I don’t think guaranteed starters is the metric to use. Guaranteed to play is better, quite often last season the subs coming on were actually the players that had more impact on the gameGisappointed said:If Dykes signs as predicted, thats six new players in with 18 days to KO. Injuries and future sales/purchases aside, how many do CL fans see as guaranteed starters?
What tactical changes have we seen apart from passing between four at the back rather than three before hoofing it? And this is against inferior opposition.
I think Dykes, Grant, Alli and Koumetio will definitely either start or come on in pretty much every game. Mesik probably will too, at least until we have Edwards fully fit
The only player that doesn’t really improve us is McNamara as he’s just backup to Ramsay. Every other signing improves our squad7 -
I think trying to see the logic in any football club owner's plan is a waste of time; you have to be out of your mind to own a football club. You will lose money, everyone will yell at you, you'll be ridiculed most of the time and the best you can hope for is to unexpectedly go up and sell the club, most likely for slightly less than what you've invested overall. It's a mug's game. For a more depressing comparison Barnsley's owners are worth £7 billion but are basically forcing the team to exist off free transfers and the occasional small fee in the hopes of sustainability. Why own a club that you could easily bankroll to at least the Championship with minimal effort and just lose money every year in L1 where it's not even enjoyable? Because football club owners are insane people.7

Jones has gone on record and said that the plan from the beginning is incremental increases to the budget and that the board have backed him with that.Braziliance said:
I see what people are saying, but I just don't understand their plan then if you think they are here to stay. Have low risk windows and crawl along being a Championship side until when? As people have said themselves, you still lose money doing that.SouthLincsAddick said:
It is impossible for them to make a profit by flipping us unless we get promoted to the PL. The losses they’ve racked up already cannot be recouped even if we were a top half Championship club. The more likely reason is they’ve seen the Wrexham series and fancy a bit of that and are hiding the losses as tax write offs. Or, they actually believed the original crap from Charlie M that we could be a cost neutral asset. Either way, they are not prepared to just write off any more than the £12m ish they are losing currently. Be glad they are here as we could quite easily be saddled with more crooks or idiots like the last two sets of owners.Braziliance said:
I don't believe the owners are here for the long run, they're here to just try and flip a profit at some stage, and it appears their strategy is to do the bare minimum in doing so, which to be fair so far has worked.mcgrandall said:
Sorry, but no they aren't. They were demerged from Bet365 in 24/25, transferred to Stoke City Holdings, and their debts wiped. Which is why their have been able to spend as they have.TheHerminator said:

