    Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters are tackling a grass fire near Shrapnel Close in Woolwich.

    Around two hectares of grass and shrublands are alight. 

    The Brigade's Control Officers took the first of nearly 30 calls to the fire at 1127 and sent fire crews from East Greenwich, Eltham, Plumstead, Greenwich and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

    I saw a very large branch fall of a tree on Plumstead Common, where the path from Old Mill Road crosses the Common and joins the path opposite Macoma Terrace. So, the trees are in great distress from the heat and drought. Don’t park under them.

    Some trees are already losing their leaves. We desperately need some substantial rain.

    So I believe Oregon, the state I live in, has now set a record for the most amount of wildfires. And we're only at the start of August, whereas it usually gets really bad late in August. 

    The smoke came in this morning. Our winds shifted, and now the valley where I live is blanketed by smoke. It is keeping the temperatures down, but I have asthma that's smoke-induced so I can't really go outside much. AQI is *only* in the 150s, so could be a lot worse, but we have a whole week of this. It just sucks that in the middle of what is supposed to be the nice time of the year, we can't do much outside.* Obviously it's better this than in places like Spokane, where the wildfires are encroaching on the city. 

    *personally, I prefer fall and winter. I "winter well," which is an expression that I don't remember where I heard it but I love.

    The amount of building rubble dumped on Dartford Heath I am surprised anything could catch light.

    Remember when Swanscombe ( All retained) managed to strand a brand new appliance in a field trying to deal with a car fire.

    Field fires are always fun when the wind changes, the amount of times a fire engine can't withdraw in time and they need rescuing.

    Sunday we left the station at half nine in the morning, got back just before ten pm. Just one call after another, two fields alight in amongst the others, both caused by bonfires.  The second one and the last shout of the day nearly claimed two businesses and a house.  People really are self important idiots.

    Horrific pictures on Sky News of wildfires in Stourbridge. Homes on fire after it started on a golf course.

    I remember the LBF garage at what was the old Wadham Stringer roundabout and some of the stories were hilarious of the fireman's antics.
    One station officer, would openly talk about "Looting Tunics" and how everybody tried to get part time onto the London Salvage Corp.

    All politicians are idiots, I speak as a firefighter that can't believe it has taken this long for this announcement.  Even barmy Boris (or which Tory was in office) managed to do something similar in July 2022, this should have been announced when all the grass turned brown.

    Yeah me too as it goes…coming up to 6mths now,do feel at a loss tho,not being able to be in the thick of it & helping those who really need it…wish the brigade had a way of giving us retirees a choice & give us a chance,say a 3mth through year contract,we could be deployed to help out the surroundings brigades,that wouldn’t be scabbing by way (no way would I do that ever) just working besides the guys& girls with the shortfall in personnel till the government get there heads out of there arses & give the money to get back to the numbers that are needed to fulfill the ongoing crisis & future ones too…:so shortsighted…😩
