Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Just when you thought it was safe to leave the TV, along comes the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The opening ceremony at the Hydro centre will feature over 700 enthusiastic scots, who will no doubt be kicking their legs and flailing their arms around whilst fixing a smile that will prove how far Scottish dentistry needs to catch up. To boost the excitement it appears that Johnny Vegas will be bigging up the bowls and para bowls events.
Track and Field will take place at the 10,000 capacity Scotstoun stadium, other events take place at the Scottish Event Campus and the Tollcross International swimming Centre, which will host the … er swimming.
The event starts next Thursday the 23rd and ends on August 2nd. Not the most exciting tournament going, but I dunno … No matter what standard, when two or more people lay down a gauntlet to race each other you kinda have to watch … don't you?

Used to quite enjoy the Commonwealth Games, something a bit different to normal despite being a mini-Olympics as gave the likes of England, Scotland and Wales... even Isle of Man etc. to compete under flags - But doubt I'll bother this year now, seeing its another Sporting event that is now behind a paywall rather than free to air.Given the difficulties of finding hosts these days, I'll be surprised if it exists for much longer.2

Looks like this "reduced" scale model is what they're going to be going for in the future , Ahmedabad in India will host the 2030 games and then we'll have to see where 2034 ends up , it just doesn't feel like it's had any kind of build up in a packed sporting summer though.

It feels such a second rate event now. The best athletes aren't bothered, while many sports have been dropped to make it affordable.
It really needs a new host country, somewhere it's a big deal to host the games. But clearly most countries don't want to host, or can't afford it.0 -
Sandwiched between the Diamond League in London this weekend and the Europeans in Brum the week after it even feels like within athletics which is it's main event it's not really going to have the big names.killerandflash said:It feels such a second rate event now. Maybe this smaller model will make it more attractive to host because I don't think it'll be back to the UK for a while.0 -

It's an antiquated concept, and The Commonwealth now isn't even the same thing it used to be, essentially it was the collective term for the British Empire but now any country can apply to join the commonwealth.

Awful timing for it to be just before the Birmingham Euros. Two domestic "non football" events in the same summer dilutes both, but especially the Commonwealth games.
Interesting that it's a standalone Euro Athletics, as the previous 2 had been a part multi-sport tournament. That multi event games didn't take off, I don't think any of them now attract much interest other than the Olympics.2 -

Saw a "Interesting" "comedy" skit about finding something in Scotland involving the Tardis, which involved decanting the King and Camilla at the stadium. They walked out like they were queuing for the dentist. It was very poor and low rent.0

Adam Ramsey Peaty had to settle for tearful bronzes in the 50 and 100 metre breaststrokes. I just wished he had a bit more grace.0 -
I think the swimming unfairly influences the medal table - and not just becasue the Aussies do well! If you're a basket player, boxer or netball player, you can only win one medal. But there are endless different swimming races and relays. Friend’s daughter, Issy Boffey, got through this evening to the 800m final on Friday running for Wales. Will be tough to get a medal but well done her. She is also competing for GB next month in the European Athletics Championship alongside Keely Hodgkinson, Jemma Reekie and Erin Wallace. She was very successful as a junior winning the European U18, U20 and U23 800m titles. She missed out on much of the 2024 season and therefore qualification for the Olympics squad due to a hamstring injury. She is now competing against the likes of Keely (2 years younger) in many championships, although she Is not competing in Glasgow, but she will have stiff competition on Friday as several of the runners have better PB times.1 -

Couldn't agree more. Channel 5's coverage of Le Tour was presented by someone who looked like she'd won a competition and could just as easily be doing the weather. Not helped by having no one to bounce off in the studio.Karim_myBagheri said:

Used to love the Commonwealth games, only slightly behind the Olympics. But now it seems to resemble just a posh school sports day. Without the support of senior athletes, and proper broadcasters, it may be time to knock it on the head.
