I wouldn’t be surprised if we loaned out Brooks and used an underage academy player as our 3rd choice keeper, seems a waste of an overage squad slot on a 3rd keeper.22

How quickly a couple of signings change the mood or least briefly quieten the doubters.
Jones said seven signings and we've signed seven with one more on the cards, maybe two if the Kaminski rumours have any substance.
Under promise, over deliver is always a good policy or "keep your powder dry" as some might say.
We've strenghtened in most areas and have more depth.
Nearly all the ingrediants of the dessert have been assembled and the Jones the Baker can now cook them as he pleases but as ever the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. To be, or not to be, that is the question:Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to sufferThe slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,Or to take arms against a sea of troublesAnd by opposing end them...0 -
If somehow TK and Mannion got injured at the same time we can utilise the emergency loan marketCovered_End_Lad said:I wouldn’t be surprised if we loaned out Brooks and used an underage academy player as our 3rd choice keeper, seems a waste of an overage squad slot on a 3rd keeper.4 -
I should say we’ve been looking at tens if not hundreds of players for months/years, that’s what Chapple and his team are paid to do full time.Sword65pf said:
To be fair they said they had been looking at him a long time, I’d say that indicates months.Covered End said:

I know frees & loans attract up front payments, and some players such as Grant & Chalobah will be on higher wages than our average players, but our transfer outlay falls short of what most on here would have thought we would have spent by the season opener.
And no-one will convince me that we've been chasing Ouma for months. Per-leeease.
But if Holsgrove is not gonna happening you move on to your next best option if you’ve half a brain or would you have preferred us to sign Foo Kin Noone.
Jeez I’m signing out for the night as the stupidity levels are too much at times.
Looking at players and actively contacting them to sign is 2 entirely different matters.
It’s a poor show if we’re only looking at a low number.2 -
Can't be Leaburn and Kanu. That will leave us with a 35 year old Matt Godden, an injured Charlie Kelman and a 19 year old Micah Mbick returning from a knee injury. ATM we have Godden and Grant (who I think will feature down the middle quite a bit, particularly if TC stays ) - in say 4 weeks we will also have mbick and Kelman competing for that 1 spot - I’m not sure how Leaburn gets a game once all are fitNabySarr said:

Technically we could use Grant as an outrightbstriker but then we're back to not having many wide options so it would be a last resort.Garrymanilow said:

I can only see Leaburn going if it somehow means we can then get an oven ready proven striker with genuine Championship bona fides - which seems very very unlikely and doesn't do anything to solve the numbers problem anyway.0 -

I don’t think he goes anywhere or is meant to be a gem. He’s there so that we have three keepers who have played senior football. In an ideal world he improves enough to become the second choice keeper when Mannion wants to move on for regular footballfelix_31 said:

Interesting stats about Cov/Doc/JRC and distances covered. I think one of Coventry’s biggest assets, which often goes unnoticed, is because he doesn’t have great pace his game is about reading the game better and being in the right place. The reason we noticed Dobbo was because of a last minute tackle that smashed a guy in the air but it’s most likely because he was poorly positioned in the first place. Coventry isn’t that type of player - he’s less spectacular but just as important.I’ve never seen anything of JrC and thought he was great or even good. Always meh. Too slow, poor on the ball, gets dragged out of position. I’d have no qualms in him departing12
-
From above it seems obvious that one yhe four to leave will be a keeper and only Kaminsky has a likely sell-on.0
-
Echo the other thoughts where I wouldn't really care if JRC leaves, just doesn't look physically anywhere near it and doesn't have the technical ability or footballing intelligence to make up for that imo2
-
Did he? I think it was more that were top heavy and that for us to be able to sign a new striker someone would need to leave.RonnieMoore said:Jones said when we lose a striker another will come in1 -
When you only get 25 squad places 3 goalkeepers seems excessive to me. Can you not name 2 and then in an emergency bring the 3rd in? Don't actually know how it works.1

Dobson is the kind of player who would launch a cruncher of a tackle to knick the ball off someone about to break through. Coventry is the kind who would intercept the pass through so the player never makes that run in the first place.Swisdom said:Interesting stats about Cov/Doc/JRC and distances covered. I'm not saying this to say one is better or worse than the other and they both bring other things as well of course.2 -
The thing is though you're taking from one area of need to populate another. Grant isn't a good centre forward in our set-up unless we're playing with 2 up front, in which case we're even more short. The striker in our set up needs to be able to challenge for the high ball as well as popping up in the box, Grant isn't the man for that job and it won't get the best out of him. Mbick is absolutely untested at this level both physically and in terms of ability. He spent last season looking decent in L2 but we can't be reliant on him as our third choice striker at this stage in the season, especially as he had a bad injury. He's fine at a 4th striker who we test out but he can't be counted as a serious option at this stage. So really if we get rid of Leaburn it's just Godden and Kelman and one injury later - Godden missed most of last season and Kelman is on his second injury with us already - we're totally unable to change a game.DOUCHER said:

It's a risk. Emergency loans are only for when all your professional keepers are injured, so you can't bring someone in on an emergency loan just to sit on the bench. That means if your number 1 is injured and you're playing your backup, if he gets injured or sent off you're reliant on an academy keeper to come in for that game which can be pretty disastrous. The alternative is to go into the free transfer market. You can usually get away with that a bit in L1 with a backup but there's not a lot of Championship level keepers floating around mid-season most of the time. Both Kaminski and Mannion were injured at points last season and Mannion got an injury the season before that so they've both got form for having absences. It's definitely safer to have a third keeper in the squadPelling1993 said:When you only get 25 squad places 3 goalkeepers seems excessive to me. There’s also no guarantee an emergency loan keeper is any good. Better the devil you know etc2

I agree to an extent but if we are relying on Leaburn to win aerial duals, then we are in trouble - I think our striker needs to be able to hold the ball up but into feet this year - we hardly ever played into a strikers feet last year - Kelman did well up top on his own in that game against Hull last year and I think that’s the type of lone striker we are playing this year - Godden, Grant and Kelman can all do that and I’m assuming mbick will be the preferred alternative optionGarrymanilow said:

If he had to come on in an emergency, it wouldn't be much different from an U21 keeper coming on.
And after that game, we could seek out an emergency loan. It would be incredibly unlikely to have both senior keepers out with major injuries anyway.0 -

It’s painful watching him play. His skill set is lacking and ability.5 -
Oh yes , the people that sit there and shout “jummmppp!” For 90 minutes , as if that’s the most important thing . Leaburn’s best season by far was with JRS and CBT on the wings in a 433. Admittedly I don’t think he’s as good as he was then and it’s a higher level, but he might do better with a slightly more cultured midfield and threats from both sides .fenaddick said:

I hope Miles makes people eat their words this season. I've read people lately saying he's not even a professional footballer. (!!) Wow. Can't even bring myself to address that take, so hopefully Leaburn does it for me.
