If they take away the bump on away tickets then really what is the point of it? I dont have VG by the way, but that was the main incentive and i think deservedly so. Bit of a kick in the teeth to people who have supported the scheme over the years. Will the proposed membership fee go towards the academy? Also, would you have to get the membership on top of your season ticket to get priority on aways? Current system works fine until you get a big game and people start complaining. If it ain't broke...

I’ve never understood why you have to buy a child’s membership on top of a season ticket, surely you are automatically a member by buying a ST. Money making scheme and that’s what the new membership schemes will be.

Do you? My understanding is that a child's season ticket and Junior Addicks membership were two completely different things and one is not conditional on the other. When did it change?

On your last point, the club already has a membership scheme that makes money for the club, albeit whilst also being independent of the club. It's called Valley Gold and costs £120 a year. One may question whether another/different membership scheme is needed, but money making membership schemes are nothing new at Charlton.

I wonder if it's finally dawned on them that the ticketing system isn't capable of running something so complicated.

Sounds like the moaners have won and that they’ll ditch VG priority on tickets next year.

    And there's the rub.

I already have two memberships ie Valley Gold and a Season Ticket.

It will be very difficult to create a third membership schene with attractive benefits that are not already offered by the two existing schemes.

We rarely sell out home games so access to home tickets for non-season ticket holders isn't much of an incentive.

Away ticket priority comes with ST and VG.

    Shop discount from VG.

Discount on shirt sponsorship already with ST.

    Prize draws = VG

So the alternative has to be to gut Valley Gold and remove ST benefits in the hope people switch to the new in-house membership scheme.

VG dies but the club gets full control.

Whether it gets more income will remain to be seen.

If they stop away ticket priority they will see a huge drop off in VG membership. I don't use any of the other so called benefits and I suspect this applies to a lot of people.

Sounds like they announced originally without a clear plan agreed, and now didn’t get there arse in gear on time following that.

Another example of the lack of CEO impact?

You should know with Charlton unless it’s all signed off and on the clubs website as live, never take anything for granted

For obvious reasons I need to be circumspect, but this is the rub.

Speaking generally, there are key differences between a club run membership scheme and an independent one. Any change will need to take all such impacts into consideration, along with creating a business case that shows greater revenues than an independent scheme.

An alternative case might be that a reconstituted independent scheme delivers similar revenues without ownership of the costs and risk, albeit with less direct control. Or indeed complementary schemes might deliver best value.

A sensible approach would be to conduct an in-depth consultation to explore all options to determine the best option, taking into account loyalty to any incumbent scheme and the drivers behind membership.

In our specific circumstance, the club has committed to a proper consultation, which would seem sensible.

Actually, despite the recent uncertainty, VG membership continues to thrive - we're not far off 3000 members now. These members make a 6 figure contribution directly to the academy every year, and this year looks like being a record year (save for the large contribution given towards the last Cat1 project).
  • I am a VG member but when I go into my online account there is no notification of my membership , just loyalty points and personal details . Is that correct ?......I have yet to use it for access to priority tickets.

That’s correct, best thing to do is to email the ticket office and ask if your VG is linked to your  fan ID No.
  • I have done but have had no response, will try again, cheers.

Wouldn't suprise me in the least if you phoned up, got to speak to the right person, explained why you cancelled, you may be reinstated. Obviously, that's if you'd be prepared to stump up on the spot. The club people - not the website - are usually good at handling these subjective matters appropriately. Forget emails, needs a chat.

Best to email Carlie.Thompson@cafc.co.uk who is the VG co-ordinator - include a phone number and ask her to call you back.
