He showed enough early promise to suggest he's worth sticking with. I don't know what system Bolton played but it was clear that with Charlton playing wing backs then he was not going to fit in the first eleven, because a wing back he aint. With the options that Nathan Jones now has at the back, a back four with McNamara as the right back would allow Apter to do what he is good at, attack, fingers crossed for him.TheHerminator said:

It’s amazing how people hang on to a handful of games as opposed to the evidence of the next nine months. As it happens, if we play 4 at the back he may stay as a reserve winger. That is probably above his level but we will not be able to sell him, so there you are.TheHerminator said:

Apter is gash. No motivation. I doubt he will play for Charlton again.killerandflash said:I'd be surprised, if we mainly play 433/4231 this season, if we didn't keep Apter around as an option to play in his natural position. We coughed up over £2m for him 12 months ago, that's too big an investment for a club like us to throw away.
If Apter is still struggling in January, then we might have to loan him out again, but I think he's worth keeping for the first half of the season.
This isn't based on a huge amount of evidence but I think a lot of Apter's game is dependent on relationships. He was great in that first month in part because he was linking up with Sonny Carey again. He then had to drop back a bit more to be more defensively solid and that wasn't his game. He found it harder to link up with Carey and his lack of minutes meant the relationships hadn't formed elsewhere. At Tranmere, most of his goals and assist came after January and the same pattern happened at Blackpool too.
The issue is that he doesn't have time to build those relationships on the pitch now. His minutes will be limited as I expect if he stays he'll be coming off the bench. I haven't given up on him yet as there's clearly quality in there but unlocking it is a tricky task0 -

Maybe, it's also possible he found it really hard living away from home for the first time. His younger brother move to the Cardiff academy last summer so you'd imagine his family were spending a lot of time supporting him. There's all manner of factors that could be going on, hopefully we can make things click if he sticks aroundBailey said:

My concern is that I’m not sure we would be prepared or able ? to meet the wages others would be able to offer. Ramsay and certainly his agent will know exactly that. It’s quite possible that come the summer Kayne could get offers twice or perhaps more than what’s on the table now from the club. Why would the player even entertain the prospect of re signing for us without exploring that possibility. Of course I hope he signs for us. He’d be an enormous loss but my gut tells me this is only going one way.Swisdom said:My thoughts on Ramsay are we’ve got six months to get him signed a contract or he’s off for free next summer and will start talking to clubs after Christmas0 -
The question with Ramsay, Jones and TC is whether the value we get from their sale outweighs the value we might gain from staying in the Championship because of their contributions. Losing three of our most sellable assets for free next summer wouldn't be a good look though2
-
I don’t mind having Apter as our 4th winger next season. TC, Grant, a new signing and Apter is fine for the championship if we get the new signing right
The problem is, will Apter be happy with that? I don’t think he reacted well to not being in the team last season, hopefully his failed loan has humbled him a bit and he’s willing to work hard as a squad player and earn his minutes

Perhaps, like Jones, he is waiting to see what our summer transfer window looks like. If he sees that we mean business then he might sign an extended contract. If all he sees is freebies & no ambition then he may well want to be offski next season.Swisdom said:My thoughts on Ramsay are we’ve got six months to get him signed a contract or he’s off for free next summer and will start talking to clubs after Christmas

We need to make a signing like Portsmouth did with Ebou Adams - he transformed their team from January last season. Hope we’re looking at (decent) cast offs from existing championship sides for a proven midfielder. I’d gladly put all our money into someone to take over our midfield!4

Think we're sleepwalking into a very tough season.
No midfield transfers yet when that was the area we were overrun time and time again?
The position that probably needs a good pre season to get up to match sharpness too.
Anderson and Berry both gone in that role too.17 -
Aribo was frozen out purely due to money at Soton, Nothing more nothing less. He had been told he could leave, he was supposed to leave then the move collapsed and he was frozen out. He was banished from the team, at which he lost form, confidence and match fitness, which is why he has struggled. I'd take him back, i think he offers something to us, at least my rose tinted glasses hope he doesCafcSCP said:I don’t get the anti Aribo stuff.
Hes had a bad spell at Southampton but was a regular in their previous promotion.
Knibbs will be like a new signing with a full preseason under his belt.
We’ve not really seen any where near enough of him yet.4 -
And we really need 2 not 1, starting CMs to come in.SELR_addicks said:Think we're sleepwalking into a very tough season.

