    Very sad to hear this. He was the star player when I saw my first games at the Valley in 1964. As an eight year old, I was very excited when my parents allowed me to stay up and watch the highlights of him playing for England against Wales in the home internationals.

    He was my hero when he played for us and when I was with Charlton youth team he came into the medical room when I was being treated and asked me how I was and I was tonge tied and could not answer.

    I ( just ) remember him as a Wolves player on TV. Some of these games are still on the Big Match Revisited on ITV 3 . He was a very impressive midfield player from the highlights I have seen.

    My Charlton memory is as a manager in the 1980/81 promotion winning season. He took a relegated side with no new signings ( although Terry Naylor did join during the season) and took us to promotion.

     I often feel he should be mentioned more in the best ever manager debates. It is a real shame he didn't stay and did the Brighton job swap with Mullery.

    In recent years I have had the privilege of sitting next to him and his lovely wife at some games. He still got great enjoyment from the matches and I understand they also used to travel to Wolves where he was also treated as a club legend.

    Even an old boy like me is too young to have seen him play but I well remember that 80/81 season when he led us to promotion as manager.

    What a shame he never got the chance to build on that next season.

    I remember him just. 
    A hell of a player, really really good be in no doubt. Intelligent in the kind of way a modern footballer has to be.

    Saw you in my first season alongside Hinton and Tocknell in the half back line then Haydock the following season once Hinton went to Chelsea. Was sorry you went to Wolves but having played for England you were obviously too good for us at the time.

    Did a great job as manager getting us straight back up. The uselessness of Mullery underlined how good you were as manager.

    Missed him playing for us by a whisker.  Obviously a good player though in a career of over 500 games.

    Like others I was too young to remember him as a player but during that 1980-81 season I was a regular. We had a brilliant run half way that season along with a run to the FACup 5th round. Some brilliant football compared to a lot of dross the previous decade. RIP Mike

    Rest in peace Mike - was a star in the midfield of 63. That side with Haydock, Tocknell, Kinsey, Bailey, « Daisy » Edward’s, Kenning. Matthews, Firmani and Glover should have been promoted. Mike was a great Wing half built like a tank but with real mobility he offered genuine quality on the ball and led and drove the team forward brilliantly. It was such an entertaining side.

    Didnt see him play for Charlton but when he was The Manager of The Valley Club spent some time with him.

    Also when he came back to Watch the clubalways willing to stop and have a chat.

    RIP, 80/81 was my first real home and away season and he performed miracles getting us promoted, never mind the Cup run. True gentleman, always good for a chat in the Valley Club and The White Horse though was still a bit in awe of him. Was so lovely at a Centenary do when he signed my Home and Away book, told him I used to get his autograph every week by the players entrance. Simply said to me that's why this is such a special club, thank you. Condolences to his family, Mike very much a special part of our history and a special man.

    When I worked in the summers on the pitch he came down to train at the club after an injury he got playing in USA. Must have been around 1978. Nice guy who was willing to have a chat. RIP.
