Sorry to hear of this although he lived to a good age.
Very controversial figure and upfront with his opinions, for me I generally liked him but it was very poor form when he bad mouthed Matthew Harding after his passing in '96.

I remember beating Chelsea in the Premier League years and we were all standing outside the Oak when the Chelsea coach came past.
It got stuck outside for a few minutes due to the traffic and they got a lot of stick from gloating Charlton fans.
He took it well, not that he had much choice.

I never really took to Ken Bates, although he deserves great credit for re-uniting the freehold of Stamford Bridge with the club and then setting up Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO) by selling shares to ordinary fans.  CPO own the freehold of the footprint of the current stadium and it is leased back to Chelsea, who pay a nominal rent. The structure of CPO is such that no one person can unduly influence the company, thereby ensuring that the stadium is protected against avaricious property developers.

I remembered that he had been at Oldham and Leeds but forgot that Bates had also been a co-owner at Wigan.

I picked him up many years ago in my cab at Marylebone Station. He got in with two American backpackers took them to Kings X . He gets out gives them 2 pounds and walks away the fare was 6 pounds . I said to them do you know him they said he asked where we was going do we want share the cab as it would be cheaper. I told them he was millionaire who owned one of the clubs in London they were shocked. RIP
That is why he was a millionaire. Polite phrase is fiscally intelligent.

Gets a lot of stick but agreed to bring our home game against them in the early 80’s forward when we were struggling financially. FA cup games aside, would have been our biggest crowd of the season and the revenue helped us out.

FFS people defending Ken Bates! He regularly used offshore tax havens, presided over a bankrupt bank, and Chelsea and Leeds fans hated him due to behind the scenes machinations.

Facts are you have been trolling on this site for years seeking attention. People are saying RIP because he has now passed. Now is not the time to go into details about his past, especially as people have been warned about doing that on RIP threads. You will still do it though of course.

I don’t see a problem with it. Surely the thread should be to discuss someone’s life - the positives and negatives. If it spills over into personal abuse of that person, that’s a different story. But I don’t have any issue with a balanced argument on an individual, alive or dead.

Really Ben? As someone of Jewish heritage I deplore his many anti-Semitic statements, Id have thought you'd be a critic of him, not a fan.

He should have a ban put on him.
He overstepped the mark with the post.

His life was not being discussed by the poster, in his initial comment.

Why should we pay respects to a racist who lost two High Court cases for libel and harassment against co-director Melvyn Levi? He made money using other peoples cash.

I hope somebody does not say anything disrespectful when a loved one of yours passes away.
This is my final comment on the matter.

I’m sure I remember him turning away the TV people who wanted to show the “Battle Of The Bridge” game against Charlton. Saying you’ve not been here all season, so don’t turn up now. If people want to see the game, buy a ticket.

    Anybody else remember this ?

Went to one of those fans events with Martin Simons as visitor many moons ago. He said bates treated him like shit and clicked his fingers when he wanted something if he was in the room.

Would also talk him down in his earshot in the directors lounge.

    A big character. RIP.

If Uncle Roland or Southall peg it, this site will implode.

Baggsie Roland in a rare duct tape accidental strangulation.

Always invisaged a runaway steamroller accident for Southall.

As for Ken Bates.  RIP you whiffy old football man.
