen tent by the dugouts.
Could also have some sherpas following the players around the pitch with oxygen cylinders strapped to their backs..

I cant see us beating Mexico. If Mexico start the game with the same intensity that they did against Ecuador we could end up a couple goals down early. We cant rely on getting bailed out by wonder goals every time.

I hope Im wrong, but they must surely be the favourites to win this game.

Banning taking on Oxygen in the water break might be a bit tricky

Next up Mexico, another tough match for various reasons though not necessarily because they are a better team than England and that along with its so far ‘cosseted’ fans have yet to be equally tested on the route to this stage.
I read that as 'closeted' fans.

Supplemental oxygen, by inhaling only rather than intravenously, is permitted under WADA regulations and FIFA has always followed their guidelines on the list of prohibited substances.
However FIFA vary from WADA on this issue and no supplementary oxygen is allowed on the field or during the match (e.g. substitutes).

If there was any fairness the Mexican players should inhale concentrated carbon dioxide cylinders and take sickness pills.

So, they haven't scored a goal at home against a team from Europe this decade.

I am feeling confident on this one

The Mexicans will be under home pressure to attack and take game to us, but meanwhile, our laborious passing game will mean we are not too affected by the altitude and will hopefully have them chasing shadows.

Weather forecast is relatively cool and, potentially, rain so not all bad.

It’s essential for all 11 players to be switched on from the start this time. That intensity from Mexico against Ecuador was superb, Ecuador didn’t know what hit them.

If we can keep it tight with no silly errors and actually be a team for first 20 minutes, think we will be okay. Also, from what I’ve seen this tournament, Mexico do get pretty tired late on after being so intense, and we have a far better subs bench than them to bring on fresh legs

Or about 60 minutes after it, as with the DR Congo match.

*Edit* hadn’t read the whole thread when I posted and see Covered End beat me to it.

How about a couple of spoonfuls of this in the water bottles?

Its OK, England camp have been chewing a local remedy for altitude sickness for weeks.

Tuchel said, rather more quickly than normal 'Many of the players have found that adding an alkaline substrate to the cud helps. We have had to take supplies away from the players on the right side of the pitch. What are their names again, cant remember doesnt matter, we have had to take supplies away from the players on the right side of the pitch as they were taking too much and losing concentration. '

Yeah I don't think ingesting peroxide is very good for you. I wonder if having oxygenated water (rather than carbonated) in their water bottles might have a marginal benefit though.
