Although mainly a right footed player he must have been doing lots of practice with his left.
The shot last week that hit the woodwork plus his goal yesterday were both good left footed shots.
This can only help him develop further.

If TC was consistent he wouldn’t be at Charlton.
He'd be at a big club like Preston

I am certainly biased because he is one of our own.
Opposition teams frequently double up on him, and when they bother to comment on one of our individual players opposition fans consistently praise him (even fear him).
I don’t think I have ever read an ‘external’ comment that Tyreece Campbell is rubbish, yet have read and heard plenty of negativity from our fans.
What do they see that some of ours don’t see?
Derby fans over the weekend were bemoaning their lack of wingers, I bet they would welcome TC in the blink of an eye.
I hope he signs an improved contract and stays.

The thing is, he does need to improve on his decision making in the final third but he is young and seems to be doing that. He has pace and ghosts past defenders for fun. Opposing fans fear him. That says it all.

Every player can improve and he undoubtedly is getting better and growing in confidence. I imagine he will be off at some stage but for now I'll just enjoy watching him play.

It's what they don't see that we do see.

They see him for 90 mins, taking on their full backs and more often than not putting in a poor ball into the box or making the wrong decision. They leave the ground saying "That Campbell looked dangerous" then they don't see him again.

We watch him every week struggle with his decision making and final ball.

I don't think many Charlton fans question Campbell's ability to be dangerous, the frustrations are purely around his end product.

His end product is improving as most fans have noticed as is his decision making. If his end product was better he wouldn't be at Charlton.

If his end product was perfect or close to perfect he would be playing in the Premier League. His challenge is to improve to that level which is entirely possible for him. I hope he signs a contract, I think his focus should be about getting to that level without distractions and there is always an element of risk with a move. He might get a move to a club taking a punt where he needs to go to somewhere where they really want him and he is starting every game. If he signs a contract and plays to a level where the big boys are interested, he will get a move as we can't hold players back.

Even Ronaldo in his winger days didn’t always get in the perfect cross or score a goal every time he was on the ball. Yet some of ours not only expect that of TC but curse and shout any time he doesn’t do it.

I do agree with the point that we see TC every week so are more acutely aware of his 'weaknesses', but I also think there are some pretty unrealistic expectations. Speaking of which, go and look at the Alli thread to see people already criticising him for failing to defend Corey Blackett Taylor 1v1; people's expectations are ridiculous and out of alignment.

Did people watch the World Cup? The English wingers each had slightly different profiles, and all have things they bring to the table and things they take off it.

Saka is the elite winger out of the bunch, and he struggled for numbers last season as teams focus defensive efforts on him and the burden of his defensive work and usage rate impacted his fitness. He is an attacking menace who can follow tactical instructions and go either way with great effect. The gold standard in England at the moment. Noni Madueke cost Arsenal 50 million and was widely criticised for failing to be direct; he was allowed the space to attack down the line because he can't cross with his right foot. Anthony Gordon grew into the tournament but is a functional, pressing winger rather than someone who glides past defenders and creates chances with creativity. Rashford clearly has elite level talent but has worse body language and effort than TC, doesn't bother with defending and has had huge variations in his goal contributions. None of these players are perfect. Their end product and consistency varies. This is the nature of the beast when it comes to wingers.

TC is a 22 year old winger playing his second season in the Championship. For the first time in about three years he is playing in his favoured position in a version of the most common and natural formation to kids brought through modern academies. He is electric (looked quicker yesterday than he did towards end of last year, clearly the rest has helped). He is learning how to use his body more effectively year on year. He isn't perfect with his left foot but he showed defenders early that he was willing to go that way to scare them. We know all about his defensive efforts. There is so much to like about his game, but it just seems people don't want to see it at this point.

It'll be good to see TC actually get to be a winger this season and hopefully with it get the expectations of a winger applied to him. Wingers are always inconsistent across and within games. Their job typically is to try something that has a lower success rate than most other players would take on and with it you either unlock a defence or lose the ball. A lot of the problem TC has had with the less patient fans is that he's been playing as a sort of striker and he's been our only creative outlet; that means every time he's got the ball he's been expected to successfully create something or score and that is absolutely ridiculous. His goal and assist rate is scrutinised because he's ostensibly a striker but his main role had been to get us up the pitch and create chances through chaos as our players arrive in his wake rather than through structured moves, and he's been constantly doubled up on. The way we're playing now with two proper wingers and full backs threatening to push up as well he's not the only one expected to create, he can't be picked on as much because there's a threat on the other side for defences to worry about and he can be allowed to try stuff and have it not come off. It's always been ridiculous the amount of grief he's got for not getting us a goal every time he gets the ball when no-one else has been stepping up to share the burden of creating as much as they should have. I hope as a result he'll get a lot less abuse from the stands but it might be that it's already too ingrained in some people's heads for it to change

I think last year in particular TC suffered from the fact we weren't creating much at all and he was the only one creating something.

