Equally, in the real world you have to listen to what the player wants. If he’s desperate for first team football, we can’t provide it and a team is willing to pay for his services then it’s sensible for everyone. Players are human beings and it does no harm to treat them as such especially after so much service. Now that it's confirmed I feel sad and I don't like it. Karoy seemed like exactly the kind of player we should be looking to develop, a physical and aggressive midfielder who just needed a bit of polishing around what he does on the ball. By all accounts he was very good on the ball as a youth player but the step up seemed to induce a level of panic on the ball that he hasn't been able to get round yet. The thing is though, once he does figure that out there's not really anything stopping him from becoming a very good player, I think it's a mistake to let him go so soon and I don't like what it seems to say about our pathway for players; you'll get chances as a youngster, but if you're not fully formed quick enough you'll be flogged to the highest bidder so we can get a nice functional violence merchant with a bit more experience and a lot less connection. Modern football eh. Let's hope whoever we bring in using this money justifies the sale6

Sad about this as there is a player in there somewhere and he will have a career at championship level in my view
But NJ said it was going to be ruthless and so it is, would expect Coventry and Doc could follow to free up some money for a real spend on the midfield1 -
A decent player but simply not good enough technically. While decision-making and game-reading can definitely improve with experience, I'm not sure that touch and ability to pick a pass will. We need better than Karoy if we are to push on

All the best to Karoy, a tremendous servant and a role model to all youngsters starting in our academy, he was with us from 8 years old and made it all the way to the first team! Not quite hit the heights expected and this move is best for all parties. No doubt he will forge a great career but the champ was a step too far for him last season. Good luck1

In fairness to all, I think another season of bench warming does Karoy no favours at all. He would not develop whilst that is the situation at Charlton. The Championship has become a monster and a youngster will not get enough game time due to the demands of this division, lot's of us thought that Zach Mitchell, Nathan Asiimwe and Karoy would become first team regulars by now, in division one, that may have been the case but not in this division. More to leave either on loans or permanents looks to be likely.SporadicAddick said:

It's hardly panicking is it? Jones has been here for two and a half years so has had ample time to assess him. Plus the statement says that Anderson wanted to play and we (rightly) cannot guarantee that.hudson-son-son said:Really feel this one will age terribly.

If we started the season with Anderson in our team then plenty of people would be on here moaning we haven't improved the squad.
I agree he still has potential and can develop, so in that regard i hope we've at least included a sell on clause.11 -

Good decision all round imo. If he does well and kicks on we probably have a % clause to collect. But most importantly it gives him the security to enjoy his football and not worry about stability.3

I adored Karoy but I think this is the best move for him. Every one else that started at Millwall in January was given a chance to turn things around and did so, Karoy never got the chance.
My favourite moment other than the goal at Derby away was the absolute battering ram moment seconds after he came on in the play off final, I celebrated it like a goal. Godspeed Karoy, hope to see you back at The Valley in future.8 -
He has moved because his ability has been recognised and he wants regular first team football.Even in a short playing window, we did drop Doc for him during the season and he wasn’t quite able to take full advantage of the chance.It gets overlooked because we lost, but his one‑two with TC against Derby was a excellent flowing move and a goal created by two of our academy lads in the Championship.3

The frustrating thing though is that it felt a bit like he needed a season of playing every week before we made this decision. He was in and out of the team in 24/25 and then wasn't consistent enough to nail down a place in The Championship but aged 21 a full season's loan might have been just what he needed to figure some stuff out. We wouldn't need to loan him out until his mid 20s, he could have his first ever season of playing every week and we could have then assessed him. He might still not have been at the level but it feels like we've jumped a bit early to generate cash for signings. That might work for us this season if we can bring in the right players as a result but it's not the best long term strategyScoham said:

We need to generate funds and this gives us a fee and frees up wages.
And Karoy himself seems to see it as a good move which I think says a lot about him as he's wiiling to drop down a divison and move away from home in order to play. All credit to him.
Maybe Blackpool will take Apter back too?7 -
He's a baby in senior football terms and I won't ever dig out a player with his attitude and desire and its those crucial attributes got him in the first team.
I think this move will be the making of him as a footballer. He can properly develop, nail down a starting place each week and assuming Albie is fit again the pair of them aren't a bad midfield certainly a good start to a diamond
I'm a bit sad we won't see him become the footballer I think he can become playing for us but think this is a good move for everyone right now10 -
Speaks volumes for Karoy that Blackpool were so keen to buy him. A great lad and I wish him every success9

He had the kind of energy that our midfield really lacked last season.
However his decision making was questionable and he lacked that bit of guile you need in the centre of the park.

There is always debate as to the style and quality of a footballer, and any critical view of Karoy has been within that almost technical conversation, like how Adigun and Anderson compared back in the day. However in essence nobody has a bad word to say about Karoy, quite rightly.
I am proud that he is another extremely decent product of our academy and like to think the ‘undisclosed’ fee would be enough to fund the whole academy structure for another year.
If (regrettably again) Kanu were to leave, the combined financial income were it to be seen as ‘academy money’ would justify academy costs.0 -
He will always be one of our own - a Charlton fan among all the glory-chasing Arsenal boys at Sparrows Lane (sorry, TC!).The first time I saw him playing in one of the youth matches on an online stream he stood out a mile - he had plenty of time and technical ability as well as tenacity. Those talents are still there and regular game time in League One will only enhance his speed of thought and ball control in the senior game.I’m very sad to see him go - though can understand the logic all round. I hope he goes on to be a storming success at Blackpool.8

He might get there in the next year, but by then we could be aiming higher again ourselves. He not only had to overtake players like Doc and Cov but (hopefully soon) new signings who should be even better, and young players like Mwamba who are getting closer.
Had we got relegated, I don’t think we’d be comfortable with Anderson being first choice. That’s the issue, he’s so close in some ways, but the gap to the Championship is huge, and we want to be comfortable in mid table in the next year or two, not continuing to battle in the bottom 6. Just being a bottom 6 Championship regular is a big step up from his current level.2 -
I've always liked Karoy, but this seems like a simple piece of business for where we are.
He might one day become a Championship-level midfielder. But we need players who are Championship-level midfielders now.

Good luck Karoy, always thought he had bags of potential and see him as someone who has all the tools to be a championship regular is he can put it all together, fear we may regret this one in a few years time when he's had experience playing regularly week in week out as a key man, which obviously we couldn't offer at this stage0

The difference with Parker was Scott had the skill on the ball but needed to find the fire in his belly which he did after the Norwich loan.
Anderson had the fire and is a good athlete but his ability on the ball was lacking and didn't seem to improve with games. Karoy could still find this missing ingredient to be a useful league 1 player and maybe higher but probably best for club and player that he moves on.
Folk who saw him play academy football said he was a good passer of the ball so maybe he can find the confidence to rekindle that but I never saw that in him in first team mens football.