I'm not advocating our owners spend more, but how come Stoke have spent so much this year? Not sold any players for large transfer fees in years and have a similar turnover to ours. Could be their owner selling the club to themselves and wiping £80m of debt, so they ended the year in "profit". There is always a way around the rules.SouthLincsAddick said:
Well said!elbiglad said:I am getting a bit bored of some of the negative and short sighted comments being posted on here. I don’t know what people were expecting.
I hate that we have so much squad turnover every year but we desperately needed reinforcements. The transition the club has gone through necessitates this overhaul. The depth wasn’t there and the loans ending meant we lost four or five starters. So it was clear a massive influx of players was needed.
Let’s say we needed to bring in a minimum of seven players. When you need this many and only have a budget of around £10m, then you have to be clever in how you spend your money. Really basic stuff. So, it makes sense to spend no money on a back up right back who has good champ experience. It makes sense to bring in a decent striking option for no money when you have decent depth there already and have assessed that other options are likely too expensive. It makes sense to concentrate your spending on positions of most serious need to to bring in extra quality where t matters when decent, cheaper options are available in other positions. This is just common-sense squad building.
It seems to me that some people didn’t understand what slow, sustainable and sensible growth meant. It never meant that if we stay in the Championship for one year we will then blow the league out the water. It won’t happen next summer either, by the way. As a side note, it’s also not how football finances work so it’s no good talking about how rich our owners are. At this moment in time, unless we sell someone for big money or agree a huge sponsorship deal with an American airline or streaming service, this is the only feasible way for us to improve.
Jones has made a rod for his own back (for some) with the ‘ruthless’ comments. When, in reality, he was most likely just talking about some of the business that needed to be done, not all. Letting a midfield prospect who is a hard worker and, by all accounts, amazing character that has been with the club since the age of 8 leave is quite ruthless. Letting a reliable squad option who scored the goal to promote the club leave is quite ruthless. The likely exit of a young academy striker who won League 2 player of the year is quite ruthless. Any additions in centre mid that move Coventry or Docherty down the pecking order should be considered ruthless. Why does signing a back up right back have to be judged by this metric? Who can name all of the Luke Young backups from the Curbishley years? It’s not an overly important position.I am not an ITK. But the signing of Alli for £1m shows, to me, that there is money to be spent. This was not necessarily a position of need and there are plenty of free agent wingers available. So to spend money on this player shows that firstly, they rate him, and secondly, it suggests there is money available for the right targets. It signals there is more to come.Jones is an outspoken man who finds it borderline impossible to bite his tongue. If there was no money or the board had let him down I think we’d have heard something, or picked up on a sly comment. It’s been quite the opposite. He has told fans to be patient. The season starts in just under three weeks and the window shuts in five. He has repeatedly said there is more to come and quality takes time.
We all want more in. We all want improved quality. I definitely don’t enjoy watching us hoof it up to Dykes. But the window isn’t done. They are implementing a formation change. Let’s just give things some time.
I think the negative posters don’t want to understand the financial situation we’re in. A small but vocal minority have always created a lot of noise mostly through wilful ignorance. Professional football people would wet themselves at some of the comments on here, it’s so far from reality. Remember, this is only a fans forum, none of us have any pro experience at coaching a football team or even understand the basics of football finance.
If the owners wanted to put more money in, they could find a way. I've seen it suggested that the recent change in the rules is a way to drive down players wages in the Championship. Which, considering the state of finances in the Championship, seems quite sensible.
As I said, if the owners wanted to spend big they could find a way. I think @Doucher is bang on the money and, unless we have some incredible recruitment, consigned to circle the drain.
It was heavily hinted at one of those Addicks meetings that Roland still owning the club held us back from improving the matchday experience and our plan is essentially waiting for an old man to die and hope his son offers a better deal for the stadium. You then look at Birmingham City and Wrexham's owners (who combined have a lower networth than one of ours) yet they're willing to pump millions into the infrastructure of the club. (A billion in Birminghams case)
The plan will be to keep using the TV money and whatever else to keep us afloat until someone comes along to buy us.
I don't mind by the way, as the alternative for us was a lot worse, but no one can convince themselves they're doing everything in their power to make us a competitive championship side, it is the bare minimum to avoid relegation.
I reckon they were advised wrong and are now just seeing it out until someone takes us off their hands. Just have to wait and see.
I also am glad, just said I don't mind, but it's why I am not expecting much from Charlton currently transfer wise. Sods law we have one of the richest owners in the league and it doesn't feel that way.
Some fans might think that’s not the right way to go about things. But just because they’re not chucking loads of money at it, does not mean they are/were looking to flip the club.

he's 2 years into his new 3 year deal and i can't see him having much transfer value atm so yes, i reckon a loan is the best move for all and it might just jolt him to a new levelfenaddick said:
I'd rather keep him around but can see the argument for giving him a season in L1 to play consistent football. He played his most league games ever last season but minutes wise it was the equivalent of 22 games which is half a season. Half his games came off the bench but he seems to me to be a player who takes a few minutes to get into a game. A loan to a top end L1 team like Oxford, Huddersfield or Luton could do him the world of good. It would also clear a pathway to minutes for Mbick once he returns from injuryNabySarr said:
Would a season starting every week in league 1 and hopefully scoring a good amount of goals be better for Leaburn than another season in the championship? I’m not sure tbh I think it’s a tough question but if we’re signing Dykes I think that tells us Jones answermatt88 said:
I was told a couple of weeks back that Leaburn would be made available for loan. It’s another reason I don’t like the Dykes signing as it just sets Miles’ development back even more.charente addick said:Maybe a League One loan is the answer for Leaburn. I think there would be plenty of takers and it would give him a good chance to regularly start, build confidence and score goals.
I don’t want to see him sold just yet as I still think he has potential to offer something given a good run at it. His career to date has been very stop/start.
Leaburn was excellent around Christmas last year and I thought the Dykes signing prevented him having a decent run in the side in the second half of the season.
I know Leaburn divides opinion on here, but his profile is so unique for a striker of his size and technical ability that we really should be giving him every opportunity to thrive at this level IMO.0 -
I can’t see a loan galvanising him. He’s just not the player he was in 2022-2023 and we have to get used to that. It’s still there in flashes but they are all to brief . That said, I’d rather have him and Kelman up top than Dykes1

