At a point if you want progress there is a transformative moment though. You will have to make some players unhappy as you signing better higher paid replacements.ValleyLocal said:

Ivan in for c £500K (rumoured)
Billy in for c £500K (rumoured)
Grant in for free (obvs a signing on free, who knows maybe £500K?)
A Mitchell out for say £500K
Anderson out, who knows, maybe £3-400K?
Kanu to go, who knows, maybe £750K?
IF that is broadly accurate (and it's mainly guess work but can't see it being miles out) then apart from Collins, we won't have spent a penny so far this window.
Expecting big things in the next 2-3 weeks.
3 in. One from Scotland, one from Europe and Grant. Outside Grant I doubt wages are huge.
7 Out. Berry, Anderson, Gillesphy, Taylor, Dykes, Ahadme (loan), Z Mitchell (loan). Then Kanu and A Mitchell looking likely. Plus loanees Clarke and Coady returned to their clubs. Our wage bill right now will be significantly lower than the one we finished the season with.
Expecting big things in the next 2-3 weeks.
Say a decent Championship midfielder was available, why on earth would they choose Jonesball over going somewhere like Wrexham, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion etc?
That's the flip side of promotion to the Championship and trying to recruit decent & proven Championship players - other Championship teams will want them too.
If Mbappe became available at £6m, I am sure the Charlton board would think that's money well spent. The way some football fans think is 'well, we should push the boat out and sign him then'. Forgetting that every other single half decent club in world football would also be in for him at that price.
Have the board got the appetite to not only spend the £5-10m on a decent player at this level, but also match the wages the likes of Middlesbrough would offer and commit to a £4-5m contract?? Risking every other first teamer knocking on the door about a wage increase.
Even if yes, would that player come and play for Jones? As he'd be highly sort after.
Essentially, I think a lot of football fans are fantatists. It's the nature of the beast. You kind of have to be to put yourself through it, rather than just support Real Madrid. You would be phasing a lot of those players out as you seek to improve and grow3 -
Our next three signings are must-win17

Certainly Charlton are not as an attractive proposition as let’s say Middlesbrough or Norwich but we aren’t competing with every other club in The Championship for our targets. Yes there will be competition but not every other Championship club will need players in the positions we do and sometimes location and game time come into the equation. There are probably fourteen or more at least clubs that will be looking at much more costly players than we are. Charlton haven’t had a big sale recently that boosts the coffers and it’s going to take a few more seasons of building the strength of the squad to find that player that we can move on for big bucks. As for Jones’s Charlton not suiting every player. You’re possibly correct to an extent but I’d say that’s a very small and insignificant piece of the puzzle.ValleyLocal said:

I do agree with the sentiment that we need a new cm pairing. I think the defenders we’ve signed could go either way, like most signings of course. They might be great, they might not. They are unknown quantities but certainly the club are trying their best to compete by buying from abroad rather than tried and tested which will cost more money.0

Four days without a signing and we're back to "we're doomed".
Signings will come, they won't be as sexy or expensive as some other clubs, we may even have to wait until after the season starts for some of them, especially any premier league loans but they will happen.
As to whether they will be good enough to keep us up, well, we'll know in May 2027 not July 2026.40 -

We aren't fishing in the same pond as a Boro side that's got £30m+ in sales and Add-ons this summer already and just dropped £10m on Will Lankshear. We're in the same pond as the newly promoted 3 , Pompey and Blackburn in terms of fees.4

Why does it bother you Henners, thought you were an Orient supporter...😉Henry Irving said:Four days without a signing and we're back to "we're doomed".

West ham can cover loss and still spend after £153m for two players sold we are waiting for a few hundred grand.4

I’m sorry but this post is way to positive for this site , 3 week ban incoming.king addick said:We had a good start to the season which went tots up when we had no proper LB.
NJ is right. The base of the squad is good but needs some fine tuning. Tolaj could absolutely flop at Bristol as an example. We have signed 2 highly rated footballers and another with 200+ games in the championship so on paper, that isn't bad.
We would have been favourites to go down last year with Sheff Weds of course but we didn't!
See how things play out before we are written off completely.1 -
2 CMs needed, probably a striker and/or RW.
RB still needed. Probably one with more of an attacking profile.
Outside of that we really need to add quality loans. If we get that right it’ll really help us look towards mid table rather than the bottom 3.2 -

The right hand side signings are the ones that interest me the most. Whether it’s a wing back or winger will probably be a big pointer towards which system we will be playing this season4

If the player coming in is of high quality and worth those wages, they won't complain. Players know when someone is better and demands higher wages.ValleyLocal said:

Plonking a player on £30k in the team may cause a bit of disharmony, if everyone else is on half of that. Players are notorious for snipping about wages.3 -
Absolutely this. Both work hard, but if they’re in our starting XI regularly, it will be a long season.Chawlton said:The difference between fighting relegation or not will be whether cov and doc are our starting cms or a different pair. Can someone just make a rumour up0

I think Docherty will still start plenty of games. West Ham away second game for example is a game you want Docherty in. He was a big part of why we did so well last season in those types of games against the big teams and we will still need him to do thatWhat we need is players that can improve us in games where we won’t just be up against it all game with 30% possession. Home games against teams mid-table and below, away games against teams at the bottom. Costello was supposed to be that, maybe there’s a chance he might still become that, but that’s what we should be looking at to bring in3

Bookies odds are meaningless at this time of year, when much of the transfer business is yet to be done. Over 3 weeks to the first game, over 5 weeks to the end of the window.
Most club will be bringing in new players in, BUT also clubs will lose key players as well. Loan deals tend to happen late too, and some of those can be transformative. Back in 19/20, Conor Gallagher arrived on the 2nd August, and Cullen re-signed on the 7th August. A full season of Gallagher would have kept us up comfortably, he was that good.11 -
There’s another factor which often goes ignored and that is the effect of the manager or managers (sometimes up to 3 in silly season) on each club. I would take consistency and steady positive development over the knee jerk, trigger happy approach a lot of other clubs lean into. Oxford categorically suffered through poor second season signings and management last season. Southampton on the other hand were doomed until they sacked Will Still and replaced him with Eckhart.Point being you can have a great set of individual and expensive players, put them into the wrong management’s hands and it can be disastrous. We can expect at least one to three such examples. It will be very tough but genuinely think NJ’s nous combined with a bit more quality will see us a place or two higher this season.13
