Happy enough with Chalobah as a squad/depth signing but if the expectation is that he transforms our midfield, then I'm worried. Very little about our summer business screams upgrades as was discussed.

NJ keeps talking about Grant, who's decent but he's not been top-level for some years, same with Chalobah and McNamara was a Millwall squad player. Alli I'm not having and who knows with the two defenders.

Unless the real quality is still to come in shape of this right winger and another CM then I'm really concerned.

We do have more depth and balance, but quality, I just don't see it, and I'm concerned about whether NJ can keep us solid with the change in shape, I can see us starting poorly and having to revert to 352 and being back with a squad not suited to it.

    I hope I'm wrong.
There’s absolutely no question that Chalobah upgrades our midfield. His fitness of course is the big question but assuming he’s fit he’s without doubt our best midfielder.

Reasonably pleased with the incomings so far and there is talk of another CM and RW which would be good.
However, the real ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM which has not been addressed yet is our need for A DECENT STRIKER now Kelman is out for a couple of months.
In my opinion with Dykes gone, Leaburn (not Championship standard), Godden (always injured), Mbick (untried at this level) , Kanu (untried at this level and probably being sold anyway) we are going to have a real problem scoring enough goals again this season.
This lack of a striker seems to have passed everyone unnoticed and I really hope NJ has something up his sleeve otherwise where are the goals going to come from.
I appreciate Grant is back but there is no way he is going to be able to do it all on his own.

But not Dykes! No, no, no, no. Donkey. Who's since signed for a side higher up the food chain.

Godden (always injured). Two seasons ago he was so injured he only scored 20 goals... One season he was out for, which he said is the only long term injury he's ever had. And from that he's gone to 'always injured'...

    Jesus Christ, I despair...
The comment about Godden was wide of the mark.  I think a good 50% of people on here think Dykes is a donkey

While I’m in a negative mood, I wonder what happens after a month of the season when Chalobah, Burke, Bell possibly Leaburn all get their inevitable injuries?, how’s the squad looking then? Doesn’t really smack of learning lessons of not shopping in the injury prone freebie market.
With any luck Leaburn wont be playing.
Last season was Leaburn’s first at championship level, first where he actually managed to stay fit and was given nothing to work with last season think he deserves another chance is only 22 as well.

If players like Knibbs and Kelman are allowed to be excused for a below par championship season can’t see why Leaburn can’t as well
Maybe I’m the only one seeing it, but whenever I’ve seen Leaburn play (albeit not much due to injuries), he’s looked a real handful for defenders to deal with. For his size he’s brilliant with his feet and we’ve seen in the past he knows where the goal is.
I definitely think it’s worth persevering with him. I still think there’s huge potential, especially as you say him still only being 22.
You're certainly not the only one seeing it. A 22yo 6'5/6'6 striker that wins most of his duals, no slouch over 50 meters, and has shown he's good with the ball at his feet - I don't know why so many people want to bin him off. If (and it's a big if) it clicks for him, there's a serious player there.

Not overly impressed with the Chalobah signing, not because he can't play but because I don't particularly want to watch another Charlton player who's ability to last more than twenty minutes is questionable to say the least. Maybe there was no other candidate out there who could fill that position, but if he and Burke make, collectively more than twenty appearances, I'll be shocked.

Unfair question, hardly anyone would have known our only reported target Holsgrove, it’s not our job to find better it’s the clubs, as of yet other than an injury prone freebie they haven’t achieved what’s needed.

He had to go, and we still need to move on a few more due to the 25 man squad limit.

The CM and RW signings will tell us a lot more about the budget. Hopefully we’ll be paying decent fees for both.

I know NJ is working with a tight budget because he’s said it, and the club have said this.

Dobbo has improved massively at Wrexham but we still need someone better on the ball with an eye for a pass IMO

Lincoln away last game of the season…
Olaofe on a one on one in the last minute and relegates us.
He then runs over to Jones and moons at him.

What if the budget that is available means they know the risks and the lessons learnt but they can't afford to do anything else? I mean, they're professionals, I'm sure they've considered this. They tried the players from L1 route and that wasn't a great success but then we couldn't even afford the best from L1.
I don't understand all this limited budget guff. Clubs can only spend 85% of their revenue , plus an additional £35m (over 3 years) of owners cash input. So a lot if clubs are capped by their revenue.

So is our revenue really in the bottom 3 or 4 - esp if you add in a further £10m+ per season of owners money. I thought our attendances were pretty good. I suppose it comes down to player sales - some of the lesser clubs must have really sold well over the past year or so.

Anyway.....I expect to get picked apart again & told I have no clue.

    Just call me Mr Idiot.
we have far too big a playing staff and it must be costing a fortune to keep them all for no proper return ..  we surely have a lot of players 'available for sale' but it seems few, if any of them are wanted by other clubs
    100%

A massive problem and a dent in our transfers coming in and money able to spend.

I can see us getting Holsgrove and then everyone moaning that he isn't the second coming of Zidane after four games... This is building up more than Andy Delort now

Sage has contacts and he is on the rise.

Let's just see how it pans out, there is no doubt that Burke and Chalobah are competent at this level and an asset to the squad, when fit.

Are we still recruiting using the rule of 8 certainties, 8 squad and 8 youth players, or whatever it was?
If so, can anyone put our current squad in the relevant boxes to see where we are short?