i'm not asking to reach the promised land, just don't want to end up back in league 1 and / or spending the next 5 years in a relegation battleWalkingred said:
I appreciate this isn't the thread for this but I feel like I have to say that we've been potentially days away from losing the club within the last decade, as well as spending 7 out of 10 years in League One. I don't want to go through that again and would rather we don't take reckless risks in an all or nothing attempt to reach the promised land.DOUCHER said:So, my take is that unless we hit the jackpot by either obtaining a huge sponsorship deal or selling an academy product for a huge fee, we are stuck in a championship relegation battle for years - depressing really considering we had owners with zero interest in the early / mid eighties but seemed comfortable in the 2nd division. As others have said, there are ways round this if our rich owners want to take them.3 -
Dykes is a very decent target man - his ability to get his head on goal kicks and long punts and to bring others into play with either his head or his feet is his prime asset - his ability to score headers from crosses will be a bonus but i think its his hold up play that NJ is after. In theory, the goal scoring / poaching will come from Grant, Godden and Kelman. You could say taht adding Grant and Dykes to our front line, compared to last season's front line options is progress.SteveACS said:
My post was never a criticism of Dykes. I'm a fan. It was more that some on here think he's only good with his head. When he's actually very good with his feet, too.Covered_End_Lad said:
Last season we play with absolutely no attacking width for most games and very few crosses put into the box so difficult to criticise him for not scoring headers. The change in formation should mean we are getting balls into the box far more often from wide areas this season invariably giving him more chances to score with his head.SteveACS said:There's a lot of punters on here going on about Dykes aerial ability. Do you know how many headed goals he scored last season? Zero. All his goals were scored with his feet.
But at least 2 of his assists came from cushioned headers on ..
As in the 1-2 with Kelman, and finish, v Bristol City.4 -

And this is against inferior opposition.Disregarding match fitness, Grant, Alli and one of Mesik or Koumetio will almost certainly start. McNamara is probably more of a squad player, like he was at Millwall. If Dykes signs he'll likely start too, although I actually rate Kelman higher.
Another way of looking at it: with Dykes we will have brought in six players and seven have left. Which of the outgoing players would you honestly pick ahead of the incoming ones? Personally, I think the squad is stronger than it was last season.

It is impossible for them to make a profit by flipping us unless we get promoted to the PL. The losses they’ve racked up already cannot be recouped even if we were a top half Championship club. Or, they actually believed the original crap from Charlie M that we could be a cost neutral asset. I'm not advocating our owners spend more, but how come Stoke have spent so much this year? Not sold any players for large transfer fees in years and have a similar turnover to ours.
Sods law we have one of the richest owners in the league and it doesn't feel that way.Carter explained how we will slightly increase the budget each year and slowly build our way towards mid table. Once we are there we hope to overperform one year and then we are in the play offs. It’s a slow burner
It might not feel like it with transfer fees, but with wages we probably won’t be bottom 3 wage budget anymore next season and our budget will have gone upSo we are moving the needle slowly upwards, we’d all love it to be faster and it does feel like a bit of a gamble with our safety at the moment, but they will back Jones to deliver an overperformance because that is what he does1 -
Think the owners should be judged on how much they lose opposed rather than how much they’re willing to spend.Net worth to me is irrelevant because it’s not our money as long as they’re willing to lose roughly the same amount as other owners then I can’t complain. Whether people want to admit it or not we are a smaller fish in a large pond here and don’t generate nearly as much as others.I’d love to get to the prem but I’m not gonna start getting greedy after what we’ve been through 10 years prior to them coming in5

I get the logic mate, but NJ can only do so much, he’s going to need the help at some point. Look we still don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes hence the speculation, as much as we are trying to have patience I can completely understand why folks are getting a bit nervy.NabySarr said:

Then a Charlton Life street party.Except for one table, who still hate that we re-signed the Scotland fella.22 -
For our budget if we end up getting 2 quality midfielders and another quality RW winger and keep Ramsay Jones and TC think it would be a 10/10 window.Valley11 said:Dykes, Kamara, Holsgrove and De Keersmaecker.

So i make it that our squad size is currently at 30. Minus Gough, Fullah, Asimwe, Mbick and Mwamba and we are down to 25 as they are u21 and home grown. Assuming we will try to sell/loan Kanu and Olafe. That would be 23 squad players and would give us room for 2 more signings. One of which being Dykes you would assume. Not a lot of wriggle room.

Not sure we going to see another one or two for a couple of weeks now …as NJ said calmValleyofdreams said:Any new rumours of incomings this week?
To summarise the last 100 posts, we are divided as fans on the potential signing of Dykes and how good he or Leaburn actually are. A couple of decent central midfielders signed would be nice. Don’t want to rely on last minute loans.1 -
This season might be a long one and I can see the supporters having a short fuse with each other if things don’t go well . It seems that nearly every player is disliked by one fan or another and the new signings haven’t exactly inspired the fanbase.2

I am honestly surprised anyone is disappointed in the owners from this transfer window so far.IF we spend some money and get 2 improvements in midfield, as I think we will (just waiting for the right people), then this has been a very successful transfer window. With the new formation and more control in midfield, Kelman, TC, Dykes and Carey are all going to play much better football. With more possession and control of a game we can bring them into the game more with more opportunities to show their skill set. Most people get it but some still don’t, the owners simply cannot put 50 million into a team. We would have a massive points deduction. We are very limited in our year on year investments we can make.As per financial fair play owners can put in and extra £33 million over three years into the club. The maximum they can in a single year is £15 million. I would have guessed last year we spent almost £15 million, which means we have £18 million to spend over the next 2 years (happy for fact checking if I’m wrong). All in all we need to be smart, and as far as I can see the owners are offering as much backing as possible in new signings for the club. I am very pleased with the owners we have and for once I trust the process.I predict we will spend the bulk of our budget on the midfielders. This will hopefully change the team quite drastically, allowing us to play slightly nicer football. If we don’t, then I still don’t blame the owners but whoever is in charge of the transfers as this position is clearly the one that needs improving (as we read day in and out on this platform).7

Basically it comes down to if/when these midfielders actually arrive and who they are/what they can do. We get the right ones ro complement the likes of Alli, Grant etc and even Dykes as the focal point and we should be able to improve both the team and the football.Wijoh said:IF we spend some money and get 2 improvements in midfield, as I think we will (just waiting for the right people), then this has been a very successful transfer window. With the new formation and more control in midfield, Kelman, TC, Dykes and Carey are all going to play much better football. Get it wrong, or fall short of "getting them over the line" and we're stuck with a squad that cant play the new way but is arguably less effective at what we did last year too.
"The next xyz is crucial" is a CL joke/meme now but its actually true this time.3 -
Let's hope we get a proper update on where things are at after the Colchie game this eve1

I feel like it will just be the one central midfielder coming in.Unless the ‘7’ new signings figure is a working number which it may well be.Just feel like the buffer in that regard will go onto a Dykes and/or Kamara.0

CDM Coventry
CM JRC/Doc
CAM Carey/Knibbs

ST Kelman/Godden/Leaburn/Dykes

that currently gives us 26 senior players out of 25. We’d assume Olaofe is gone, but if we want to bring in another winger and midfielder it could be a bit trickier, which would surprise me if we prioritise dykes before the midfielder + winger unless some players are sold