If he got an opportunity to create something and it didnt come off instead of the reaction being a "oooff next time" or "right idea but didnt quite come off" the reaction is naturally "that was the chance" because chances are we arent making many or any more.

Hopefully this year we are able to go at teams a bit more consisently and so those ones that dont come off (as is inevitable in football) are seen more as part of sustained periods of pressure rather than as our only chance to score.

He was superb once he switched to the left but on the right he was dreadful.
He looked completely disinterested, his touch and decision making were equally bad.
Hopefully, NJ will just play him on the left, where he looked like a world-beater. Other players will have to play elsewhere to accommodate that.
TC also seems to play better when Miles is on the pitch.

We all know his strengths and weaknesses - this thread is now into 46 pages talking about them. We also know that opponents are going to start doubling up on him because they are scared of his pace on the ball. What's important now is how NJ gets the rest of the team to take advantage of the chaos he creates. If he frees up space for Grant or Chalobah to operate in, then the team is going to benefit. The new system suits him. He's getting the ball early allowing him to run at defenders. The goal on Saturday will boost his confidence. Sit back and enjoy.

He's been doubled up on for years. As you say, the difference now is that leaves other dangerous players open. I think that attacking spark is worth being a bit more open at the back

If you read other club’s forums about us TC is always the one that stands out and the one they said they’d nick off us “when we go down”. Derby did their very best to have two players on him at all times, and he still punished them. The physicality he’s developing and strength is something that is going to transform him into being a premier league player.

Loved seeing him show a bit of aggression with one of their players. I'd like to see more of that.

Yeah, that was their Norwegian international World Cup player.
It was also good to see Big Billy take no nonsense from Carlton Morris.

Two handed chest push, Tyreece was having it all game. As shy as he is, you rarely see him get bullied by a big slab head, always seems to hold his own.

I actually wanted TC to be sold this season, not because I don't rate him, but because I never thought he would get to play as an outright left winger and would be better off somewhere where he will be utilised there.

Now I have seen him play there against a very decent Championship side, I would be gutted if he left. We need him.

Hopefully he's going to benefit even more from us having better players than him.

What I mean by that, is that if we sign a right winger that then needs doubling up on, it'll give TC more space to work in, unless teams decide to double up on both of them, but that would be foolhardy as they'll then be exposed to our attacking midfielder and striker having more space
  • A few people have said this above and i agree, if he was perfect at things 99% of the time he wouldnt be here, he'd be at Real Madrid. Just like my namesake he isnt perfect but when it comes off it comes off, which is why he's so exciting to watch (please note Morts v Bradford, Morts v Man City, Morts v Norwich, Morts v Chelsea...oooh dreamy).. With wingers it will always be up and down, just enjoy it when you can.
  • And no I can add, TC v Derby, ooooh dreamy goal!

This can only help him develop further.
In stark stark contrast to his attempted crosses with his left foot
For something he has been doing for so long his crossing from the left is dismal
My bafflement at the fashion for inverted wingers remains total, unless the team is blessed with genuinely '2-footed' players.

For my tuppenyworth any professional footballer, most especially in the top two divisions, who fails to develop a decent 'weaker foot' is guilty of shameful abrogation of responsibility.

TC might be able to shoot OK sometimes with his left but his crossing and passing with it is pitiful.
Derby's right back showed him down the outside every time on Saturday cos he knew it offered no jeopardy.

His performance on Saturday was as quixotic as ever: pace to burn, erratic decision making, defensive application, ropey crossing and a very good goal.  His stats thus far in 26/7 look tremendous, proving what useless noise all that statistic guff really is.

Didn't take long on Saturday for the Curbside TC hate mob to start baying its usual script of vindictive drivel.
Carey on the other hand got away scot free with an underpowered dawdle around avoiding space and running wherever possible.  What is that so distinguishes them in the eyes of so many?

Carey got quite a lot of grief from where we were sitting in the Curbs stand. Decision making more questionable than that of TC without the work ethic, defensive contribution or outlet from nothing.

Agree for 95% of his career, was more pointing out that with flair players you take the ups and downs i my view, they'll never be perfect.

Fact is if Campbell is the side first game of next season then 1 the management have learnt nothing from this season and 2 we have not taken the squad to the next level as NJ said it would be in quality…

stats speak for themselves 3 goals in 45 appearances.. compare that with say Knibbs 3 goals in 26 ….. plus only two assists one less then the player everyone says should not be in the team etc Doc

    facts are all there
    Yes, quite agree, Ronnie  :D
