  • Hmm, Sam Silvera on a free isn't exactly pushing the boat out. He's also much more accustomed to playing on the left, not on the right

  • No way we have bid €2m.

Well known fact that we're skint and Jones is unhappy
And he stormed out of a meeting.
Still shocked he is here after that. The club is rudderless at the moment apparently.
  • Tanto, doc and Assimwe to go I reckon.

I would add Kanu to that small list. NJ was super smart in the wording I have read he used around Doc. Think latter will move on to be replaced by better on top of CM and RW already mentioned. No problems with Doc and his incredible workrate but impact is a bit limited 80% of the time.
I would prefer Costello to move rather than Doc. I am not convinced by him at all. Doc has limitations, but as we saw from the last few games of last season he does have qualities that make him a very decent squad player, particularly when trying to see out games.

Some more stats to add to that post is that Holsgrove makes the same amount of interceptions and more tackles per 90 than Coventry while giving away fewer fouls and winning a higher % of ground duels. He’s not a luxury player, he does the dirty work.

I’d say he needs legs next to him and that’s Doc not Coventry

The bloke on the other forum already claiming Kamara and Holsgrove are overrated before we’ve ever signed either of them.

Doesn’t it get boring being constantly negative no matter what the club does? Convinced he doesn’t actually support Charlton.
A few years ago, he was banging on about how we MUST SIGN Alex Davey, a centre-back on the books of Chelsea, as he was so talented and was better than anything we had. Thought I'd check on Mr Davey right now. Retired at 31 years of age. Never played higher than League One level. So I don't take much stock in his views on players really.
This has been outright denied, he never once mentioned him apparently and you’ve been called a “malicious liar”

    Dont worry, you aren’t.

So I have done a bit of chat gpt research re Holsgrove.  PArtly because people wanted it and partly because of my own curiosity.  From a STATISTICAL perspective i can tell you the following.  Note - I know Coventry and Holsgrove are not thew same type of player however the conclusion probably tells us what we need to know.  Bear with me

    Holsgrove versus Coventry

    RequirementHolsgroveCoventry
    Completed passes /9064.034.0
    Pass accuracy85.4%78.4%
    Accurate long balls /904.163.39
    Long-ball accuracy53.3%42.1%
    Chances created /901.680.49
    xA /900.170.06
    Assists71

Coventry is a functional holding midfielder who covers ground and recovers possession. He is not a deep-lying playmaker.

Holsgrove completed approximately 913 more league passes despite playing 83 fewer minutes. That is an enormous stylistic difference.

They may actually complement one another. Coventry could do the less glamorous defensive work while Holsgrove becomes the primary receiver and distributor.

I think the key thing here is we are looking to go to 4-2-3-1 so Holsgrove and Coventry would actually be a decent fit as a pairing.  I would also say Docherty is interchangeable with Coventry in this comparison and maybe Mwamba could be interchangeable with Holsgrove (admittedly a step down in quality at this point).

Cov and Doc do the dirty work and just give it to the creative one - that's what we were missing last year.  Back in the Semedo days he was the horse who ran and kicked people and just played it simple - that's Coventry and Doc next year IF we have that creative "quarterback" to give it to and make stuff happen.  That's how the engine room works.  That's the plan.

Holsgrove is also good on set piece delivery, something we badly lack.  And according to chat gpt - for players in the same sort of ability tier across europe mr Holsgrove is, actually, one of the very top for progressive passing and his accuracy is exceptionally high for a player who tries to be more creative rather than safe.

So my stance has changed, i've done some digging, decided he might be decent so that's 100% not going to happen now :-)

And while I mention it, I am not a fan of Costello either and just can't see where he fits in this setup.  He's not the water carrier, not the creative, and he runs like he's carrying a fridge on his back.  Very strange signing from day one for me
  • Keeping our powder dry infers that we've been biding our time waiting to make an offer. Any of our 'Sweaty' contingents linked with Holsgrove on social media?
Implies  (apologies if this is rude to point out)

    Hopefully 1 in before Saturday
    Any idea who mate ?
    Shhh!

