Apart from last year Grant has been playing for teams that have finished top half of the championship.
That to me feels like an improvement on what we have.20 -
Very happy with that, West Brom wanted to keep him which says a lot as well. And we know he can play in that hybrid role up front and drift wide. Also any previous ill feeling it's time to let go tbh, I was there at Huddersfield that day he simply just gave it back to our fans after he was getting pelters, no issue there, and we are basically a different club to the one he left. Just listened to the NJ quotes on Karlan Grant and I can’t recall ever hearing him talk so strongly on wanting to sign a player. He’s normally very dismissive when talking about players not contracted to us, so this suggests it’s likely to happen.8

However while it would be good to have it doesn’t really help us with the much more urgent problems of a willing but limited midfield and a lack of cutting edge up front.
I fully understand that we would look elsewhere for those solutions and not every signing is going to be exciting but we do run a risk of starting next season with the same system as last season with the same problems and no real answers.1 -

I know Grant missed close to half the season last year with a hamstring injury.
But from what I can see in the previous seasons to that he has played most games.

The same system as last season, with an actual alternative to TC, better depth on the left side of defence, plus an upgraded midfield is a big improvement on last season. Those are the answersthenewbie said:

Plenty of time to add more signings in other areas. One of our big problems in the last two seasons was that we were completely and totally reliant on pace and direct running from TC or we played stagnant football. We were much better in L1 when Small offered more width and we reverted to some pretty workmanlike football last season. If TC wasn’t at it that day then we had no pace to bring off the bench, or alternatively we started off with a one-paced team and brought him on after 60-odd minutes of struggle. Having Grant who can play across the front three positions will give us alternatives in terms of how we drive our attacking play. It’s something we’ve been crying out for since January 2025 and it’s a huge piece of the puzzle if we manage to complete the signingthenewbie said:

The upgraded midfield of *checks notes* the same players as last season minus Conor Coady. We urgently need improvements in that part of the squad2 -

Redmond was poor against a weak Gillingham side. Really hope we’re not wasting squad space on players like that.

I think he will be very cheap. We are probably looking for a winger that’s happy to mostly be a sub, good off the pitch, and we can use him when we want to swap to 4-2-3-1 occasionally. I think Redmond might be worth bringing in
Remember , at his best he was capped by England and commanded a £10 million transfer fee , so he would been good enough.
Just maybe having a full preseason might get him back to a level where he could make a decent contribution for us.3 -
If we manage all that I'd see it as progress over what we had, gradual evolution etc. The problem is going to be actually getting those CMs in particular, NJ seems to have a decent eye for a defender (probably as he was one) but getting CMs who have his required level of athleticism and ALSO better skill on the ball all on a bottom 3rd budget? Never thought I would post to defend Golfie, but you are being obtuse. Golfie clearly means that they do not trust Jones to have a free hand with buying players, not that they do not trust him generally. If so, I would agree with them.ShootersHillGuru said:
I’ve been as critical as anyone about the signing of Olaofe and Apter but to think the owners don’t trust Jones is plain crazy. He’s the man they’ve given a long extended contract to and in his relatively short time has kept us up. Got us promoted and kept us up. Redmond and Grant in for £0 in transfer fees improve us, and also provide experience and versatility. Both can play positions in either a four or five at the back system. They may not be week in week out starters but not everyone has to be. Our depth needs to be better and is with both deals.
These are the kinds of moves that free up money for more transfers that can focus on improving the ceiling of the squad. Good business, as long as they can both stay fit.19 -

I’m not even sure it’s that Nathan is better at identifying defenders. It’s just that good defenders are much cheaper than good midfielders and attackers. So on our budget we’ve been able to sign a lot of good defenders over the last few years but not so much midfielders and attackers because we don’t have the money to do sothenewbie said:
