I reckon Holsgrove is wishful thinking at this point. Bringing in three central midfielders when we already have so many just seems unlikely. I like the look of him so hoping to be proved wrong!

I suppose this isn’t the time for me to pass on a review from my Polish forklift driver who is a Lech Poznan fan then. Like with any player I will reserve judgment until they play for us (Kermorgant, Coady etc.) but it is far from glowing.

I agree but would have to put Charlie Wright first. Only old timers probably know who I mean or Sam Bartram possibly but depends how they would get on in the modern game

A lot of people binning off JRC over Docherty but not for me, he had that little spell where Jones decided to trust him a bit last season and we saw some decent performances from him, Pompey - Cov at home in particular where he put in a MOM level display.  If no other midfielder comes in other than the Kenyan midfield machine then that bit of class falls to JRC again. Can also fill in at RWB where he played plenty at this level before.

Is there doubts over his fitness and intensity? maybe, but he barely played last season and so far in the PSF we've mixed up the teams so much for "minutes in the legs" its hard to say how "fit" he is still.

It’s goalkeeper talk but Anthony Patterson is off to Wrexham from Sunderland for 8 million which is bonkers money for a bloke who had a good half season when Sunderland went up
He was pretty solid for Millwall last season
Even let one in under his body in the play off semi final to see Hull knock them out, cracking bloke but 8M is still a lot

Always remember big Bobs interview after an FA cup game in which I think we lost and he got The mom. Live on tv he came out with that classic line of ‘win or lose on the booze’!!!! Met him a few years back, he is a real gentleman with hands like shovels!
I always a remember this helpful shout from the crowd after Bolder had put a succession of goal kicks straight into touch:
”AIM FOR THE GREEN STUFF, BOB.”

Id rather play Doris the tea lady at RB in a back four than JRC, likely more mobile than Joe

Best goalkeeping performance was Sasa at St Andrews on the last day of that season
It's not even the best goalkeeping performance from a Charlton keeper at St Andrews.

Completely agree, I don’t understand why people have written him off when at times he was the only midfielder who could pass. I’d definitely bin off doc if there was a central midfielder to get rid of.

Fair enough - Charlie Wright was before my time - Jeff Wood and Nicky Johns I think when I started going

I can't see Apter leaving, the whole point about bringing in a RW is because we're light on that side, we would just be back where we started if we replaced him with a loanee

TC cashed in on is my guess, or we send someone else out on loan/sold that's more surprising, like Leaburn or Burke

I think if Tutt hadn't picked up a career ending injury he had the potential to be a great keeper

Maybe you would but NJ very clearly will not. Club captain, seems a popular guy around the ground, has the high energy and running that NJ favours... Doc is going nowhere IMO.

He seems a decent all round utility man but if we’re looking to free up squad space he’d be top of my, and I think, most others list to be offloaded - even if he shaved his hair off, had some tattoo’s and started wearing boots like ballerina slippers I still think he’d look like a reserve footballer unfortunately - the sort who always get a game somehow when we play millwall

You hate to say it but a Right Wing on loan makes JRS a possibility 😂
Heard a Sheffield Utd fan call him Jes No-Track-Backyi yesterday which made me chuckle

It’s his lack of pace and mobility. Really he should have been great competition for Coventry as he can pick a pass but when we needed that cover we got Coady in on loan instead. He was a good target but it just hasn’t worked out

Think if there was a way to also bring in Holsgrove it would probably be Docherty who leaves instead of JRC.

Docherty is likely to have more interest so easier to move on and is also entering the final year of his contract too so also the chance of getting a fee for him. I also think Jones would want to show him a bit more respect and let him leave rather than be 5th choice CM. One of the ruthless departures you could say, similar to Gillesphey’s departure.

This is all dependent of course of bringing in Ouma and also Holsgrove if we truly do want to rebuild the midfield.

I think the club would rather have TC than Apter though, so if they can convince TC to sign a new deal then Apter might have to go out on loan purely for squad size. Alli has played on the right at previous clubs and looked bright there on Saturday

Burke I think Jones will want to keep around and any deal would see us paying the majority of his wages, and that’s if we could find him a taker which is unlikely imo

Leaburn would only leave if we had another striker coming in, so we’d still need to lose someone else to bring in the new winger

I think TC being sold is the most likely outcome, but from what Jones is saying we are obviously trying to convince him to stay. So if that works we will need to find someone else to leave which is where Apter would probably be the obvious answer

If ever there was a choice to be made over the two then (imo) it comes down to stick or twist with changing the way we play.

Cov, Chalobah, Doch, Muwamba, Ouma* are all "defensive" minded midfielders, even the two AM boys Carey and Knibbs are more hustle and bustle types - that leaves Costello as the only progressive, footballing midfielder that can get up the pitch (chalobah can pass it about too but not gonna get forward much) he showed he had a bit about him already, even if we end up with Holsgrove - who would be his backup?

Just confirming that two separate ITK contenders have talked about our man Ouma, yeah? If so... get ready for some jambos everyone, and let's get our ugali on the stove

I don’t think Jones is ever going to trust Costello to play a significant role in one of his teams. He just doesn’t have the physical attributes required, so I think he will be the one to leave

Then you have Chalobah and Ouma first choice, with Coventry back up to Chalobah and Docherty back up to Ouma. Though we also saw that Coventry and Chalobah can maybe work well as a pairing too

The only 2 attributes needed for a modern day midfielder - particularly the way NJ likes to play - sounds perfect 👍

As I'm a member of Admin now, can we stop with the past Charlton goalkeeper comparisons.

It's got no place on this thread and anyone caught shoe horning a GK display they saw against Port Vale in 1927 will be banned.

    Thanks.
