So it is Grant then. I hope he has a very thick skin or is deaf. As to many Charlton fans do not forget and forgive. If he does not score in his first start they will be on him like a pack of wild dogs.
I will hope it works out well for us and him. Give him time to fit in the Jones way of play.

    Anyway,

Who are the four other signings alongside Grant to be?

only concern is he's a player that i see as heavily reliant on his pace but had a hamstring op in Jan and is now late 20's - all in all though, given rumours about our budget, we're going to have to gamble so a decent signing

You do realise a footballers peak age is considered to be 27-29? It’s not like we’ve picked up 32 Onel Hernandez

Not sure about Karlan Grant, left on pretty bad terms and whenever we have played him since you can tell there's a bit of animosity there.

Didn't work when Bonne came back. Grant is of course a better player by a mile, but still.

I have him in the same camp as Bonne, Lyle and Roger Johnson.
In turn, useless, treacherous and useless. Grant has been none of those.

Good addition I’d say. Right age and has the level of Championship experience we desperately need. I’d think he’d have had other options and we must surely have matched the offer WBA made him, which is encouraging. Not the big target man Jones seems to favour so I wonder if we are still chasing Dykes or another up front. With Charlie out for possibly two months it’s a really important signing. Expect to see Kanu sold or loaned and I wonder if the big man role is finally going to be Miles.

Not sure about Redmond.  I might be incorrect in where he’s likely to play, but I always thought of him as an attacking midfielder and taking the game to opponents.  If we get him in, I feel like we’re not going to bother with anyone else and for me, along with more a pacey brick shithouse and rwbs, this is a key position

Carey and Knibbs I see as the goal scoring midfielders, but unless we get a pacey/attacking RWB, TC is still the only player we have that can take on players and run at them, plus Redmond.  We need stronger in this position imo
Knibbs is definitely not up to it and Carey was not second half of last season. I would rather neither were in the first 11.

He’s not got the physique he had last time he played for us. He’s filled out and matured into a different player. I doubt pace is his only strength these days. He’s played a lot of Championship football and will have learned and have other attributes now.

Anyway all the charges against KG were dropped weren't they?
They were but so were all the charges against Mason Greenwood and the whole internet saw the evidence there. You can't assume guilt but you can't really assume innocence either as those charges are very hard to prove.
Well if the internet says it it must be true. Innocent until proven guilty is the backbone of our legal system and of a society that has the rule of law, not the rule of rumour.

We have Kelman Leaburn Godden Kanu and Mbick if we want to play 1 up top and you can add TC Tanto and Grant if we want to play 2 up top.

I doubt we’re looking at any more strikers, a Right Winger a midfielder maybe a right back depending on asiimwe development surely the targets

Still think there might be another striker with Kanu and Tanto off. More of a big man than a presser like KG.

However if signing KG on a free means there's more budget to solve the midfield issues then I'm okay with it.

i'm quite pleased with the signing and yes, i agree he plays a different way now - he was somebody who played on the shoulder when he left us and that was when he was most highly sought after - his stock has dropped since then, he's adapted his game, become more of an all rounder and he's no longer lightning quick - if he was i doubt we would have been able to sign him unless the budget rumours are bollox

From what NJ said in his interview re this signing and potentially others I think Mwamba might feature more than we think this season. He has obviously impressed in pre season so far

The next two singings have to be attacking midfielders. It makes sense that these are the last ones as they’re the rarest commodities.

If he can stay fit, Karlan should prove a good signing. He’s got pedigree and is an upgrade on what we presently have. Every signing is a gamble but, given the ‘going rate’ for Championship strikers, to pick him up on a free is a result and should enable funds to be directed to strengthening the critical midfield area.

We’ve got a lot of front players on the books but, with the exception of Matty Godden, most of them are young and have limited (and, in some cases, no) experience at Championship level - Leaburn, Campbell, Kelman, Kanu and Mbick.

