    Funny how managers see players so differently. He has all the vision to run the show from deep, but never played there before under any previous manager. Credit to their manager for being brave and smart. One thing seeing it, another thing doing it and working.

    Offered something different to Doc and Coventry. Did a good job for us. Apparently not good enough to play in The Championship for us.

    We used him as an alternative to Berry though, and he did a job without standing out. In the summer I don’t think many said we should bring him back.

    Instead we signed Carey for that role, who so far has been our best signing. We have Knibbs and Fullah as options there too.

    Before last night, I don’t think anyone would have suggested signing Gilbert as competition for Coventry and Docherty.

    Is now without a club, made 22 appearances last year in a top 6 Championship side. Made a good impression when on loan with us in League 1 and aged only 24. Surely worth a punt?

    I liked him. I know lot don’t but he knows how to keep the ball better than anyone we have in midfield. Mildly creative too.

    I partly agree. Better than a couple of players in our first-team squad. I think he could be a good pick-up for some club, but he is not what we want right now and, as much discussed, we already have too many players, so no room for "punts".

    Definitely worth a punt. If we are now shopping in Scope for players we could do a lot worse than Alex Gilbert. Get it done!!!!

    He occupied a different spot, after we gave up on playing Doc in the advanced role early in the season he was competing with Berry for that spot mostly.

    Made 14 appearances for us in 1/2 a season. But different sort of midfielder. Gilbert is more attack minded than Doc or Coventry.

    Yes. That was not the right spot for him. He is a quarterback, hitting longish passes from deep. We have Chalobah to do that now and hopefully Holsgrove. Better passing and ball control than our mob, but does not contribute enough defensively for NJ to consider him.

    I'd have taken him last summer as a bit of a project and a punt as a newly promoted team. Our priorities haven't changed that much, I guess, in that we are primarily focused on just staying up, but I think we need to be progressing a bit too. He was fine, but, also, he hardly stood out in our League One team. We all seem to be fairly unanimous that the midfield that got us out of League One isn't the midfield that will see us progress in the Championship - I feel like we need whoever comes into that "playmaker" role to be a step up. Maybe that's unrealistic, but I think we need to be more ambitious on this signing than we maybe have been with some of our other deals this summer. Gilbert would feel like a budget compromise type signing.

    Would be a waste of a squad space - we have too many players as it is, and that’s before we sign the CM and RW that Jones wants to bring in.

    Need Asiimwe and Kanu to go, and without double checking the exact numbers, one or two more after that.

    Any further signings need to be pretty much guaranteed starters, not players who are worth a punt.

    I agree that Alex Gilbert would be exactly the above but I think that's the market we are shopping in now (following the ownership looking for extra finance news)

    Likely to be a very good signing for Orient. Since we played them in the play off final and after last seasons poor showing they have had a huge turnover in players. However, they seem to be building a formidable squad again The young kid on loan from Spurs, Akhamrich looks particularly good.

    You do realise that I suggested Gilbert for CAFC one month ago when we hadnt signed hardly anybody and appeared to have no money to spend i.e. the owners of CAFC were appealing for funding? and they say a week is a long time in Politics, well in Football a month is a life time!
