Le Foot Français (incl. new professional Ligue 3 player watch)
With my hometown team’s promotion coinciding with the new professionalisation and rebranding and TV rights of the third tier of French football, I thought I’d attempt this new thread to see if the interest’s there.
I went to the first match of the season yesterday evening to see an entertaining match. The first thing that was confirmed for me was the sudden increase in attendance, indeed I managed to persuade a neighbour / friend to go with me for the first time. There was even a new band of ultras waving Napoleon flags (who founded the town) which amused me.
Versailles took the lead after about 30 seconds but Vendée FC La Roche got their act together after an initial 30 minutes of nervousness, during which they could have conceded at least one more, and finished by winning 3-2 despite playing the last 15 minutes + 8 additional minutes with ten men.
Part of the reason for the 8 minutes was 3 VAR stops during the game - yes, VAR in the third tier! Despite this, the game flowed better than we now sadly see in the EFL: there were only about 3 shirt pulls, all of which led to a free kick. There were no goalkeeper head injuries, only one piece of play acting, and no moaning to the ref. Refereeing is much stricter in France hence the red card (with VAR check) to everyone’s bemusement. I can only assume it was something off the ball or something that was not visable from our angle.
All 3 VFCLR’s goals were scored by a new signing from the Danish first division: Mansour Samb. Brilliant hat-trick from him and if he continues like that then he should be on Charlton’s radar. Kamil Bensoula was also impressive in centre midfield but for NJ he takes too many risks, sometimes resulting in defensive troubles, other times however leading to a dangerous burst into attack.

Interesting to read about a team of Charlton’s levelish elsewhere. Reread and realise it is 3rd rather than 2nd tier but still interesting1

Didn't realise how many French clubs have dropped to Ligue 3 that I'm sure have been in Ligue 1 in the last 10 years, including Caen, Amiens and Bastia3

Yeah, that makes the prospect of watching VFCLR this season all the more exciting. It will be interesting to see how many fans those clubs bring.
