I am getting a bit bored of some of the negative and short sighted comments being posted on here. I don’t know what people were expecting.

I hate that we have so much squad turnover every year but we desperately needed reinforcements. The transition the club has gone through necessitates this overhaul. The depth wasn’t there and the loans ending meant we lost four or five starters. So it was clear a massive influx of players was needed.

Let’s say we needed to bring in a minimum of seven players. When you need this many and only have a budget of around £10m, then you have to be clever in how you spend your money. Really basic stuff. So, it makes sense to spend no money on a back up right back who has good champ experience. It makes sense to bring in a decent striking option for no money when you have decent depth there already and have assessed that other options are likely too expensive. It makes sense to concentrate your spending on positions of most serious need to to bring in extra quality where t matters when decent, cheaper options are available in other positions. This is just common-sense squad building.

It seems to me that some people didn’t understand what slow, sustainable and sensible growth meant. It never meant that if we stay in the Championship for one year we will then blow the league out the water. It won’t happen next summer either, by the way. As a side note, it’s also not how football finances work so it’s no good talking about how rich our owners are. At this moment in time, unless we sell someone for big money or agree a huge sponsorship deal with an American airline or streaming service, this is the only feasible way for us to improve.

Jones has made a rod for his own back (for some) with the ‘ruthless’ comments. When, in reality, he was most likely just talking about some of the business that needed to be done, not all. Letting a midfield prospect who is a hard worker and, by all accounts, amazing character that has been with the club since the age of 8 leave is quite ruthless. Letting a reliable squad option who scored the goal to promote the club leave is quite ruthless. The likely exit of a young academy striker who won League 2 player of the year is quite ruthless. Any additions in centre mid that move Coventry or Docherty down the pecking order should be considered ruthless. Why does signing a back up right back have to be judged by this metric? Who can name all of the Luke Young backups from the Curbishley years? It’s not an overly important position.

I am not an ITK. But the signing of Alli for £1m shows, to me, that there is money to be spent. This was not necessarily a position of need and there are plenty of free agent wingers available. So to spend money on this player shows that firstly, they rate him, and secondly, it suggests there is money available for the right targets. It signals there is more to come.

Jones is an outspoken man who finds it borderline impossible to bite his tongue. If there was no money or the board had let him down I think we’d have heard something, or picked up on a sly comment. It’s been quite the opposite. He has told fans to be patient. The season starts in just under three weeks and the window shuts in five. He has repeatedly said there is more to come and quality takes time.

We all want more in. We all want improved quality. I definitely don’t enjoy watching us hoof it up to Dykes. But the window isn’t done. They are implementing a formation change. Let’s just give things some time.

    Well said!

I think the negative posters don’t want to understand the financial situation we’re in. A small but vocal minority have always created a lot of noise mostly through wilful ignorance. Professional football people would wet themselves at some of the comments on here, it’s so far from reality. Remember, this is only a fans forum, none of us have any pro experience at coaching a football team or even understand the basics of football finance.
I'm not advocating our owners spend more, but how come Stoke have spent so much this year? Not sold any players for large transfer fees in years and have a similar turnover to ours. Could be their owner selling the club to themselves and wiping £80m of debt, so they ended the year in "profit". There is always a way around the rules.

If the owners wanted to put more money in, they could find a way. I've seen it suggested that the recent change in the rules is a way to drive down players wages in the Championship. Which, considering the state of finances in the Championship, seems quite sensible.

They are owned by Bet365 essentially who keep investing in equity stakes in the football club. It isn’t a sustainable model but it means short term they can spend big on players
Sorry, but no they aren't. They were demerged from Bet365 in 24/25, transferred to Stoke City Holdings, and their debts wiped. Which is why their have been able to spend as they have.

As I said, if the owners wanted to spend big they could find a way. I think @Doucher is bang on the money and, unless we have some incredible recruitment, consigned to circle the drain.
I don't believe the owners are here for the long run, they're here to just try and flip a profit at some stage, and it appears their strategy is to do the bare minimum in doing so, which to be fair so far has worked.

It was heavily hinted at one of those Addicks meetings that Roland still owning the club held us back from improving the matchday experience and our plan is essentially waiting for an old man to die and hope his son offers a better deal for the stadium. You then look at Birmingham City and Wrexham's owners (who combined have a lower networth than one of ours) yet they're willing to pump millions into the infrastructure of the club. (A billion in Birminghams case)

The plan will be to keep using the TV money and whatever else to keep us afloat until someone comes along to buy us.

