If Dykes comes in I wouldn't be against giving Leaburn a LG1 loan. Give him a full season in an attack minded team like Peterborough, Plymouth etc and see if he can get back his scoring touch.1
-
The clubs plan is sustainable progress, if we can improve our squad and league position a little each season without risking the financial stability of the club and spending tens of millions then I’m all for itDOUCHER said:So, my take is that unless we hit the jackpot by either obtaining a huge sponsorship deal or selling an academy product for a huge fee, we are stuck in a championship relegation battle for years - depressing really considering we had owners with zero interest in the early / mid eighties but seemed comfortable in the 2nd division. As others have said, there are ways round this if our rich owners want to take them.14 -
The interest in Dykes seems to be a surprise to some, but remember he was one of a few players we offered new contracts to back in May when the squad update was on the OS (Godden and Casey being the others).
He’s been a player NJ has wanted all summer, rather than being a back up if we don’t sign better.9 -
The thing that slightly concerns me about Dykes return is whether he actually wants to be here. He came in to make sure he was getting game time before the World Cup - at the first opportunity after, despite a contract offer being made he has looked elsewhere (completely entitled to). However when he couldn't get a deal elsewhere he comes back to us with his tail between his legs having missed out on our club pre-season.5

Would a season starting every week in league 1 and hopefully scoring a good amount of goals be better for Leaburn than another season in the championship? I’m not sure tbh I think it’s a tough question but if we’re signing Dykes I think that tells us Jones answermatt88 said:

I don’t want to see him sold just yet as I still think he has potential to offer something given a good run at it. His career to date has been very stop/start.
Leaburn was excellent around Christmas last year and I thought the Dykes signing prevented him having a decent run in the side in the second half of the season.
I know Leaburn divides opinion on here, but his profile is so unique for a striker of his size and technical ability that we really should be giving him every opportunity to thrive at this level IMO.0 -

I'm not advocating our owners spend more, but how come Stoke have spent so much this year? Not sold any players for large transfer fees in years and have a similar turnover to ours. Could be their owner selling the club to themselves and wiping £80m of debt, so they ended the year in "profit". There is always a way around the rules.SouthLincsAddick said:
Well said!elbiglad said:I am getting a bit bored of some of the negative and short sighted comments being posted on here. I don’t know what people were expecting.
I hate that we have so much squad turnover every year but we desperately needed reinforcements. The transition the club has gone through necessitates this overhaul. The depth wasn’t there and the loans ending meant we lost four or five starters. So it was clear a massive influx of players was needed.
Let’s say we needed to bring in a minimum of seven players. When you need this many and only have a budget of around £10m, then you have to be clever in how you spend your money. Really basic stuff. So, it makes sense to spend no money on a back up right back who has good champ experience. It makes sense to bring in a decent striking option for no money when you have decent depth there already and have assessed that other options are likely too expensive. It makes sense to concentrate your spending on positions of most serious need to to bring in extra quality where t matters when decent, cheaper options are available in other positions. This is just common-sense squad building.
It seems to me that some people didn’t understand what slow, sustainable and sensible growth meant. It never meant that if we stay in the Championship for one year we will then blow the league out the water. It won’t happen next summer either, by the way. As a side note, it’s also not how football finances work so it’s no good talking about how rich our owners are. At this moment in time, unless we sell someone for big money or agree a huge sponsorship deal with an American airline or streaming service, this is the only feasible way for us to improve.
Jones has made a rod for his own back (for some) with the ‘ruthless’ comments. When, in reality, he was most likely just talking about some of the business that needed to be done, not all. Letting a midfield prospect who is a hard worker and, by all accounts, amazing character that has been with the club since the age of 8 leave is quite ruthless. Letting a reliable squad option who scored the goal to promote the club leave is quite ruthless. The likely exit of a young academy striker who won League 2 player of the year is quite ruthless. Any additions in centre mid that move Coventry or Docherty down the pecking order should be considered ruthless. Why does signing a back up right back have to be judged by this metric? Who can name all of the Luke Young backups from the Curbishley years? It’s not an overly important position.I am not an ITK. But the signing of Alli for £1m shows, to me, that there is money to be spent. This was not necessarily a position of need and there are plenty of free agent wingers available. So to spend money on this player shows that firstly, they rate him, and secondly, it suggests there is money available for the right targets. It signals there is more to come.Jones is an outspoken man who finds it borderline impossible to bite his tongue. If there was no money or the board had let him down I think we’d have heard something, or picked up on a sly comment. It’s been quite the opposite. He has told fans to be patient. The season starts in just under three weeks and the window shuts in five. He has repeatedly said there is more to come and quality takes time.
We all want more in. We all want improved quality. I definitely don’t enjoy watching us hoof it up to Dykes. But the window isn’t done. They are implementing a formation change. Let’s just give things some time.
I think the negative posters don’t want to understand the financial situation we’re in. A small but vocal minority have always created a lot of noise mostly through wilful ignorance. Professional football people would wet themselves at some of the comments on here, it’s so far from reality. Remember, this is only a fans forum, none of us have any pro experience at coaching a football team or even understand the basics of football finance.
If the owners wanted to put more money in, they could find a way. I've seen it suggested that the recent change in the rules is a way to drive down players wages in the Championship. Which, considering the state of finances in the Championship, seems quite sensible.
particularly now they don't have to cover bob munro's enormous salary6 -
I see Mr/Mrs Unknown is back...🤷♂️6

