I think some people haven’t paid attention to last season or the Championship in general without sounding rude. QPR and Preston finishing below us? I would be surprised.
Both have better squads, neither lost to us last season (Preston doing the double), Preston haven't been a league 1 side since 2015, QPR 2004, both way more established than us as Championship sides.
Fair enough saying Blackburn as it was touch and go for them, and of course the newly promoted teams, but people can't actually believe we are in a better position than any of the teams that finished above us?
It is very likely we are in a mini relegation battle with Blackburn, Lincoln, Bolton and maybe Cardiff. Actually improve the squad and that may change.12 -
It’s all about opinions mate. i I think it’s easy to get down about stuff but so far although not ideal I do think we have improved far more than most of the teams around usThe transfer that have so far occurred have shoehorned us into a formation that we’ve not played for 2 plus years on a regular occurrence. It will likely leave some players exposed due to lack of skill.5 -
Agree on QPR I think they’ll be fine but Preston definitely in with a shoutBraziliance said:I think some people haven’t paid attention to last season or the Championship in general without sounding rude. QPR and Preston finishing below us? I would be surprised.

I think Lincoln, Bolton and Blackburn I am quite confident we can finish above. Then there’s probably a group of teams that we will be in that could be down there Preston, Cardiff, pompey, plus I think Watford and Sheffield United don’t look strong and sometimes you get a surprise or 2 that’s down the bottom
At the moment I think we will end in a similar spot to last season, just staying up. But would say we’ve got a range of maybe 17th-22nd where I think we will end up somewhere in there1 -

We’ve been weak and limited in midfield for several seasons and we haven’t improved there . That’s the worry . Billy and Mesic might be amazing - I’d be shocked it they are hugely better than Bell and Chambers but let’s wait and see . Collins was here last year - looked talented but raw . Grant is likely an upgrade although recent stats don’t back that up. Considerable improvement seems unlikely to me .AndyG said:

I don’t think the signings are considerably better than what we had last season (hopefully that changes with the next couple), but we have got considerably better depth than we had last season. If we’d had as deep a squad last season as we do now then we’d have finished quite a bit higher than 19thwmcf123 said:

5-3-2. Keep it tight and try and nick a goal. I think 4-2-3-1 leaves us too open. One thing I will say is that it is not going to be pretty this season.7 -
So far
mesik looks an upgrade on chambers
billy looks an upgrade at CB
grant an upgrade in attack
if we can bring in an upgrade in central midfield and wide right then I would say we are definitely in a stronger position than last year39 -

Pretty uncalled for. Wasn't even a particularly controversial post (especially for RonnieDennisBooth said:
Shut up. It puts nothing in perspective, you are forgetting the squad they have at the moment. Plus the money they have spent strengthening the squad I would swap our position for Millwall’s any day of the week. Let’s wait and see what players are still to come in before predicting a relegation or an improvement on last season. At present I can’t see past more of what happened to us last season. A lot can change4
-
The start of last season saw us riding the Wembley promotion wave, we also kept considerably more clean sheets towards the start of the season than compared to the end of the season which helped us bank a lot of points early on.NabySarr said:

i I think it’s easy to get down about stuff but so far although not ideal I do think we have improved far more than most of the teams around usThis time there’s no Wembley wave and I’m not sure we’ll be keeping so many clean sheets. I think these losses and the better strength in depth will effectively cancel each other out and we might with another good addition or two yet still finish roughly where we did last season but with less highs and lows in form.3 -
I think we should sell Ramsay and/or Lloyd Jones if it means we can upgrade in midfield. We have cover for both and the money needed to get a seriously good midfield is probably outside our existing budget.3
-
Yes those are my thoughts exactly. We will be at a more consistent level across the whole season, but it won’t be a good level and we will end up around 18th-20th againMartinCAFC said:

There is no transfer fee budget, it’s all lumped in with wages, so every team has the ability to sign someone on a free but pay more in wages, some of the extra wages over the length of the contract will be more than a fee, so don’t get sniffy at a free. Fees are also spread over the duration of a contract so this year we’ll be paying off a third of quarter of last years transfers. Fees are not completely written off as some players will be sold and we’ll get a return. It’s a complex picture and I’d say impossible to work out as a fan.golfaddick said:Can't be arsed to read back 100's of pages so does anyone remember who we've spent money on this window ? Obviously any fee will be "undisclosed" but what do you think we've spent & how much of that have we recouped with players leaving.
Just wanted to work how much of the supposedly £10m-£12m budget we have left.
Cheers.1 -
It very often pans out that we see a team expected to struggle or be playoff contenders do the complete opposite. It’s a tough and relentless league4
-
All this talk of who will do what, who will challenge for promotion / relegation etc. Its worth noting that the team to be promoted from the Play-Offs last season, did so under a transfer embargo (?), and survived relegation the year before on Goal Difference.
But am sure we all had Hull down for promotion last pre-season
The year before, the Play-Offs included Coventry, Sunderland and Bristol City who the season before barely finished in the top half of the Championship at best.
Its not even the Championship, but the EFL as a whole, who predicted Bromley and Lincoln to win their respective Divisions?

Will help us considerably if Josh Edwards can play more than 8 games, or whatever it was, this season. Be like a new signing.
TC got absolutely screwed over last year because he was the least worst we've got in certain positions. Playing him at LWB weakened us there AND going forward, not because he's no good but because we didn't have a specialist to fill that role.
If he's played in the right position then there's an improvement right there. I wouldn't blame him for not hanging around, the amount of stick he got for trying to cover weakness elsewhere.12 -
