    the play-off semi against Doncaster. Best atmosphere I've ever experienced at The Valley, will never forget it

    That is two weirdos on here! I remember snippets from my earlier matches at the Valley, but this is the first game that is cemented in my memory. The build up to the match even hoping I would get a glimpse of the great Bobby Charlton, my first decent sized attendance and like you, my first promotion.

    The other memory from this night was the absolute silence when Preston went one up, never experienced a silence like it at a football match following a goal before or since.

    And my dad let me have some time on the pitch after!

    So many memories from lifers, but as we’re coming up to the 50th anniversary Sept 24th 1976, The  6-2 victory over Southampton, was a special game, it was the match  my father and I often reminisced about.
    It was an all time classic night at the Valley with Killer bearing down on the covered end. Saints were FA holders…
    From this era 4-1 thrashing of Spurs was also some match…

    Hands down the best game ever, and I was at all the others mentioned apart from Huddersfield.

    The play off semi vs Ipswich. Possibly the bouncingest I've ever seen The Valley, great goal from Newts and I don't remember feeling the slightest bit nervous about the result. It seemed to me that it was our destiny to get promoted that year, and I think the rest of the stadium had the same feeling.

    Spurs 4-1 match was featured in a Panorama doc on Millwalls F-Troop who turned up that day causing trouble in the covered end …4mins 16 secs into the doc …

    this from an earlier Charlton life thread 

    “Vandalism: Damage, estimated at £12,000 was caused during and after the match, which led to arrests and subsequent fines and a terrace ban on Chelsea fans at away matches. Turnstiles were broken near the Valley Club, which had most of its windows smashed. After Charltons third goal, planks of wood were ripped from a stand to start bonfires on the terraces. One female Chelsea fan was so disgusted with the actions of so called Chelsea fans that she sent a £5 cheque to go towards the repairs”

    The 4-3 v Brighton was probably the most thrilling game, 2-0 up, 3-2 down, 3-3, then Colin Powell jinked through and hit the top corner, pandemonium. 

    The 4-1 v Spurs was good (the biggest 30,000 crowd in history LOL) but we were under the cosh for a lot of it....but the 4-0 v Chelsea was a great performance, totally thrashed them. 

    The atmosphere at the Ipswich, Donny and Wycombe off semis was something else as well.

    All of mine mentioned so an honourable mention for The 4-1 and 4-2 wins over forest in 98 (one league, one cup) we're both superb performances against the would be champions

    That was a cracker - on The Big Match too. Derby won the league, I think, and we narrowly missed out on promotion when only two teams went up.

    1963/4 v Cardiff City.

    Eddie Firmani's second home game since returning from Italy.

    Crowd given as 26,000+ although I suspect there were many more.

    Eddie was unplayable that day and left John Charles chasing shadows all afternoon.

    All 5 forwards scored.

    Happy, happy days.

    Most of the obvious ones have been mentioned. However, a couple more spring to mind:

    5-0 vs Southampton in our first ever Premier League match

    Bit of a left field one....2-2 vs Swindon in 2009 when Burton and Sodje were sent off and Llera scored a last gasp goal to level it.

    One of mine also, albeit I was only 14!
    Amazing to think that their Manager was Bobby Charlton and his assistant Nobby Stiles. 
    Doubt we'll ever see two World Cup winners on the opposition bench ever again.

    The palace 2-2 game was hilarious but the game stank

    For me it will always be one of the following 
    Beating Sheffield wednesday in the FA Cup third round 1996, nobody had a bad game, Sinton got Johnnie Humphrey sent off in the secind half too 
    Beating Millwall that same week I think 2 nil. We dominated them and Bowyer absolutely rose to the occasion 
    The chelsea boxing day game, both teams went at it, Di Canio was Di Canio and Parker was unstoppable 
    The Norwich 4-4 me and my dad left at 2-4 as much as I'd love to claim that one

    No that was the FA Cup game 68/69 against palarse at the Valley, I think they claimed 32000. I have never seen the Valley that packed (except in photos) I've always thought that there were nearer 50,000.