If @21cws spills the beans, he'll never be an ITK again :)
The winger I mentioned weds potentially is a free  agent played over 20 times last year in champ

don’t know who the signing before Saturday is, haven’t been given a name
Sammy Silvera was mentioned earlier in the window , played 22 times for Boro
Another left sided right footed winger. Surely if we do get a winger he’s going to be left footed and right sided.

Jones comments made it sound like we have money to spend as well thought that would mean we would spend a decent fee on a winger

Looks to be a bit of a dead ball specialist as well.

Just like Terry Taylor was touted to be.

Doc isn't the most creative player on the ball that we have :)

But off the ball, he stops opponents playing ......closes down space, tackles and tracks back, denying opponents time on the ball.

Limited player, but with that engine, tenacity and reading of the game ...he can have a role to play, even if it's off the bench to close a game out.

Manager's dream player in the squad. You bet Curbs would have valued him.

It's fantasy land if people think every player should be like Messi.

You are describing a holding midfielder not a box to box midfielder who should be the passing link between the back line and front with an eye for opening up the channels. Messi is a forward and right winger. We are talking at cross purposes. If we are to improve we need a far more effective box to box midfielder.

The way I see it you want Holsgrove on the ball as much as possible, so he’s going to be the one picking it up from the centre backs. That’s Coventry’s job at the moment.

Docherty is much better than Coventry in the role next to that which will be a lot of running, pressing, duels- winning the ball and giving it to Holsgrove and then a bit of getting forward and to the edge of the box/into the box to score.

If we bring in Holsgrove then I think he and Docherty is a good mix for the midfield 2. Would be great if we could upgrade on Docherty too but maybe that’s one for January/next summer
  • Of course I could be completely wrong on silvera, I just did a look on transfermarkt and remembered he was mentioned on here
  • Bit more insight into what Holsgrove is like from an analyst
  • All of this means he’s surely not coming right?
  • Maybe the re-signing of Scotland International Dykes is slightly tactical in this sense too?
  • "Scrawny"

    Doesn't match the

    "Dominant"

That Jones used on Tuesday night

To be fair, that does look like a low-ball bid
Who goes in with their highest bid first?
    We did with Ahadme

Feel like Docherty's contribution at this level is getting a little overstated. He put on some battling performances last season but really he is not a defensive powerhouse and the stats back that up. He runs and he tries, but otherwise he generally struggles to impact a game and we all saw that for the majority of last season. I think NJ saying "We need a midfielder who can control a ball" was an unintended swipe at him. And his passing stats are amongst the worst in the entire league. He is in the lowest 3% of players in the league for successful passes per 90 minutes. (!) If he left us, fairly sure he wouldn't be staying in the Champ.

His most recent follows are 4 Instagram models, one from Portugal one from Barcelona ( absolutely stunning by the way ) one from Newcastle and one from Birmingham, then prior to that an independent professional football coach and Tom Hateley, ex reading player turned coach with the Scottish FA!

Welcome to the pray for Holsgrove club!

He’s also been playing in the Portuguese top flight, so we’d have had the chance tonight watch him against their top clubs, Benfica, Porto and Sporting.

I can see Mwamba taking the box to box role in time, he’s too mobile and energetic to limit to a pure holding role. He looks decent on the ball but his engine is a big strength. Holsgrove sounds like his range of passing is a big part of his game, something we badly need in that holding role in order for us to evolve.

On that subject Greg docherty still only follows New England revolution as far as MLS teams go and he’s also just followed the Charlton kit man and grounds keeper so I’d assume he’s not off
  • He sounds exactly what we need, which means i cant see us getting him

I think what we lose most when he’s not there isn’t reflected in the stats. He is vital to our defensive shape, he’s nearly always in the right position to block passing lanes but crucially he also directs the rest of the team to be in the right place. Anytime he didn’t play last season our defensive shape was so much worse and we were easier to play through. Out of possession he is very good, in possession he’s very poor

I think the control and dominate quotes are much more aimed at the position that gets on the ball most which is the Coventry role. That’s the position that should be running the game

Does Holsgrove count as ‘abroad’? 😊

I’m calling it now - Holsgrove is the new Scott Fraser.  One magical moment in a game and then a 3 week period of nothingness, followed by an injury.  And repeat
Don't forget the leaks that he cant settle, is homesick and cant stand Jones.