I don't mind by the way, as the alternative for us was a lot worse, but no one can convince themselves they're doing everything in their power to make us a competitive championship side, it is the bare minimum to avoid relegation.
This doesn’t make sense. The money they’ve lost already means they won’t make a profit by selling us unless we make it into the premier league.

If the quick flip theory was correct they’d have sold us once we were promoted to the championship
Joshua Friedman alone has triple the networth of Birmingham and Wrexhams owners combined almost. It isn't going to swallow his cash like it did Sandgaard or any other multi-millionaire. He is a multi-billionaire.

There still wasn't much to flip as we still don't own our own ground. It's a hard sell selling a Championship club in debt, but someone eventually will come along and see the vision and that's what I believe they are waiting for. Time will tell.
The longer they wait the more they’ve lost. They are probably £50m down already at least, plus the £12m they bought the club for. Without the assets I don’t think anyone is paying £60m+ for us. And every season that ticks by that loss amount will be going up by at least £10-15m.

None of that makes sense with them looking to flip the club in the near future. Only reason they’d sell soon is if they’ve basically thought fuck this I don’t want to lose this much money every year and want out

So disappointing if we sign Dykes. I thought this summer was about ruthlessness and adding real quality. Where are our goals going to come from?
A suggestion that you think we can afford without risking a points deduction?

I feel like the people who moan about us "not scoring enough headers" are often the same ones who complain about the quality of our crosses, without seeing the irony.

Literally no one is complaining that we “don't score enough headers”

Any new rumours of incomings this week?
To summarise the last 100 posts, we are divided as fans on the potential signing of Dykes and how good he or Leaburn actually are. A couple of decent central midfielders signed would be nice. Don’t want to rely on last minute loans.

That £10-15m is split between the owners and, to Friedman, like losing a quid down the back of his sofa.

I don't buy the flip theory, I'm more inclined to it being a hobby. Which is great while they are interested.

I think a forward line of Leaburn/Dykes - target men, and Kelman/Godden - finishers, is sufficient

We haven’t got the budget for someone that will eclipse any of those 4, and other areas of the pitch need more attention

I know he’s dislocated his shoulder but I really rate Kelman and I think with better players around him, he will deliver consistently

Dykes is an experienced handful.  Between a rotation of him and Leaburn plus the two wide players (if we play 4-2-3-1), or Kelman/Godden/TC playing off one of them, I think we’ll have enough to get to a minimum of 18th at the end of the season, providing we get that central midfield sorted.  In an ideal world, we have better than Dykes/Leaburn, but we’re realistically looking at surviving again this season.  If we were trying to push for the playoffs I’d be underwhelmed by our front 4 if Dykes signs, but for what we need to achieve, it’s a sufficient front line

So, my take is that unless we hit the jackpot by either obtaining a huge sponsorship deal or selling an academy product for a huge fee, we are stuck in a championship relegation battle for years - depressing really considering we had owners with zero interest in the early / mid eighties but seemed comfortable in the 2nd division. As others have said, there are ways round this if our rich owners want to take them.
The clubs plan is sustainable progress, if we can improve our squad and league position a little each season without risking the financial stability of the club and spending tens of millions then I’m all for it
Agree, but the other side of that coin might be relegation.

NJ needs a little more help from the owners - not reckless spending, but a couple of key signings could make all the difference.

Think we’re all hoping that those funds have been directed on 1/2 midfielders.

Would’ve liked them in more than 3 weeks before our first game but I do accept that the market is crazy right now.

We might have one very rich owner but he is part of a consortium with many owners. I’m sure he can afford to increase our budget but if he owns 20%, it’s only reasonable that he covers 20%, why would he cover other owners funds/losses etc. If he wanted to increase budgets, he would need buy in from the other 80%

Dykes is a decent option to have and fits the profile that will work well and benefit from style. Not sure why we need 4 forwards that can lead the line. Why also have Campbell,Grant and Alli that can also play as second forward. We also got the shift Olaofe and Kanu. Not sure what we are going to do with Mbick. Seems overkill squad building wise.
Campbell, Grant and Alli I don’t see us playing through the middle even if they’re capable of doing so. Add in Apter and as things stand they will all play out wide it seems in 4-2-3-1 system. In that system we have Leaburn and Mbick (maybe Dykes to sign and one of the other two goes out on loan) playing as the target man.

Then in a 5-3-2/3-5-2 system we have Godden and Kelman to play the 2nd striker/poacher role.

