In reality I don’t think we can make any sensible judgement on how we’ll set up and perform this season until the seasons underway. I’m pretty sure yesterday wasn’t any indication of who Jones will start or even the formation. The only thing I’m clear on is that our midfield doesn’t have a playmaker and that for me is the deal breaker.15

Don’t think it’s the new players cause they will know no different it’s players like Ramsey and Jones who look totally different players in a 4 .. The powder dry comment from NJ is what’s keeping me positive, hopefully we’ve got some decent wedge and going to spend it soon. Guess it makes sense to wait a little to spend the money on “quality” if that’s what it takes rather than spending it early on players he doesn’t really want. Hope this is the case, if not, it’s going to be a slog7

My brother heard how many Charlton subscribers he had and worked out how much he would be left with once Substack took their cut and it was a tidy sum. I’d imagine more than enough to cover his previous salary, having worked in traditional media there is no way a newspaper was paying reporters that much. So yes, he currently earns enough to live on from covering Charlton.TheSE7 said:

Prior to the substack, Cawley had always released Charlton news for free. He never charged for it. He gets paid regardless because of his job and now gets more money because people choose to pay for it. This is fair enough as I say, but I just don’t agree. Was having a look at why Preston’s have gone so badly and came across this from one of their main accounts. I know ours hasn’t been incredible and we are absolutely desperate to fix this midfield and RW position out but it could always be worse14 -
Hopefully get that CM in and RW in this week so far the signs are not good I know it’s pre season but yesterday was very worrying we should be beating teams like reading pre season or not1

It’s my birthday today ( a big one mentally lol ) and I’m sitting here reading these threads still depressed from watching that dross yesterday and it really isn’t good for your mental health lol
the sensible balanced person in me has risen to the surface and I’m saying to myself that things for whatever reason haven’t gone as planned. The statements at the end of the season from the club re needing to get quality players in early so they can be ready for the new season hasn’t happened but that’s life. We might still sign some quality players but if we do they will need time to get up to speed so won’t be playing the first few games. It is what it is and nothing can be done about it now. So I have decided to stop worrying and just concentrate on looking forward too and counting down the days until Derby where I will be basking in the atmosphere of a full Valley hoping against any common sense that we put in a performance and get the points3 -

Think a particularly concerning thing about the two in (one cm one rw) is how much is then resting on that one cm. Not only to come in and boss it, but if he gets injured then we're straight back to Doc/Cov.
Hard to see how we don't need two into the middle, unless we really are putting everything on Mwamba immediately stepping up. We saw how difficult that was for Fullah last year, even with how good he is and with him having good moments.12 -

The two (?) midfield signings will define and hopefully bring everything together. Take one part out of an engine and it performs below par or even not at all. Add that part or in our case midfielder and things can work a whole lot better. We must get some quality players to make that midfield gel the other parts.7

If we get that midfielder in on Monday then things will look quite different but he'll need to be a hell of a player. He needs to be able to get the most out of whoever's playing alongside him because our current midfielders work very much in their own bubbles. It's our most important signing so I don't mind waiting to get it right but it really does have to be the right player8

I still find it hard to stomach that our players' player of the year in a promotion season, a guy who was a standout in the first third of last season, got an international callup and who then played through injury for the remainder, is now being described as literally not good enough for League One and markedly inferior to a kid who's never played a professional league match. Both Preston and Blackburn are in a much worse spot than us.
Switching to 4 at the back is a risk when Jones, Ramsay and Bell are custom made for 3 at the back. But you can understand why we need to change things to be more attacking to progress. Lets see, we won't end up with the perfect team, but another couple key signings could put us in a good spot.4 -
There's a few teams who must be feeling pretty worried at this point. Preston are all over the place and considering how badly they tailed off in the second half of the season that's particularly bad, Blackburn finished lower than us and have only made a loan from last season permanent and signed a player we weren't too bothered about getting back, Bolton's signings aren't really what you'd want as the Playoff team, Cardiff have signed a keeper and nothing, Lincoln have signed a centre back, loaned a keeper and brought in a free, QPR have got two keepers and two free full backs, even Sheff Utd have only picked up a teenager on loan and a 34 year old full back and West Brom look very light given how poor they were last season. All those teams I would have expected to be looking to strengthen a lot more than they have and they're miles behind us at this point. Still ages to go in the window but it's clearly hard recruiting this summer and I think a lot of teams aren't going to be ready for the start of the season. West Ham have spent their summer flogging player to try and stay afloat and have brought in a kid from Venezuela but nothing to go in their first team.Crispywood said:

Might not be the worst thing playing West Ham and Preston early before their deadline day trolley dashes.14 -

Also, surely we have given ourself the option to play both systems depending on the opposition? We played 5 at the back last season with Hernandez at WB, it’s not like it’s be impossible with Kayne and Rapter0