Agreed. Confidence also clearly massive for him. If they can build that back up, let him focus on attacking without much in the way of defensive duties then no reason he can't affect games positivelyfenaddick said:

Or we’re actually after decent players in those positions who other clubs want and whose club want to keep. Therefore it takes longer to get them.SELR_addicks said:Think we're sleepwalking into a very tough season.

Anderson and Berry both gone in that role too.We know we don’t have £10m just to throw around on a player so that means we have to bide our time, find the right fit and get them when they’re available.
I don’t personally think anyone is under any illusions that it will be another tough season.16 -
It’s going to be very much a siege mentality type of season where we will need to massively overachieve. I am not too sure what everyone expects after the garbage we have been served up for the last 5/10 years.I for one am excited for this. It makes a change to a vile trip to Leyton Orient away!9

I didn't say a new XI - anyway, we're splitting hairs here - you're happy if we sign a midfielder and right winger whilst i and most others don't think that is anywhere near enough - let's see what happens and hope we are going to bring in more than the 2/3 that are left if Macnamara was one of the 3/4.sam3110 said:
But that's not going to happen, because again if you expect us to sign a new XI every summer, you're insane. Surely someone who claims to have so many mates in the industry and a direct line into the club would understand that more than most...DOUCHER said:
Not really what u said was it - a box to box midfielder and a right winger - the rest were ifs buts and maybes - we needed a major overhaul not a half hearted tart up of midfield a d attack and a load of new defenderssam3110 said:
We already have Grant, a probable upgrade on TC, I mention RW, ST and both midfield roles, the only one I haven't explicitly stated is CAM, where between Knibbs, Carey and Fullah we are pretty well off.DOUCHER said:

Nooooooo FFS not that one! Sign a better one!
"we need a right back"
alternate universe where we spend money on a right back
Noooooo FFS stop wasting our precious money on right backs, we need to spend money on wingers you fools!
The club can't win with some of you I swear to God.
As it stands we need a first choice right winger, a first choice box to box midfielder, and depending on if they believe Coventry will look better with a top midfielder next to him, either a replacement for him or genuine competition in the holding midfield role.
On top of that, it would just be if we can further improve positions, Tanto and Kanu out and a championship striker in, Apter out and a second right winger in, that kind of thing
We still have 3 weeks to get things in motion
I'm glad you're not the manager because if you had your way we'd probably have a player churn of 80% every year and be on a one way trip to admin0 -
I wonder if CAST will invite me to sit next to Cawley, Winter and Ransom on the 12th August…Italian_Addick said:

I can't believe Jones, and the whole coaching back room staff team, have not been able to identify we need improvements in midfield.11
-
I'm not "happy" with that, I want us to sign a first choice for right wing and for both central midfielders, and I think we need a better striker in the building than Dykes was, especially with Kanu and Tanto probably moving on.DOUCHER said:

I do however understand that you can't just sign 15 players every summer, and reckon Carey and possibly Coventry will be retained as first choice players, with the hope/aim of gradually increasing the squads ability level whilst staying sustainable and having a decent amount of ethos and continuity in the squad.
If we go into the first game of the season with Apter at right wing, Doc and Cov in the middle and McNamara at right back because Ramsay has been sold, then yes I'll be pissed off, but similarly if the front 6 reads "New CM, Coventry, New RW, Carey, Grant, Godden" then I won't be surprised, and won't be that annoyed2 -
There's no way we're sleepwalking anywhere. We all know it's going to be a tough season and we have a big hole in our midfield and I don't believe for a minute that Nathan Jones etc are sleeping on this at all. In fact, he's been directly quoted as saying he's fully aware of our MF deficiencies and working hard on it now. The thing is, we all want big, probably expensive players for those MF spots and those don't come quickly, cheaply or easily.SELR_addicks said:Think we're sleepwalking into a very tough season.
