Comments

  • Probably being sold
    Martinez coming in.
  • Obligatory goals and assists for Alli https://youtu.be/R-9wDR-6WHA
  • Rumour on FB that Alli is signing from Luton on Monday for £1.5 million.
The same amount Luton paid Exeter in January 2025, whilst Chapple was head of Luton’s scouting department.

Looks a lot more dynamic than Fev the fridge

Mannion sold, Kaminski understudy, new number 1… would be alright
That is the type of ruthless activity I thought we would see this summer. I.e the likes of Kaminski, Leaburn, Knibbs & Coventry etc replaced with better.

….& what we really should do if we want to kick on & progress.
This with absolute bells on. Alarms bells will be ringing if we sign Coady and Dykes.
Would speak volumes for our scouting network.

Listening to Cawley and Louis’ pod, Rich mentions Kamara is likely an end of the window move and Holsgrove might be too expensive for us but hasn’t ruled it out.
If we have to wait til the end of the window we will be 0 points from 5 with the current squad by then. It is mediocre at best just now.
We have pretty much the same players that started the season last year, we probably have a better squad now than we did last August against Watford. Don’t think we got 0 points then did we?
Where do you think our final position will be?

I like that he’s direct and attempts to beat his man, quick too. Should be a good option

The scouting network that identified and signed players from the Serbian league and Belgian league this year? The same scouting network that has linked us to a player in Portugal, another one in Japan, and some more across continental Europe in the past months?

It's a darn sight better than the years we could only sign ex Swindon players and people called Matt Smith.

As does the fact it looks like we are about to sign yet another player from Luton.

I’d say similar to last season but the signings we haven’t made yet could be season defining in either a good or a bad way so it’s too early to predict until we bring those in really

Fair comment, I was expecting different.

Like last season, we cannot be compared to most other teams in this league.

With respect to our squad, I would say only one (Lloyd) would be a starter for most sides in this league, some wouldn't even make the bench if not most of them.

We need players just to be able to stay competitive, other clubs in this league need players just to improve their chances of a promotion/play-off push. Relegation won't even be a consideration.

I am only concerned about the business Blackburn, Pompey, Lincoln, Bolton, Cardiff and maybe QPR do, not even going to consider the other teams to be near relegation with their squads and money.
  • Exactly, 83 signed by 24 clubs, which is less than 4 on average and we've signed 4.
Ok, not top quality but let's just wait and see.
And NJ already warned us that this window would be different to last year in that we’re willing to wait a bit longer to get our top targets if that’s what it takes.

Time will tell, but no reason to rush to judge anything until all our business is done.
  • Re Alli - Signed from Halifax - Most Exeter fans couldn’t believe it when Luton signed him for 1.5m off the back of a few good games. He’d cut in and score a worldie every so often and very exciting to watch -  other times he’d be completely missing. Heard Caldwell (city manager) described him as one of ‘least intelligent football players’ he’d managed. He did play well against us for Pompey but then again we were terrible and they turned up.

And that’s against some pretty tough competition. Sign him up.
  • Mannion moved house during the summer. That wouldn’t suggest that he wants to leave
Depends where the new house is

  • I did read a comment at the end of last month from a very well respected person in Charlton circles that they believed that the budget this summer was the same as 12 months ago.

As it stands we have not seen much evidence of that, however the time to scrutinise that comment will be at the end of the window (Start of September).

Fits what Nathan has said he wants with pace , directness and someone that can go 1v1. Really don't mind this as an option.

The inevitable is we’ve been bombed out on a few similar signings & there’s a possibility no other club wanted him. Portsmouth definitely weren’t interested. On top he fits the tight budget!

  • If we do sign Millenic Alli, I think there’s a player there.

His form dipped at Pompey, but John Mousinho said himself they basically ran him into the ground because they had no other fit options on the left. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

If we can rotate him properly with TC or Grant around the 60-minute mark, I think we’d get a much better version of Alli than Portsmouth did towards the end of last season.

  • Alli would be very underwhelming. Portsmouth fans don’t rate him, and scored once in 22 games last season. 1.5m, really?

We had the same problem with TC being our only real wide attacking option and the consequences of him being double marked and run ragged over a season.

In theory, with both Alli and TC (and Grant) we have the facility to rotate a bit and play either or both and hopefully deal with the issue of double marking. It also means that while one may be having an off day, hopefully the other is not.

Surely we’re well below what we spent last summer? Even accounting for higher wages.

I'd be surprised if including the brought forward Sichenje fee if we've spent more than £3m so far. Plenty of headroom compared to last summer's spending.

It’s  3.5.. that’s not including the increase in wages for  all the new players especially Grant compared to those going out , plus of course agent and signing in fees that all comes out the budget ….. if we sign the winger today expect that to be around 2 -2.5 mill …….but if we are serious contenders for the Scottish midfielder then that going to cost us appox 4.5 to 5 mill believe that’s his release clause plus big wages to beat a top German side to his signing .We all ready missed out on a player we offered appox 4.5 for to Swansea so the money there ..

  • Fleming’s comments yesterday indicate the 3-5-2 is very much still in the plans, think we will be switching between both systems. Alli has played wing back before so potentially could be an option as an attacking right wing back that plays as a winger in possession in the Thierry Small role? As well as being an option as a winger in a 4-2-3-1

Yeah agreed, it is natural to feel overwhelmed with this one. But how often over the last few years have the underwhelming signings been the diamonds in the rough.

Godden, Carey, Ramsay, Bell, Small & CBT spring to mind.

Albeit there was a fair few underwhelming signings which didn’t shine.

If true and we do have a similar budget, then they have used it in the exact way they should have done in saving as much money as possible for the midfield and right sided signings

Yeah but think, would you want to play at Fratton Park week in week out, with that fu*kin' bell ringing constantly and "play up Pompey" all match long...nah!!
