I would add Kanu to that small list. NJ was super smart in the wording I have read he used around Doc. Think latter will move on to be replaced by better on top of CM and RW already mentioned. No problems with Doc and his incredible workrate but impact is a bit limited 80% of the time.
But off the ball, he stops opponents playing ......closes down space, tackles and tracks back, denying opponents time on the ball.
Limited player, but with that engine, tenacity and reading of the game ...he can have a role to play, even if it's off the bench to close a game out.

It is NJ that asks Doc to play the box to box role. Doc was generally a holding midfielder for his previous clubs.
The spurious comparison with Messi was just to point that some posters have unrealistic expectations of some of our players - and without realising they must play to the manager's instructions or they are out of the team.
Doc has limitations. Of course it would be ideal if we can sign a player who does what Doc does plus has creative ability in addition. As the team evolves, that goes without saying

Does he direct the team to be in the right place... I can remember numerous occasions last season, much to NJ's repeated frustration, where we dropped too deep and let the opposition score from the edge of the box, and Docherty was at the heart of many of those incidents. Put him together with Holsgrove, and as we play out from a goal kick for example, the opposition will be free to stamp down on Holsgrove and let Docherty have the ball, which won't be a problem for them because the stats show he's one of the weakest players in-possession at this level.
If he starts a lot of games for us this season, I give it 5 matches before we are all really frustrated with him again.1 -

I don’t really see that build up scenario either, because we won’t be building up with Docherty next to Holsgrove, he will probably be more in line with Carey and only dropping in to help out if we really need an extra player
We will see what happens, but unless we are signing 2 midfielders (which would be great), I would imagine Docherty will play a similarly important role to the one he played last season0 -
