I'm not overwhelmed by the return of Dykes, but I'm not necessarily against it either.

I do worry though, that if we mainly play 4231/433 this season, we will have a number of surplus strikers, even if Tanto and Kanu leave. Can any of the other strikers (Miles, Godden, Kelman) play in the 10 role? Plus we have Mbick to return at some stage.

A deal to resign Lyndon Dykes is in advanced stages and appears to be pretty close baring any last minute silly business from agents

    We need to be ruthless.
    We are re-signing Dykes.
The two phrases don't go together for me.

So far spent a reported £2.5M and (if Dykes signs) will have got 3 freebies in.
Received probably something between £500K-£1M depending on what Mitchell's fee was. Kanu, Tanto, Assimwe and maybe Apter all still destined to leave.

Jones, Ramsay, TC and Coventry into the last years of their contracts, no talk on renewals.

It's been a poor transfer window for me so far. I live in hope it improves.

I still think we're holding back budget for January after spending virtually all of last seasons in the summer

I'm ok with Dykes if we can't do better, but the frustration of not being able to strengthen the priority midfield area is growing by the day.
I agree it will be concerning if it carries on. I also wonder if this is all signifier that NJ just wants our two holding midfielders to just feed the runners though. If you have Mesík and Ramsay as full backs with TC/Grant and Alli as wingers as well as Carey all running forward on the counter that's a lot for a defence to cover
It would seem to be an extremely risky strategy to not sign at least one creative central midfielder.

Well Jones is never going to sign a fully creative midfielder but he might sign a Cullen type who is better on the ball than what we have but also defensively solid. That's what we need, rather than an Alex Gilbert type who will flit in and out of games

Supposedly a really nice guy off the pitch. On the pitch he looks like what he is, a bad geezer and I don't mind that. He's a decent addition with a  lot of experience imho if he comes back.

That's alright then, I'll overlook his 1 in 6 goals record.
As mentioned in an earlier post he did a job in helping us stay up but we need better than this.

Leaburn, Kanu, oloafe are not championship standard and need to go.   Kelman is injured.  Godden is older and coming off an injury so this is a decent signing but I certainly hope he has been signed as a reserve and that we are actively looking for a starter

Who the midfielder is I think we're clutching our cash for who knows? Holsgrove, BDK, that kind of player makes the difference. I'd  love to see it happen and it's not all smoke and mirrors.

    Great plan.

Be in the bottom 3 at xmas & then try signing your top targets. 🙄

To me this shows a lack of ambition.

This coming season seems to be same old same old. Pass it around the back a then hoof it to the big guy up front.
I often make a mental note to ignore your posts (not because I think your wrong) as they depress me lol but this one has got me because I agree with you which is upsetting lol

having already booked an Airbnb for the weekend and planned the weekend around the Derby game I’m already regretting it and thinking I could have saved money and booked a European city break that weekend rather than watch hoofball

Stay in central Greenwich and you can imagine you are in Paris.

Given how the rest of the window has gone I’m not expecting this, or at least the quality we would need. Unless we’ve been skimping and saving to ensure we can get this through the door. The key is we need more than one

I don’t mind Dykes but I’m currently struggling to see what the game plan is with 5 wide forwards (potentially 6 w Kamara) and 6 strikers.

I think I’d be more open to the idea if we had actually fixed the midfield issue beforehand

We've signed two wingers, look like we're trying to integrate another back into the squad and are apparently trying to sign another one from Hull. Half the people moaning are also the ones who complain that we don't get the ball wide or put in enough crosses. Bringing Dykes in to make the most of the wingers both in terms of bringing them into the game more and giving them a target to aim for makes a lot of sense. It's funny how quickly the positive contributions he made are forgotten by the kinds of fans who weirdly think a recently promoted Championship side are too good for a player like that. I think you might be looking for a different club.
I'll eat my hat if Dykes (or Leaburn for that matter) score more than a handful of goals with their head.

    Edit.

    A handful  =  less than 6.

He’s essentially ripped up his tactic for the past few years to now completely change how we play. Hes recruited along those lines.
NJ gets paid to make these decision so let’s see where we are come November.

If targets are not being met the board will need to ruthless.

If we are in the bottom three by November Jones will be out of a job.  I fear that we will not be serving up the free flowing stuff seen by France.

There no shot it will be either of these. Both are in demand by better more established clubs than us who can pay more.

It’s a waste of time throwing names like this around as it will just lead to disappointment when/if a midfielder comes in.

I think re-signing Dykes is probably fine. We’re a limited side with him playing but I’m assuming we’re having Leaburn/Dykes and Godden/Kelman as the options depending who we’re playing. We’ll probably see a fair bit of the 352 still and makes sense also if you assume only 3/4 will be fit at any one time.

Agree with others that we’re very unbalanced if Tanto & Kanu stick around though.

It’s mainly underwhelming because we still haven’t signed any midfielders. Not convinced the squad is as good as the one we finished the season last year with yet.

It just can’t be a continuation of the latter part of last season. The run in was very poor bar the hull game.

We need to come out of traps quickly or I think the boards hand will be forced

They've been  mentioned by several posters as desirable for a while. St John's Hill has spoken about Holsgrove on more than one occasion. I agree with you though I'd be surprised if we got anywhere with either of them.

Is BDK really that good.  Haven’t seen him play that much and didn’t stand out to me when we played them.  Seems there is a lot of championship interest in 5-6 Oxford players.  If that much of their squad was so good, why were they so easily relegated

    LW TC/Grant/Olaofe
    ST Kelman/Godden/Kanu/Leaburn/Dykes/Mbick
    RW Alli/Apter

    ST Kelman/Godden/Kanu/Leaburn/Dykes/Mbick
    ST TC/Grant/Olaofe/Alli

whatever system you want to play whether it’s a 352 + 4231 there has to be some outgoings.

Olaofe Kanu have to go at a minimum, maybe even one of Leaburn and Mbick on loan to a L1 club as well

Six headed goals is quite a lot.

Dykes is not an exciting signing. However, Dykes is a better target man than Leaburn (i'm not sure what type of striker Leaburn is tbh) so on that basis, if Leaburn goes and we accept we need at least one target man in the squad, it's a decent upgrade.Put in the context of our desperation for midfield quality and ideally a marquee centre forward, (i know, i know, i'm dreaming but that is what we need) it's a bit pants - particularly as we've clearly been looking for something other than dykes and vice versa.

For reference, Wrexham scored 14 headed goals last season which was the most of any team in the division. If a striker can score 6 headed goals in a season they aren't playing in the Championship. Haaland only scored 3 last season!

3 goals.  When a striker has to resort to counting assists to make his numbers look good then you are on a slippery slope.

So we have two friendlies and our customary exit to lower league opposition to come before the real stuff starts, 3 games to bed in any new players and look like a team, our midfield is going to be a combination of what we had last season without Coady. Probably end up using mwamba like a lamb to the slaughter. We looked disjointed with these players last weekend and they were our regulars. I don’t believe for a second this is what NJ is happy with no matter what he says publicly, 5 players in so far, none of them an obvious proven upgrade. And don’t give me the amount of games  in the championship thing because JRC was that and look what’s happening there. We’ve not bought experienced champ players from other clubs,we’ve picked them up because they were free.
well thats cheered me right up

He’s a target man who got 3 assists directly from headers, two of which earned us 1-0 wins against Stoke and Sheffield United. Why wouldn’t you consider them?
