The 4 minute mile

I thought it was a decent estimate with some numbers, as others were discussing what was actually possible. Just a starter for 10 based on some reasonable estimates i thought.Leroy Ambrose said:
Good Lord this is misinformed 😂swords_alive said:A mile in 4 minutes equates to 15 miles in an hour, so 15mph. Not that fast really. Most fit adults can probably do a burst of 20mph easily and that would take a quarter off the 4 minutes, so 3 minutes should be in reach if people could realise that and apply themselves in a concerted way.0 -
There is no chance in hell that anyone is running an average pace of 20mph over a full mile.
If they are, they're going to be so pumped full of PEDs, they'll probably explode before they get to the finish line0 -
It's an obvious troll post, but the reason people are biting is because trolls usually confine themselves to the football discussion threads on CL.sam3110 said:There is no chance in hell that anyone is running an average pace of 20mph over a full mile.

@swords_alive I do find it amusing when you get a few nibbles on football posts, but may I respectfully ask out of etiquette you stick to them. Cheers!0 -
I would abide your request if it was a deliberate trolling. I'm just taking the perspective of breaking the component parts down and proposing an alternative view; distance, time, speed being the key variables. So, 20mph -> 3 minutes, if some so called professional athlete(s) would actually put the effort in on this basis I think one day it would be realisable.PaddyP17 said:

1/2 ounce of Golden Virginia and a packet of reds.Dippenhall said:As a 6 year old I many times broke the 4 minute record from Priory House to Brandon’s Newsagents and back again buying 1/2 ounce of Golden Virginia for my dad on the way. I ran like stink all the way and my dad’s watch always showed I broke 4 minutes proving I was as fast as Roger Bannister.Would be child abuse today.😁0 -
This would require the current metabolic rate of the human body to triple, to be able to sustain that speed for that length of time. Our muscle fibers aren't built for that level of compression and would simply tear apart before reaching a mile, and the amount of oxygen needed to sustain that level of running far exceeds the upper limit of current lung capacities and endurance.swords_alive said:

Unless we're splicing DNA with horses, no human is going to run a 3 minute mile0 -
"They", why they? If it's so blooming easy, why don't you do it?swords_alive said:
Just a mile though bob, not a marathon. But i like your example with Usain Bolt. If he was to pace himself and was willing then it would be interesting to see if he or some other professional could extend themselves to a mile. They really have't got to go that fast to easily take chunks off the current record.bobmunro said:swords_alive said:A mile in 4 minutes equates to 15 miles in an hour, so 15mph. Not that fast really. During this historic race, Bolt reached a top speed of 44.72 km/h (27.78 mph).So by your logic, Bolt could run a marathon in less than an hour. I'd love to see that, but I would consider it unlikely that Bolt rarely, if ever, ran more than 200m.I could probably run 25 yards in 5 seconds at my age now (69) - which would equate to a marathon in roughly two and a half hours. I can assure that aint happening!0 -
Why is their a record for 27 year old men? Are records kept for each age-level?guinnessaddick said:Scotland's Josh Kerr breaks 27 year old men's mile world record with time of three minutes 42.66 seconds ...
