Painted Ladies (No not that sort!)

Any other butterfly lovers out there noticed the large numbers of them around this year after not seeing many foe a while.

In my garden down my allotment etc.

Great to see.

Also, plenty of Red Admirals, Peacocks and Commas.

    Yes, the upside of the bizarre weather is the butterflies. Hope it lasts.

    Funnily enough I normally get a lot of the above with a lot of meadow browns ,Holly blues and the ubiquitous cabbage whites but I am low ,disappointing so ,on peacocks,commas and painted ladies..not so many bumble bees either.Just outside battle, East Sussex

    Yep, I've seen as many Painted Ladies this year as I'd normally expect over a three year period. Holly Blues have been the other big gain for me - especially the second generation ones that we are seeing now. It's not all positives though. My Skipper count is down and I haven't seen  a Wall Brown or a Heath Fritillary all year (and I don't expect to now).  Both of the latter are supposed to be species that thrive in hot weather so I wonder if it's a problem with their preferred feeding plants - if they flower too early as a result of climate change and then die off before the butterflies are ready to lay their eggs, it could be very problematic.
