  • I hope NJ is reading this forum, otherwise he won’t know the next three signings/new CM midfielders will be crucial on us being relegated or not.

Also, I reckon players consider how much money they will be paid and will they have to uproot the family when choosing their next team. The style of football will be a very distant third consideration.

Lankshear to Middlesbrough, 10m fee with a further 10m in potential add ons.
    Ridiculous amount
    Why?

He scored 10+ goals in a shit Oxford side. He’s only 21 years old and has potential to be worth 2-3x that.

It’s what you pay for top quality players in this league.
Tbh, I'm disappointed we've lost him.  He looks like a proper finisher from what I've seen of him.
But can't blame him for wanting first team football.  I'd rather us take a punt on him than persist with Richarlison but there you go.
Good we've got the 20% on potential future sale and matching bid rights

    Cheers gents.

I am of course referring to Stoke, Preston and Bristol City. Bang average sides that are pure gatekeeper teams in this league (respectfully, I wish we were them) and their spend on one player will probably match our budget this season and in some cases, last seasons.

Of course Boro don't fit that bill, but they're still in the same league as us, and they're spending big sums. Irrespective of if that was funded by player sales.

Bookies have us down as 2nd favourites to go down. On squad strength alone, I am struggling to identify 3 squads worse than ours with the exception of the newly promoted trio, two of which I expect to be almost on par with us before the season starts.

I just think it's going to be an extremely difficult season and 21st would be a hell of an achievement imo with our circumstances. (One of the lowest spending sides in the league with a lot of league 1 players still)

Joint third favs to go down. It goes Lincoln, Bolton and then us and Cardiff equal (Bet365).
They had us down to be relegated by Xmas last season look what happened not in the bottom 3 at all ….think Pompey and Blackburn will be below us as well … think second season is tougher then the first season cause your more known now .
They absolutely did not. Unlike you to make something up.

That was kind of my point tho.

All things being equal, eg wages & playing time, I don't think many players would choose Jones.

And it's a loop. If another Championship team finds out player X has been offered a contract at Charlton and they want him, I'd argue most Championship clubs could match our offer. So playing style and manager does play an important part in the decision.

As you say, it wouldn't if the board were offering more than most others could match. But that's not going to be the case.
Players that have worked with Jones are mostly very positive about him. What players actually do when it comes to decisions like these is they ask people they know who have worked with Jones to get a view, which if they are Luton or Charlton players will probably be a good view, if they are Southampton or Stoke maybe less so

Nope. Far from all of them, Ali and George on NTT20 had us 19th because of Nathan.

I think he works for some, especially the type of player he had to work with at Luton, ie lower league players with something to prove.

But I can't see a 23 year lad who has grown up in a PL academy warming to him. Only imo. And I am not saying that means Jones is a bad manager.

I am just trying to be realistic. I think it's a very difficult market for the board and Jones. And Grant is probably the best end of the player pool that they are able to fish in and land.

    Imo
He won the league with an academy.

A good (for both clubs) PL loan would be helpful. For a while we got decent loan players under Bowyer because of his playing background, and success with the likes of Cullen and Bielik. Gallagher would never have arrived without the success of those two in the promotion season.

Chambers is the only PL academy player we've had on loan under NJ, and he did OK without being a massive success, or showing major improvement. Dewsbury-Hall was a success for NJ at Luton, so it has happened before.

If you search for Dewsbury-Hall’s comments about Jones then I’d say you are probably wide of the mark here

Koumetio is also a 23 year old lad who grew up in a PL academy so the exact type of player you say wouldn’t warm to him has already signed for us this summer

Nope they didn't. People said we had the worst squad but had a manager and style that would maximise the current group of players so we would stay up. Most people are saying the same this year but the difference is Nathan Jones teams Luton be the prime example kick on to better things in he's second season.

No they didn't. We were 4th favourites to go down via the bookies (Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford and Hull ahead of us) and most Championship pundits and analysts thought we had a chance to survive and none said we were a sure thing to go down.

It's very different this season, as there aren't any teams with transfer embargos like Hull, or point deductions.

This is a far more difficult season to stay up.

I make them right. But still time to go before we bring in those top class midfielders for 4 million each. If we do I can see us finishing in a safe position. But we have a tough start.

Lincoln have lost their inspirational manager.
Cardiff have good youngsters, but aren't big spenders. They're only money is on their keeper, was on loan with them last season
Bolton were a mediocre side, who scraped up via the playoffs
Blackburn still have an awful owner.
Pompey will still be bottom 3rd of the table
West Brom and QPR won't be much better than they were last season etc

I'm on holiday at the moment and I really can't read the 1329 posts since I last looked at the Rumours Thread.

Apart from Grant in and Anderson out, is there anything else I have missed?
    Maybe

Yep. Whether or not we were bookies favourites for the chop last season. Two bald men arguing over a comb.

We've been linked with Alex Gilbey and TC is going to Peterborough on loan.

On the subject of Peterborough and that ridiculous rumour, I have noticed Peterboroughs player of the year Archie Collins hasn't joined anyone yet.

Really feel that would be a smart pick up. Pretty good on the ball, can pick a pass, plenty of league 1 experience and looks like he could play a level above potentially.

Not saying he would solve all our midfield problems, but think it would be a solid pick up on a free.