I see where you’re coming from. Mwamba has been eye catching this pre season.
However remain cautious because consistency is one of the challenges for young players coming through, especially in the new environment of the men’s first team.
I hope for a ratio something like three steps forward for every one step back.

We need a holding midfielder more than anything else. Right now we have Coventry and nothing and we really need an upgrade on Coventry. We need a mobile shield for the backline who can stop us getting run through while helping us progress the ball and then we need a box to box midfielder to upgrade on Docherty. We’re far more in need of structure and ball retention in the middle than an extra attacking midfielder

Exactly this. We won’t sign an attacking midfielder because we already have Carey, Knibbs and Fullah

Just need someone who can get about the pitch, win their duels, and pick a forward pass out

couldn't disagree more other than we need ball retention - we need ball retention but in a way that attacking , ball playing midfielders provide - our current ball retention is to win it and give it back to our defence - we need players who can move forward with the ball, take players on, play one two's etc, not think their job is done once the ball is safely laid back to Lloyd Jones.

I think people would do well to remember how he was treated when he came into the first team, yes he was blooded to early so Roland could fatten him up for sale but he, Morgan Fox and Nick Pope couldn't wait to get away.
  • Anyway,

Who are the four other signings alongside Grant to be?

Bored. So some random names to throw in the ring.  No knowledge on anything...

    Harrison Armstrong = Everton
    Tommy Setford = Arsenal
    George Henmings= Villa
    Kelly Nmae = Salford
    Kevin Carlos = Nice
    Stan Mills = Oxford
Kevin Carlos is an interesting one.
Along with your ‘Cawley is a Nice chap’ clue, I think you’re possibly ‘in the know’ about Carlos.

Sounds like we’re definitely looking at him.

We definitely need a midfielder who dictates the attacking play. The defensive aspects of the squad now look quite strong and the addition of Grant and who knows, possibly another front player should mean we offer more threat but unless we can link that defence to the attack with creativity it’ll make little difference and we’ll be a copy of last season. It’s 100% essential we sign a creative midfielder.

I think we both want the same thing but you’re misunderstanding what kind of player will provide control and progression. Right now the players we have in the middle struggle to progress the ball and, as you say, end up going backwards a lot. The solution to that isn’t to bypass on upgrading them to sign more attackers, that just means missing out the midfield entirely and if we do that we’d better get Gillesphey back for his diagonals. We need players in front of the defence who can take the ball off the defenders, send it out wide, play it among themselves to give the wingbacks time to move up or wingers to run off their markers, slow the game down or speed it up when needed and stop us getting run through down the middle like we do almost every game. Coventry is tidy on the ball but isn’t good at holding down the middle of the pitch. Coady gave us more structure in the middle but lacked the legs to get around the pitch as much as he needed to. We need a holding midfielder who can take the ball on the half turn and control the pace of a game while also being able to get across the space in front of the defence to support them when the opposition attack. We also need someone in place of Docherty who will help out his defence but can also drive on the ball and play a pass that brings others in to play and creates gaps for others to move into. These aren’t attacking midfielders but they allow the team to be far more attacking by unlocking space and allowing us to have more of the ball by making it hard for teams to run through us. Structure and shape dictate control of games, not just having the most attacking players
  • If you look at how the second half team played yesterday. They were combining and progressing up through the pitch with much more urgency and fluidity. That all started from Mwamba, he was brave enough to take the ball from backline and make a penetrative pass into the feet of our forwards or drive the ball forward. We should think about signing a player with those attributes as a starter and allow Mwamba to build up his minutes with the first team throughout the season! I think Mwamba is more than capable to make a good impact this season also…

This is NJ from latest substack '
You look at midfield and I’d like to bring another midfield player that gives us real control in a game. But you’ve seen the emergence of Alan Mwamba, which is wonderful. How you saw him play today (against Gillingham), he has been like that every single day in training. So that gives us an option.'

They are both priorities. We will definitely be looking for starters in both positions
