Aren’t you massively contradicting yourself there?Photollery said:If a player, any player, doesn’t want to re-sign, then as a business you need to cash in.
As previously mentioned on this thread, I’d maybe let Jones run his contract down if he didn’t re-sign.
We are all replaceable in life, doesn’t matter who you are.
Come September NJ will have a squad he will have to use, what will be will be. NJ will give it a go, most of the players will turn up and we will all be a year older.
Far too many on here are glass half empty 😂
Anyway, whether it’s better to let a player run down their contract or sell them with 12 months to go depends on a number of factors:
- how important is the player to us?
- is the player likely to be demotivated if they stay for the remaining year of their contract?
- how replaceable are they?
- how much do we get if we sell now?
- is the amount we get to sell now enough to bring in an adequate replacement or strengthen other more pressing areas of the team.
It’s not as simple as “if he’s got 12 months left and won’t sign a new deal then sell him”, especially for a regular first team starter like TC.0 -
Tc going would be a blow but if he doesn’t sign a new deal best to cash in now1

That's partially a reflection on how poor our attacking options were last season, rather than because TC was a lethal attacking weapon. When he's the only creative player in the side, obviously he is picked out by opposition fans.Bangkokaddick said:If the Preston Rumours thread is as accurate as ours then he'll be stating put.
However, despite what Charlton fans may think of TC, he is often picked out as the danger man by other teams and he is also praised by opposition fans after games when he's getting pelters on CL etc.
WIOTOS (Preston's that is!)
Which isn't to say I want to sell him, but with Grant and Alli arriving, we have way more depth now. The bigger question is perhaps the size of the fee...0 -
TC getting abused? People are having a laugh right? TC is way more supported at games than heckled, substantially more.
He has a chant (completely inaccurate btw, rarely scores) that gets sung at least twice a game. All the people that do have a go at him he probably can't hear in a packed stadium.
TC frustrates fans, but that happens at every club. We as a fan base generally give players an easy ride, it takes a lot for us to completely have a pop at someone.
Be annoyed if he goes, as I don't believe we can adequately replace him, but from his point of view the move might be at the right time. He plays in a team that nullifies his strengths, he may get more attacking freedom at Preston, then it's up to him to improve individually. I feel here he has too many defensive duties at times and has been overplayed.11 -
Something we need to do this season. Not so we can get by the play-offs,but just so we can stay up.AllHailTheHen said:For the 2026/27 season, EFL Championship Squad Cost Rules (SCR) limit spending on player and manager costs (wages, transfer fee amortisation, and agent fees) to 85% of total club income.Clubs also receive a flexible owner equity top-up allowance of up to £33 million over a three-year period (capped at £15 million in any single season) to boost spending capacity. Real-time monitoring throughout the season replaces the previous retroactive Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) assessments.
That's the new rules in a nutshell so you still have to spend within your means. Get the feeling the likes of Stoke are probably getting that £15m owner injection this season in a push for the playoffs.0 -
He is quite clearly our most abused player. Yes he gets support as well but he still gets more abuse than anyone else in our squad by some marginBraziliance said:TC getting abused? People are having a laugh right? TC is way more supported at games than heckled, substantially more.

Yeah he’s definitely aware of it as well, it can be very vocal at times, can see his head dropNabySarr said:

Might be controversial but I think he's already been replaced. Just need to get another RW in which isn't his position. We can't just let him run his contract down if he doesn't want to sign. I think he goes and does well there but I think it's the right time to move on.Braziliance said:TC getting abused? People are having a laugh right? Maybe don’t belittle people’s opinions by saying they’re not paying attention to the league if you don’t want to sound rude?Braziliance said:I think some people haven’t paid attention to last season or the Championship in general without sounding rude. QPR and Preston finishing below us? I would be surprised.
Both have better squads, neither lost to us last season (Preston doing the double), Preston haven't been a league 1 side since 2015, QPR 2004, both way more established than us as Championship sides.
Fair enough saying Blackburn as it was touch and go for them, and of course the newly promoted teams, but people can't actually believe we are in a better position than any of the teams that finished above us?
It is very likely we are in a mini relegation battle with Blackburn, Lincoln, Bolton and maybe Cardiff. Actually improve the squad and that may change.1 -
Selling him to a team that is in disarray and likely to be in a relegation battle with us is madness IMO.
Plus I think he has good potential and had a major impact in his first season of Championship football.5 -
“Most abused player” should be a new Opta stat. They could even measure expected abuse for missing easy chances etc.NabySarr said:

Genuinely don’t think I’ve ever heard Coventry get abuse at a game. Kaminski yes but still no where near the levels of TCAberystwythAddick said:

Not where I sit. Saw a lot of abuse. One time last season I can remember we conceded just before half time, and tbf TC was to blame but some one in front of me stood up and just POINTED at TC and held it there. Half time whistle went, TC was walking back, looked up and saw the guy pointing directly at him and his shoulders immediately went down and his head went down in shame, like a bullied child.Braziliance said:TC getting abused? i will say he’s one of our players who the crowd really has a massive impact on, when we’re supportive he can do great things, when we’re on his back he can really spiral. It doesn’t make that much sense to sell him imo unless he’s made clear he won’t sign a new contract.5 -
I'd be more miffed we missed out on Stan Mills.LargeAddick said:I didn’t think Campbell looked all that interested on Saturday but hard to tell really as that’s his demeanour most weeks. Wouldn’t bother me if he were to go.
To me TC didnt work on the right.1 -
Grant and Alli is fine on the left. New signing and Apter on the right. If selling TC gives us the funds to go and buy a Kamara or whoever our top target is on the right, then I think it’s the right move if he wasn’t willing to sign a new contractButtleJR said:

Think the owners would be more keen to sanction a TC sale than NJ would be but it makes sense to cash in, Grant & Alli can & will cover his goal/assist stats, but we could still use another player who can run & drive with the ball like TC for 45 games a season. I guess Apter could be that guy if we’re not writing him off but I think it’d be Abu Kamara (or a loanee)1

Would be sad to see TC leave, if he is to go. His potential, ability, pace, age and the fact he’s now played a season at this level makes him a really attractive player for other clubs which is exactly why NJ is so keen to keep him.
The fact is at the same time, if TC is unwilling to sign a new contract, because let’s be honest there would have been plenty of discussions and offers etc, then it would be bad business to let him run the contract down and risk things going for compensation in less than 12 months time.
He’s incredibly valuable in the current market and if he had 2 or 3 years left he’d go for close to 8 figures, I am absolutely certain of that.
Let’s just see what develops, if anything. But I am seemingly in the minority at times as I really like him and think when played on the left and with the support, because he’s been our only threat for the last 2 years, he can really be a great player. NJ knows it too, he can be what he wants to be and the amount of work NJ has put into TC, I think signing a new contract is the least he deserves back. But there loyalty in that respect isn’t particularly a thing anymore in football.
As said, let’s see what happens.12 -
I hope so. Grant although a lot older can play that role and providing he stays injury free, has a track record of doing the business at this level. He’s only 29 and there’s no reason we can’t get 2/3 good seasons out of him.ButtleJR said:

more on the right hand side, then still for me, the central midfield spots on the area that need the greatest amount of attention. If we lose TC but announce a dominant CM as has been mentioned, then the balance of the team will feel much better2 -
