Yes, defence is sorted now. It’s all about top end and ensuring we get the quality.roseandcrown said:If playing 4 at the back that is it sorted
RB - Ramsay & Danny
LB - Edwards & Ivan M
CB - Jones, Bell, Billy, Collins, Reece B & Gough.
NJ has said about 7 signings but I think we’ll end up bringing in another 4, making it 8.
Central midfielder
Right winger
Striker
The additional will likely either be another winger or another midfielder.
Therefore, I make it something like this…
GK: Kaminski, Mannion, Brooks
RB: Ramsay, McNamara
CB: Jones, Sichenje, Burke, Koumetio, Bell, Gough
LB: Edwards, Mesik
DM/CM/AM: New, Coventry, Docherty, Rakin-Costello, Knibbs, Carey, Fullah, Mwamba
RW/LW: New/Redmond, Apter, Campbell, Grant
ST: New, Godden, Kelman, Leaburn, Mbick
Players to leave: Asiimwe, Mitchell, Kanu, Tanto
Players to be assessed for potential loan: Gough, Fullah, Mwamba, Apter, Mbick6 -
Freebie with 150 Champ appearances is absolutely fine by me. Means we can now spend a good chunk of the budget where it needs to be properly spent in the middle of the park and assumedly out wide.fenaddick said:How much would people like us to have spent on our back up RB? Because if we’d spent loads and he sat on the bench there would be complaints then too

Agree for squad depth purposes, it's not a dreadful move but all summer Jones has banged on about bringing in quality as opposed to quantity this window and I can't say on paper the quality looks amazing, that's also our last 2 signings saying the move has happened very quickly which doesn't suggest these are long term targets (like Mesik who said he spoke to Jones last season at some point). Can only hope those quality signings the club have been pointing towards are the next ones in the door1
-
We need better quality in depth as well, we have a shallow squad, great first 11, falls apart as soon as one or two go as we found out last season. This is about increasing overall qualityYannTheMann said:Agree for squad depth purposes, it's not a dreadful move but all summer Jones has banged on about bringing in quality as opposed to quantity this window and I can't say on paper the quality looks amazing, that's also our last 2 signings saying the move has happened very quickly which doesn't suggest these are long term targets (like Mesik who said he spoke to Jones last season at some point). There’s no point sugar coating this anymore. There’s a strong possibility money is tight & I suspect loans will be drafted in to plug the gap with our creative problems. We need to attract new fans to the valley and players that get you off your seat is a must.27

I don't disagree with that sentiment at all, just think it goes at odds with how we're publicly communicating how the window is going/what to expect. If the next 4 are of a similar standard, think it's gonna be a tough old slog next seasonRothko said:

You're basing this on us having not made a multi million pound signing yet, with the season not starting for a number of weeks and the window open until end of August?18 -
Of course money is tight, hence the bottom 3 budget. It doesn’t mean that there isn’t a budget and we won’t spend cash!Berkshire1970 said:There’s no point sugar coating this anymore. last season we signed the best of L1 and not many made the step up. I have no issue in signing experienced championship players on frees if they improve us. I would rather sign grant on a free than fevrier for a fee11 -
There no such thing as a free .. you are committed to salary over number of years , signing on fee , agents fee all comes out the budget ..ProperCharlton said:
Or using our budget well and saving the money so we have more to spend on more important areas of the squad?Cafc451 said:Skint.0 -

We made an offer that would have broken our transfer recordBerkshire1970 said:There’s no point sugar coating this anymore. I really can’t comment on McNamara as I don’t recall ever seeing him play.My slight concern would be we’ve gone from Bree/Clarke at RB, two players who were largely very comfortable on the ball and drove forward, to Ramsay and McNamara, who both seem to be more defensive minded players. Kayne isn’t bad on the ball at all, but I always wish he’d drive forward with it more.Mesik and Edwards at LB doesn’t feel like a very attacking left side either. So it seems like we’re really going for tight at the back and then a bit more of an expansive midfield/attack. It all relies on us getting 2 quality ball playing midfielders in now.0

Oxford want £3m for Stan Mills. I still think he’s the perfect player for us, as would allow some flexibility between 4-2-3-1 and 3-5-2. I don’t think we can play 3-5-2 with McNamara or Ramsay at RWB as it’s just not enough attacking threat, and I’m sure the plan is still to switch to it at times this season. Mills is a great signing as a winger but he’s also played as an attacking wing back before so it’s the perfect fit for what we need from that signing15

We've signed two players in Grant and McNamara who are a decent age and have a combined close to 30,000 championship minutes between them for mid table championship teams.
In isolation I just do not see why anyone would have a problem with that.
Of course football is more nuanced than that, and looking at the wider picture we all know need more quality in forward areas to back this up. However Jones has gone on record multiple times saying we need this, and to get that quality, it takes more time.
All we can do is take that at face value, and then make a judgement once all our transfer business is concluded.

I don't see us signing another striker. We already have 5 main strikers & Grant can play there too (more of a striker than TC is).Sage said:

I'm just glad that we are signing our top targets that happen to be out of contract. What a steal.3 -
Would sign Mills every day to fill that RW role but have a bit of a concern we'll be blown out of the water on the overall package. Hopefully not because he fits everything we need.NabySarr said:Oxford want £3m for Stan Mills. I still think he’s the perfect player for us, as would allow some flexibility between 4-2-3-1 and 3-5-2. You're basing this on us having not made a multi million pound signing yet, with the season not starting for a number of weeks and the window open until end of August?Three weeks away from our first league match and a team that was desperate last season for creative players. Not necessarily spending millions but paying competitive wages to players ending their contracts. The next three players will be fundamental to our survival & you would imagine tactically you’d want them in asap.

If Redmond and Apter ended up being our right wing options, I’d hope we never ever play with wingers. We have to sign more than one centre midfielder as well.Sage said:

I agree. But your original post suggested that we need to no longer sugar coat the fact that we have no money?Berkshire1970 said:TheHerminator said:Berkshire1970 said:There’s no point sugar coating this anymore. I think the signings are proving to be tough to get doen, but for the right players the club will invest1 -

Go back & read the previous hundreds of posts & people are throwing out names they'd like us to sign like confetti....the vast majority under contract.
Then we sign 2 out of contract players that no-one has mentioned.
This thread should be renamed the hopefull & deluded signings.5 -
Passing it on as it’s a rumour although no idea on the likelihood but someone on FB is saying Aribo is close and Ramsay is off1
-
I think these signings so far have seemed shrewd rather than looking like we’re skint, I expect we’ll be spending in the later stages of the window12
-
I don’t even care if everything about it tells me it’s a bad idea. Get me Joe Aribo back6
-
I don't think it's at odds with what we've communicated at all: Jones has explicitly said that we're going after quality players who will take longer to land and will therefore sign later in the window .YannTheMann said:

Agree, expensive signings take time because there’s lots more negotiation to do. Kelman and Knibbs were expensive last season and came in relatively late in the daySheedyCAFC said:I think these signings so far have seemed shrewd rather than looking like we’re skint, I expect we’ll be spending in the later stages of the window3 -
Aribo just screams Harry Arter level bad idea.14
