Another day without a new central midfielder
This is the frustrating part. Every day that goes by is one less day without our potential new player getting to gel with the team, and potentially less potential points without match sharpness. People can say it's dramatic but we stayed up by 6 points last season and a good start to the season can set the tone.

We have known our league status since April, 102 days ago. We have known long before that that the glaring issue is in the midfield. It's bloody amateur we haven't got one in by now (it should be two tbh). You're telling me a Championship level club can't find a better midfielder than what we have in that time period, ready to sign when the window opens?

If all our plans have been based around a player who we have allegedly underbid for, I'll be so disappointed.

People will say it's bed wetting, or dramatic etc, but it's not. It is the most important position we need and we should have had 10-20 names ready to approach, and if we don't, I question our scouting capabilities.

Derby County ten days away and as it stands, it's almost certain Conor Coventry or Greg Docherty will be starting for us, maybe even both. Not good enough imo.
    Big like.
Thought it was a Golfie post at first, the old, get someone in quick, doesn’t matter if their rubbish, just get them in early line, the same as it is every year.

Don't think the right approach is to have 20 names and move through them if they don't immediately sign. They obviously think there is a genuine prospect of signing the player(s) they are pursuing, and they are better than the ones much further down the list. Seems pretty sensible to me.
Exactly. Jones could have signed a midfielder on the 1st June if he’d wanted too, and probably on any day since then, but it won’t be as good as the midfielder we eventually bring in this month
So there is a midfielder somewhere better than we have( not difficult I suppose) that hasn’t been snapped up 10 days before the season starts waiting for us to swoop in?, more likely is that we are running out of options because we’ve tried to lowball every fucker.
It’s really not that hard to understand. If we want to sign a really good midfielder, that player will probably have had interest from
better teams. So they don’t sign for us in June/July, but instead of us signing someone worse we wait for the better player to realise we are his best option

They aren’t waiting for us to swoop in, we are waiting for them to accept we are the best move for them this summer
Very optimistic view I think, we shall see. Everyone knows we are desperate, we will be making do somewhere along the line, prepare to be underwhelmed.
  • The Bowyer years was our golden era for prem loans - Maatsen, Gallagher, Cullen, Bielik, and Millar all went on to play in the Prem and get lots of caps.
Gallen got a lot of heat for his last two windows, working of a shoe string.

Just look at the job he’s doing at now..

His record got worse when the Sandgaards starting interfering with recruitment. When he was left to his own devices he nearly always delivered

Nope, that was someone else who said player to be signed Monday from abroad not me.

    What about this one then?
Yeah was told medical was done Saturday. I’m not in charge of when announced. It’s no dramas I’ll go back to lurking and not passing anything I hear on. Enjoy

Really surprised Jacko went for Stockley, who's been an average L2 target man in recent years.

I assume he wanted his Christmas gravy recipe.

The other potential positive is that a player sees you haven’t abandoned him as an idea and likes that you’ve kept pursuing him. Sometimes you need to play up to players ego. None of that is as important as the money factor but it’s all part of the dance that is recruitment

He has zero money to spend there, I don't know how they have managed to keep hold of Seddon. If they get balls in the box he will get goals. If they don't and use him as a lone and isolated 9, he won't

I can understand the frustration, particularly given the season is just over a week away and I think the majority wouldn’t be happy to see Coventry and Docherty start if we’re going 4-2-3-1

However, 46 games is a long season.  We had a great start last year and it ultimately kept us up.  Yet we had some really poor patches and very bad finish to the season and it could’ve sent us down.

I’ve no reason not to believe Jones when he talks of keeping his powder dry and securing a dominant CM.  It might be that not having him until next week (as an example), will mean a slow start, but it could equally mean a stronger finish or purple patch elsewhere in the season.  For that reason, I think waiting until the deadline is the only way to judge the window

It's worth bearing in mind that the Dons have no proper strikers at the moment as Matty Stevens is out injured. The only other striker at the club is Hackford, who Jackson uses as an attacking midfielder, who is not a starter.

