Used to love the Commonwealth games, only slightly behind the Olympics. But now it seems to resemble just a posh school sports day. Without the support of senior athletes, and proper broadcasters, it may be time to knock it on the head.

There are still a lot of top Commonwealth athletes. It is just some UK ones because of the Europeans being 2 weeks away, which doesn't affect the others

Nine prominent athletes withdrew from the England athletics squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The notable dropouts included Olympic medallists Katarina Johnson-Thompson (injury) and Dina Asher-Smith, as well as Keely Hodgkinson, Daryll Neita, Amber Anning, and Matt Hudson-Smith.

Will be interesting to see the next generation replacements.
Friend’s daughter, Issy Boffey, got through this evening to the 800m final on Friday running for Wales. Will be tough to get a medal but well done her. She is also competing for GB next month in the European Athletics Championship alongside Keely Hodgkinson, Jemma Reekie and Erin Wallace. Really tough competition in this event nowadays.
Boffey has run decent times so has a good chance of a medal if she can keep her nerve
She got a little boxed in near the end of last night’s semi-final and also got spiked according to her dad, but came through.

She was very successful as a junior winning the European U18, U20 and U23 800m titles. She missed out on much of the 2024 season and therefore qualification for the Olympics squad due to a hamstring injury. She is now competing against the likes of Keely (2 years younger) in many championships, although she Is not competing in Glasgow, but she will have stiff competition on Friday as several of the runners have better PB times.
Let’s hope the spiking isn’t too bad. I believe she’s beaten Reekie before or given her a good race at least.

Good luck to her. I still think she is capable of a medal.

The coverage on TNT is very poor.
channel 5s highlights are abysmal which doesn't surprise me. all via TNT who have ruined the tour de france as well.
TNT could improve the TDF immensely by getting rid of that Orla Chennoui woman, never stops posing and talking.

So Issy Boffey came 5th in the 800m final on Friday night, although within 100m to go she was still in the mix for the bronze position. On Saturday afternoon she had a scan as she had felt her calf go during the race at around the 400m mark. The scan showed a grade 2 tear, so she will have to withdraw from the GB team for the European Champs in Birmingham (where she trains) which start on 10 August.

Having watched her athletics progress over recent years and her races all this year starting with the indoor events early in the year and traveling all over the states and Europe to achieve the times necessary to make both the Commonwealth and European championships, it makes you appreciate the work these athletes have to do. Having already missed the 2024 Olympics due to injury, am sure she will feel missing the Euros all the more. I think it is understandable that some athletes decided to priorities the Euros rather than the Commonwealth Games, as it is so easy to pick up injuries.

A shame she has to miss the Euros and the injury explains perhaps why she was outpaced in the last 100 or so in the Commonwealth final.

Good luck for her future and a quick recovery. I know from experience calves can be difficult
