I’m sure I remember him turning away the TV people who wanted to show the “Battle Of The Bridge” game against Charlton. Saying you’ve not been here all season, so don’t turn up now. If people want to see the game, buy a ticket.

    Anybody else remember this ?
Rings a bell, yes. Must confess, he did give me a few (slightly guilty) chuckles over the years with his pronouncements. I went to a few non-Charlton games over there, I seem to remember his programme notes once relating how Rod Stewart or Phil Collins wanted a ticket for a big game, and he told them to sling their hook as he hadn't seen them at Shrewsbury the year before. Never a dull moment, RIP.

I don't recall that - at that time there were no saturday evening highlights programmes on BBC or ITV, and coverage was limited to live Sunday matches (and they were relatively rare) so I'm not sure if this was ever up for coverage.

I recall this because I wanted to see the game again, and the only way to do that was by buying the video from Chelsea direct. It's probably still up in a loft somewhere, but now thankfully it's readily available on line.

    RIP Ken...

You are correct that the highlights had all but gone at this stage. But for some reason LWT decided to have a highlights programme on Sunday morning for the last 2 weeks of that season.

They wanted to show our game but Bates said they did not give enough notice (he went on about it in his column in the programme for our game). So LWT had to have Palace v Man City as there main game and at the start of the programme Brian Moore had to explain why

He had enough notice so he could write and file the copy in time for the programme to be printed, but not enough time to set up cameras. Jimmy Hill.

Nowt to do with setting up cameras, all to do with the contract notice period to show a game, which Bates held LWT to

Thanks - didn't recall that. A shame, as the quality would have been much better!

Ah, so he was just being a prick then. Fair enough.