As talented an athlete as Michael Jordan is, he is unproven in football and perhaps getting too old. He does pass the height test though by some distance - so its a yes from me.

We could sign a better player by waiting though, who could be worth an extra 6 points over the season.

If we’d signed a right wing back early August instead of waiting for Bree we might have got relegated last season.

They are obviously trying to get one in as quickly as possible, it’s such an important signing I’m happy to wait to make sure it’s the best possible signing rather than rush one in now
216 days ago the club genuinely tried to move Greg Docherty to Wycombe but it fell through, I believe cause of an injury? So it's very safe to assume that at a minimum, Nathan Jones has probably wanted a new midfielder or even two, over 200 days ago.

Sorry, but that isn't good enough for me. I'll still go to the games as I can, support the team, etc, bla bla, but there is no hiding how amateur it is. Like I said, I would pay serious money to listen in on one of the meetings where they discuss players.

Not sure what you're trying to achieve here. Post is pretty clear, take it or leave it.
Of course Jones has wanted a new midfielder. I bet he could have signed plenty this summer though, but he’d rather wait for a midfielder that he really wants
I’d really like to believe this but I suspect we’re now in the waiting to see who is still available that we can realistically afford. I’m not saying that those players might not have been on a list drawn up of possibles but I think our prime targets have either gone or we’ve not got the money for. Hope I’m wrong.

It's just a shame Charlton only send transfer offers by fax machines still, if they used a more modern service they could have just offered an immediate improved counter offer when Estoril (allegedly) rejected our low ball offer. Then we could have wrapped this up weeks ago.

This is entirely my point. Teams and players drop their demands the later the window goes on because otherwise the move doesn’t happen. Players that weren’t available to us last month will be available this month

Just like with Bree last summer. There’s probably league 1 teams wanting Kanu that don’t have £1m but might get him later this month when we drop our demands. This is what happens in transfer windows and why there is so much late movement

He will give a central focus to their attacks, but was hardly prolific in L2. He will do a job for them, but smacks of Jacko going back to players he knows, when finances are tight

Random twitter account seemingly hinting a signing with photos of Michael Jordan. Probably rubbish, but Jordan Holsgrove maybe? 😂
Looking more like Katie Price tbh

This thread is mental, hundreds of pages not relating to rumours at all, about three people who actually know about rumours and god help them if what they've shared doesn't happen
    First transfer window here?

Wonder if Bristol City are still having Adebayo on trial? Seems unlikely. Would NJ want him? And how would he fit in the squad?

So you’re saying they could and should have had someone in earlier and it’s basically their fault they haven’t?

That’s what you’re implying by saying it’s not good enough right?
Not sure what you're trying to achieve here. Post is pretty clear, take it or leave it.
Of course Jones has wanted a new midfielder. I bet he could have signed plenty this summer though, but he’d rather wait for a midfielder that he really wants
I’d really like to believe this but I suspect we’re now in the waiting to see who is still available that we can realistically afford. I’m not saying that those players might not have been on a list drawn up of possibles but I think our prime targets have either gone or we’ve not got the money for. Hope I’m wrong.
I think we really do need to be prepared to be underwhelmed, if a midfielder is signed. I know I am.
Our midfield were almost redundant for much of last season as we huffed and puffed trying to score goals via hoofball, as it was the only way we could get up the pitch. We have strengthened the defence and made a couple of additions upfront for a relatively small outlay net of fees received for Gillesphey, Anderson and Mitchell. If we aren’t able or willing to pay the Championship market rate for a couple of decent midfielders (via outright purchase or loan), then I have no doubt we will again be in the relegation mix.
I really would like to be pleasantly surprised by whomever it turns out is the midfielder Jones really wants and whom he has been holding out for. But I’m not holding my breath.