I'd rather keep him around but can see the argument for giving him a season in L1 to play consistent football. He played his most league games ever last season but minutes wise it was the equivalent of 22 games which is half a season. Half his games came off the bench but he seems to me to be a player who takes a few minutes to get into a game. A loan to a top end L1 team like Oxford, Huddersfield or Luton could do him the world of good. It would also clear a pathway to minutes for Mbick once he returns from injuryNabySarr said:

Lovely little backheel/flick to set Fullah away which led to Carey having a big chance, and then a bit of skill on the breakaway from Leaburn himself in the second half. In a game very short of attacking quality from us, he produced 2 of the only bits of it7 -

There was only one 20 goal striker in the division last season and he was at Swansea. There were none in 24/25, two in 23/24 and three in 22/23 - and one of those just won the Premier League. It's getting harder and harder for teams to bring in top strikers, fees have gone insane and there's less focus on the goals all coming from centre forwards; a lot of the top 5 scorers in the past few seasons have been wingers or attacking midfielders. We are going to need goals to come from a lot of places but we won't be unique in thatPavoren007 said:Unless we and one from abroad that comes out of nowhere I just don’t think we will see a 20 goal a season striker any time soon playing for us in the Championship.I expect goals to be spread across Dykes (if he comes), Kelman, Godden, Leaburn, Alli, Grant, TC, Apter, Carey, Knibbs and some defender contributions. 3s, 4s, 5s to max 10. That will do us sufficient if it plays out that way.Concern I have is that we are not yet firing in that department this pre-season and feel we need a game or two where we hit a team for 3 or 4 to build a bit of confidence and shift the mindset. COYRs!11 -
I think we're overlooking the impact of a decent transfer fee from a sale. Wasn't the last decent fee we received really Karlan Grant back in 2019?I also wonder if part of the focus on our "evolution" is the board telling NJ that player trading has to be part of the model, or that he needs to find a way of getting those players into the team. Tanto, Apter and JRC represent close to £5m of investment, which is a lot of money for us (yes, not for Wolves, Boro, WH, etc), especially when two of those League One signings have been loaned straight back to that level.1

I appreciate this isn't the thread for this but I feel like I have to say that we've been potentially days away from losing the club within the last decade, as well as spending 7 out of 10 years in League One. I don't want to go through that again and would rather we don't take reckless risks in an all or nothing attempt to reach the promised land.DOUCHER said:So, my take is that unless we hit the jackpot by either obtaining a huge sponsorship deal or selling an academy product for a huge fee, we are stuck in a championship relegation battle for years - depressing really considering we had owners with zero interest in the early / mid eighties but seemed comfortable in the 2nd division. I like Dykes. And with the other signings I think there should be more positivity, we can’t think just because we have a second consecutive season in championship we will play teams off the park.Going wider and changing formation shows progression but again with less risk at the back. Progression is slow and I believe we will get those needed to improve the middle, but wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being a solid 3.
Don’t read too much into pre season either, our L goal is to stay up this season and would be happy with 20th again. We’re not rushing progress and we’re also not static, a lot of patience is needed.2 -

Most posters seem to only be looking at potential recruitment targets from a Plan A perspective, which is a bit short sighted given Nathan’s Plan A does tend to regularly get exposed. Also signing players like Dykes that give us a Plan B option as well shouldn’t be dismissed so quickly. TBF to the chaps north of the border I thought they missed a trick in not playing him in their next two games to give them more backbone and some attacking threat when they were under pressure so much1