Leaves Kanu and Olaofe to both leave.

Hopefully all our strikers playing to their strengths and nobody playing out of position.

One key area we need to improve on is set piece delivery. For a team lacking open play creativity, we have to be better with our corners and free kicks. Indeed Harry Clarke's long throws were our best set piece outlet, and we've lost that now.

Only reason they’d sell soon is if they’ve basically thought fuck this I don’t want to lose this much money every year and want out
Aren’t Liverpool owners trying to sell the club for £3.5 billion? Obviously we’d never reach the branding and reach of Liverpool but our owners must be thinking if we make it to the prem they could get at least 10% of that for the club. It makes zero sense to sell the club now whilst also funding million £ transfers.

Professional football people would wet themselves at some of the comments on here, it’s so far from reality. Remember, this is only a fans forum, none of us have any pro experience at coaching a football team or even understand the basics of football finance.

It is impossible for them to make a profit by flipping us unless we get promoted to the PL. The losses they’ve racked up already cannot be recouped even if we were a top half Championship club. The more likely reason is they’ve seen the Wrexham series and fancy a bit of that and are hiding the losses as tax write offs. Or, they actually believed the original crap from Charlie M that we could be a cost neutral asset. Either way, they are not prepared to just write off any more than the £12m ish they are losing currently. Be glad they are here as we could quite easily be saddled with more crooks or idiots like the last two sets of owners.

    …it’s happening, isn’t it?

  • Have Pompey lost their patience and found snapped up another winger now…

Portsmouth have signed forward Luke Brooke-Smith from New Zealand side Wellington Phoenix for an undisclosed fee.

The 18-year-old has agreed a four-year deal at Fratton Park.

"He's a quick, direct and aggressive winger, who is comfortable on both sides of the pitch and has a lot of experience of senior football for his age," said head coach John Mousinho, external.

Does that leave the door open for Kamara - or has his agent shot his load ?

I see what people are saying, but I just don't understand their plan then if you think they are here to stay. Have low risk windows and crawl along being a Championship side until when? As people have said themselves, you still lose money doing that.

I reckon they were advised wrong and are now just seeing it out until someone takes us off their hands. Just have to wait and see.

I also am glad, just said I don't mind, but it's why I am not expecting much from Charlton currently transfer wise. Sods law we have one of the richest owners in the league and it doesn't feel that way.

Pompey love these random Aussie/Kiwi signings so I wouldn't read too much into that meaning no more interest in Kamara

I think their plan is quite clear, it’s just not one that people like because it doesn’t involve us progressing very quickly.

Carter explained how we will slightly increase the budget each year and slowly build our way towards mid table. Once we are there we hope to overperform one year and then we are in the play offs. It’s a slow burner

It might not feel like it with transfer fees, but with wages we probably won’t be bottom 3 wage budget anymore next season and our budget will have gone up

So we are moving the needle slowly upwards, we’d all love it to be faster and it does feel like a bit of a gamble with our safety at the moment, but they will back Jones to deliver an overperformance because that is what he does

If the owners wanted to purely make money the would have been much better off just investing in Friedman's hedge fund or even a building society account.

Instead, they are losing money, around £10m to £13m, a season with no sign of that changing.

I think the more likely scenario is that they wanted some fun while having a possible pay day somewhere down the line.

It's like four or six of us on here buying a racehorse. It costs us, say, £5k a year but we can afford that. We go to races, enjoy the thrill of being an owner while sipping champagne but it's not going to bankrupt us. It's money we can afford to spend just as Josh Friedman can lose £3m pa

Sure, our horse might win a big race or go to stud and then we'd be quids in but it's not the whole plan.

I believe the owners agreed the amount to which they would subsidize the club each year ie their version of £5k a year, and are sticking to it.

We're not Wrexham or Birmingham, we have a completely different business model and funding streams regardless of how rich our owners are.

All the messaging, post Charlie, has been clear. Slow, steady growth and sustainability.  It's not sexy and it requires patience.

We can be happy with that or not but it looks nothing like a quick flip model, to my eyes anyway.

I like it Henners.  We’ve now transitioned from house buying analogies to horse buying analogies

    This, this and this again.

If we want to score more goals and be more potent, is this is not the way, no matter how many wingers we sign.

If Dykes signs as predicted, thats six new players in with 18 days to KO.  Injuries and future sales/purchases aside, how many do CL fans see as guaranteed starters?

What tactical changes have we seen apart from passing between four at the back rather than three before hoofing it? And this is against inferior opposition.
