I was thinking Kirk, Ben Reeves, McGrandles… And so on.
I think it was mainly Karl Robinson who was bigging up Ben Reeves.

Charlie Kirk was indeed eagerly anticipated. Was he the biggest let-down in our club's history?

McGrandles has largely fulfilled expectations, just not with us.
Barry Endean will take some beating.
Are you referring to Barry Endean, "The Northern Scoring Machine"? Yes, he was hopeless, but not as aggravating as Kirk.

I think by the comments on here that Coventry is more marmite than mustard!

Personally, I  have been very disappointed with his performances. He works hard, but is such a negative player - too much sideways and backwards.

If Coventry has a couple of better midfielders around him, I can see him transforming into a top player.

Manchester City footballer Antoine Semenyo training at Dartford.

I can confirm he is not signing for them. 😂

Dobson is not what we need. He was not a creative midfield player.
Does Dobson walk into this midfield? Of course he does and therefore is what we need. Need a winner in midfield and someone creative, those two planks in midfield offer very little
Planks? really, they are two players that have been great for us and always give 100%. Some might think we need better to progress, but I don't think comments like that are right.

Coventry seems to have been turned into an awful plater in some fan's eyes. I think people have short memories he only started putting poorer performances when the team did and think he was playing through injury.  I would not bin him off yet.
I don't think anyone has called him awful. He is fine and pretty dependable, but everyone can see his limitations and that he's not that well-rounded as a player. Neither him nor Docherty were superstars in League One so we definitely need better at this level.

I think both Cov and Doc have plenty to offer and will play their parts in the coming season. They just don't work as a pair, hence desperately requiring upgrades on both so we never find ourselves in a situation where we're forced to play them together

A bit generous. He was hardly a standout player for us, even taking into account it's the sort of position where players aren't going to be that noticeable.

Just like Jones, Ramsay and TC, he has 1 year left of his contract, yet there has been little talk about the club trying to get him to sign a new deal or cashing in on him, as I don't think he'd be worth that much anyway.

Absolutely agree on Coventry, his stats as a defensive midfielder are excellent at this level, the problem being that Docherty doesn’t offer the creativity of play making ability we need alongside him and fans end up expecting Coventry to be able to provide that as well as his good defensive work.

I still think it’s unlikely that we sign a creative midfielder. We just need midfielders that are better on the ball so that our attacking players get it more often to create and score. Dobson would fit that and crucially is good without the ball

We just aren’t going to find a creative midfielder that is also good enough out of possession on our budget I don’t think
I don't think we'll be seeing a creative midfielder in the sense of someone who puts their foot on the ball and pings passes around - that wouldn't fit with Jonesball, even the 'improved' version.

If we got someone who can sit like Coventry but actually be a bit progressive with passing forwards I actually think we could away with Docherty as a water carrier/midfield nuisance type if we absolutely had to. But ideally both need upgrading.

This is where I am. Coventry plus someone to pass/carry the ball forwards instead of constant backwards/sideways/HOOF = fine.
Docherty with someone to bring wingers and forwards into the game so he can hassle and harry = fine.
Coventry and Docherty = winning the ball in midfield, doing nothing with it and passes back to the defenders to lump it long.

Id keep both happily as squad players but the midfield as a whole needs serious improving.

Mustard if you eat it straight off the knife maybe.  He’s an honest trier but we were better with an old , immobile centre back playing in midfield at the end of last season.

I didn't personally read that from his words and they're the same ones from the OS article annoucing Alli's arrival. The interesting bit for me was what Jackson said about Kanu

“Yeah, Dan is a player I like,” said Jackson. “I gave him his debut at Charlton and I have followed his career very closely. He is someone whose attributes I really like. We had a conversation with Charlton around that.

“They are aware we like him but he’s their player and it is their prerogative what they do on that front. I don’t really want to wade into that water too much. Dan is a great lad.”

Wonder if Mark Kinsella and Graham Stuart still have their boots...

We need a Claus Jensen type of player though.

Looking at playing a 5-0-5 formation in off the midfield entirely

Coventry is a tidy player, I’d rather offload doc than cov if I had to make a choice. Doc works his tits off but is limited with the ball, at times Coventry actually tried to make things happen last season, it just didn’t work out.

We currently play with two holding mids who aren’t progressive and an attacking mid who gets forward looking to score but doesn’t hold onto the call or create for others.  We need to upgrade two of them because we are too unbalanced.  We need a box to box no matter what. I am fine with either cov or Carey but not both.  That being said I have a feeling we are only bringing one central mid

OS has this “ we’ve got and we think in that forward area we’ve got different one-v-one threats with TC [Tyreece Campbell], Karlan [Grant] and Rob Apter and we feel we’ve just added in that department.

"We’re still looking for even more quality but this, we feel, is a positive step in being able to evolve and be more potent.”

Substack title “CAFC boss still eyeing more attacking deals after swoop for Luton attacker” references the above quote from the OS.

Jones could be generally speaking of quality elsewhere rather than in attack.

Coventry is not the problem at all.  He breaks the play up and reads the game so well - he's more of a Semedo for that ability to get in the way if stuff.  But he is not in the slightest creative.

By all accounts we have tried hard with Holsgrove but it's unlikely however this is a positive because it shows we are looking at the known problem area, creativity, so I have faith we have a few other options up our sleeve.

4-2-3-1 effectively means a couplke of wingers (i wouldn't be against Kamara joining too)
2 defensive nudfielders (Coventry can be one if the other is more of a deep lying playmaker)
Then we have a few options for the striker and one-in behind  but can also rotate them a bit to keep defenders guessing.

Defensively I am fairly happy - with the exception of the goalkeeper - and so the remainder is about strength in depth so when inevitable injuries occur we have able deputies as opposed to a massive drop off in quality

No-one has said anything even remotely approaching that. I'd like us to improve on him but people saying a midfielder who was part of us staying up in the Championship last season isn't a 'plank' is hardly over-praising him. It should be possible to have conversations somewhere in the middle without someone throwing exaggeration like this in to try and kill the discussion.

We could have the best midfield in the league and would struggle to control the ball and the game.

There are no passing patterns, rotations or plans on how to progress the ball through the thirds. Its lump it long and hope, or get it to TC and hope.

Now Jones may say that he has to play like that because of the players he has, but he also signed those players so its not a great excuse.

This evolution requires both an improvement in midfield and an improvement in how we approach being in possession.

Coventry I think can step up and progress to a passing game, Doc cannot.

If it is only 2 more players to be signed, then they both have to be in midfield. If the plan is for just 1 midfield addition, then you have to seriously question the people making the decisions.

So, you're suggesting Charkton look for a £116m midfielder, then?

Bevsuse your implying that's what we should be looking for...

Agree our best player by long way .. but was concerned with how unfit he looked on Saturday .. I know he had a longer break hopefully that injury still not bothering him
